Matthew - Chapter: 23

>
23:1Then spake Iesus to the people, and to his disciples,
23:2saying: The Scribes and the Pharises syt in Moses seate.
23:3All therfore whatsoeuer they byd you obserue, that obserue and do: but do not ye after theyr workes:
23:4for they saye, and do not. Yee, they bynde together heuy burthens and greuous to be borne, & laye them on mennes shoulders: but they them selues wyll not heaue at them with one of their fyngers.
23:5All theyr worckes do they for the intent, that they maye be sene of men. They set abroade their philateries, & make large the borders of their garmentes,
23:6& loue the vppermoste seates at feastes, & to sytt in the chefe place in councels,
23:7& gretynges in the markett, and to be called of men, Rabbi.
23:8But be not ye called Rabbi. For one is youre master, euen Chryst, and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call no man youre father vpon the erth, for one is your father which is in heauen
23:10Nether be ye called masters, for one is youre master, euen Chryst.
23:11He that is greatest amonge you, shalbe youre seruaunt.
23:12But whosoeuer exalteth him selfe? shalbe brought lowe. And he that humbleth him selfe, shalbe exalted.
23:13Wo vnto you Scribes & Pharises, ye ypocrites, for ye shutt vp the kyngdome of heauen before men ye nether go in your selues, nether suffre ye them that come, to enter in.
23:14Wo vnto you Scribes, & pharises, ye ypocrites: for ye deuoure wyddowes houses: and that vnder a pretence of longe prayer: therfore shall ye be the sorer punysshed.
23:15Wo be vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes: for ye compasse see and lande, to make one proselyte: & when he is become one, ye make hym two folde moare the chylde of hell, then ye youre selues are.
23:16Wo be vnto you ye blynde gydes, ffor ye saye: whosoeuer doth sweare by the temple: it is nothynge: but whosoeuer sweareth by the golde of the temple, he is gyltye.
23:17Ye fooles & blinde: For whether is greater: the gold, or the temple that sanctifyeth the gold?
23:18And whosoeuer sweareth by the aultre, it is nothinge, but whosoeuer sweareth by the gyft that is vpon it, he is giltye,
23:19ye foles & blynd for whether is greater? the gyft: or the altare that sanctifieth the gyft?
23:20Whoso therfore sweareth by the aultre, sweareth by it, and by all thinges that are there on.
23:21And whoso sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, & by hym that dwelleth therin.
23:22And he that sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the seate of God, and by hym that sytteth theron.
23:23Wo vnto you Scribes & Pharises, ye ypocrites: For ye tyth mynt, and anyse, & commyn, & haue leaft the wayghtier matters of the lawe: iudgement, mercy, & fayth. These ought ye to haue done, & not to leaue the other vndone.
23:24ye blynde gydes, which strayne out agnat, & swalowe a Camell.
23:25Wo vnto you Scrybes and pharises, ye ypocrites: for ye make cleane the vtter syde of the cuppe, & of the platter: but within they are full of brybery and excesse.
23:26Thou blynde Pharise, clense fyrst that whych is wt in the cup & platter, that the outesyde of them maye be cleane also.
23:27Wo vnto you Scrybes & pharises, ye ypocrites: for ye are lyke vnto painted sepulcres which in dede appeare beautifull outwarde but are wythin full of deed mens bones & of all fylthynes.
23:28Euen so ye also, outwardlye appere ryghteous vnto men: But wythin, ye are full of faynednesse and iniquyte.
23:29Wo vnto you Scribes and Pharises, ye ypocrites: ye buylde the tombes of the Prophetes, and garnysihe the sepulchres of the ryghteous,
23:30& saye: yf we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we wolde not haue bene parteners wyth them in the bloude of the Prophetes.
23:31And so ye be wytnesses vnto youre selues, that ye are the chyldren of them whych kylled the prophetes.
23:32Fulfyll ye lykewyse the measure of your fathers.
23:33Ye serpentes, ye generacion of vypers, how wyll ye scape the damnacyon of hell?
23:34Wherfore beholde I sende vnto you Prophetes & wyse men, & scrybes, and some of them ye shall kyll & crucifye: & some of them shal ye scourge in youre synagoges, & persecute them from cytie to cytie:
23:35that vpon you maye come all the ryghteous bloude whych hath bene shedd vpoon the erthe, from the bloude of ryghteous. Abel, vnto the bloude of Zachary sonne of Barachias, whom ye slewe betwene the temple & the altare.
23:36Uerely I saye vnto you: all these thynges shall come vpon this generacion.
23:37O Ierusalem, Ierusalem, thou that kyllest the prophetes, & stonest them which are sent vnto the: how often wolde. I haue gathered thy chyldren together, euen as the henne gathereth her chyckens vnder her wynges, & ye wolde not?
23:38Beholde youre house is left vnto you desolate.
23:39For I saye vnto you: ye shall not se me hence forth, tyll that ye saye blessed is he, that commeth in the name of the Lorde.

 

23:1Thanne Jhesus spac to the puple, and to hise disciplis,
23:2and seide, On the chayere of Moises, scribis and Farisees han sete.
23:3Therfor kepe ye, and do ye alle thingis, what euer thingis thei seien to you. But nyle ye do aftir her werkis; for thei seien, and don not.
23:4And thei bynden greuouse chargis, and that moun not be borun, and putten on schuldris of men; but with her fyngur thei wolen not moue hem.
23:5Therfor thei don alle her werkis `that thei be seen of men; for thei drawen abrood her filateries, and magnifien hemmes.
23:6And thei louen the first sittyng placis in soperis, and the first chaieris in synagogis;
23:7and salutaciouns in chepyng, and to be clepid of men maystir.
23:8But nyle ye be clepid maister; for oon is youre maystir, and alle ye ben britheren.
23:9And nyle ye clepe to you a fadir on erthe, for oon is your fadir, that is in heuenes.
23:10Nether be ye clepid maistris, for oon is youre maister, Crist.
23:11He that is grettest among you, schal be youre mynystre.
23:12For he that hieth himself, schal be mekid; and he that mekith hym silf, schal be enhaunsid.
23:13But wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that closen the kyngdom of heuenes bifore men; and ye entren not, nether suffren men entrynge to entre.
23:14Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that eten the housis of widowis, and preien bi longe preier; for this thing ye schulen take more doom.
23:15Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ypocritis, that goon aboute the see and the loond, to make o prosilite; and whanne he is maad, ye maken hym a sone of helle, double more than ye ben.
23:16Wo to you, blynde lederis, that seien, Who euer swerith bi the temple of God, it is `no thing; but he that swerith in the gold of the temple, is dettoure.
23:17Ye foolis and blynde, for what is grettere, the gold, or the temple that halewith the gold?
23:18And who euer swerith in the auter, it is no thing; but he that swerith in the yifte that is on the auter, owith.
23:19Blynde men, for what is more, the yifte, or the auter that halewith the yifte?
23:20Therfor he that swerith in the auter, swerith in it, and in alle thingis that ben ther on.
23:21And he that swerith in the temple, swerith in it, and in hym that dwellith in the temple.
23:22And he that swerith in heuene, swerith in the trone of God, and in hym that sittith ther on.
23:23Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ypocritis, that tithen mynte, anete, and cummyn, and han left tho thingis that ben of more charge of the lawe, doom, and merci, and feith. And it bihofte to do these thingis, and not to leeue tho.
23:24Blynde lederis, clensinge a gnatte, but swolewynge a camel.
23:25Woo to you, scribis and Farisees, ypocritis, that clensen the cuppe and the plater with outforth; but with ynne ye ben ful of raueyne and vnclennesse.
23:26Thou blynde Farisee, clense the cuppe and the plater with ynneforth, that that that is with outforth be maad clene.
23:27Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that ben lijk to sepulcris whitid, whiche with outforth semen faire to men; but with ynne thei ben fulle of boonus of deed men, and of al filthe.
23:28So ye with outforth semen iust to men; but with ynne ye ben ful of ypocrisy and wickidnesse.
23:29Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that bilden sepulcris of profetis, and maken faire the birielis of iust men,
23:30and seien, If we hadden be in the daies of oure fadris, we schulden not haue be her felowis in the blood of prophetis.
23:31And so ye ben in witnessyng to you silf, that ye ben the sones of hem that slowen the prophetis.
23:32And fulfille ye the mesure of youre fadris.
23:33Ye eddris, and eddris briddis, hou schulen ye fle fro the doom of helle?
23:34Therfor lo! Y sende to you profetis, and wise men, and scribis; and of hem ye schulen sle and crucifie, and of hem ye schulen scourge in youre sinagogis, and schulen pursue fro cite in to citee;
23:35that al the iust blood come on you, that was sched on the erthe, fro the blood of iust Abel to the blood of Zacarie, the sone of Barachie, whom ye slowen bitwixe the temple and the auter.
23:36Treuli Y seie to you, alle these thingis schulen come on this generacioun.
23:37Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that sleest prophetis, and stoonest hem that ben sent to thee, hou ofte wolde Y gadere togidere thi children, as an henne gaderith togidir her chikenes vndir hir wengis, and thou woldist not.
23:38Lo! youre hous schal be left to you desert.
23:39And Y seie to you, ye schulen not se me fro hennus forth, til ye seien, Blessid is he, that cometh in the name of the Lord.

23:3Therfore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and do, but after their workes shal ye not do,
23:4for they saye & do not. For they bynde heuy and intollerable burthens, and laye them vpon mens shulders: But they them selues wil not heaue at them with one of their fyngers.
23:5All their workes do they to be sene of men. They set abrode their Philateries, and make large borders vpon their garmentes,
23:6and loue to syt vppermost at the table, and to haue the chefe seates in the synagoges,
23:7and loue to be saluted in the market, and to be called of me Rabbi.
23:8But ye shal not suffre youre selues to be called Rabbi, for one is youre master, euen Christ, and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call no man father vpon earth, for one is youre father, which is in heaue.
23:10And ye shal not suffre youre selues to be called masters, for one is youre master, namely, Christ.
23:11He that is greatest amoge you, shalbe youre seruaunt.
23:12For who so exalteth himself, shal be brought lowe: and he that humbleth himself, shalbe exalted.
23:13Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, that shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: Ye come not in youre selues, nether suffre ye them to enter, that wolde be in.
23:14Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, that deuoure wyddowes houses, and that vnder the culoure of prayenge longe prayers, therfore shal ye receaue ye greater damnacion.
23:15Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, which compasse see and lode to make one Proselyte: and whan he is become one, ye make of him a childe of hell, two folde more then ye youre selues are.
23:16Wo vnto you blyndegydes, which saye: Who so euer sweareth by the temple, that is nothinge: but who so euer sweareth by the golde of the temple, he is giltie.
23:17Ye fooles and blynde, whether is greater? the golde, or the teple that sanctifieth the golde?
23:18And who so euer sweareth by the altare, that is nothinge: but who so euer sweareth by the offeringe that is vpo it, he is giltye.
23:19Ye fooles and blynde, whether is greater? the offeringe, or the altare that sanctifieth the offerynge?
23:20Therfore who so sweareth by the altare, sweareth by the same, and by all that is theron:
23:21and who so sweareth by the temple, sweareth by the same, and by him that dwelleth therin.
23:22And who so sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the seate of God, and by him that sytteth theron.
23:23Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, which tythe Mynt, Anyse and Commyn, and leaue the waightier matters of the lawe behynde: namely, iudgment, mercy, and fayth. These ought to haue bene done, and not to leaue the other behynde.
23:24O ye blynde gydes, which strayne out a gnat, but swalowe vp a Camell.
23:25Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye Ypocrytes, which make cleane the vttersyde of the cuppe and platter, but within are ye full of robbery and excesse.
23:26Thou blynde Pharise, clense first the in syde of the cuppe and platter, that the out syde maye be cleane also.
23:27Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye Ypocrites, which be like vnto paynted Sepulcres, that appeare beutyfull outwarde, but within they are full of deed mens bones and all fylthines.
23:28Euen so are ye also: Outwarde ye appeare righteous vnto men, but within ye are full of ypocrisye and iniquyte.
23:29Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrites, which buylde the tombes of the prophetes, and garnysh the sepulcres of the righteous,
23:30and saye: Yf we had bene in oure fathers tyme, we wolde not haue bene partakers with them in the bloude of the prophetes.
23:31Therfore ye be wytnesses vnto youre selues, that ye are the children of them, which slew the prophetes.
23:32Go to, fulfyll ye also the measure of youre fathers.
23:33O ye serpentes, O ye generacion of vypers, how wyl ye escape the damnacion of Hell?
23:34Therfore beholde, I sende vnto you prophetes and wysemen, and scrybes, and some of them shal ye kyll and crucifye, and some of them shal ye scourge in youre synagoges, and persecute them from cite to cite:
23:35that vpon you maye come all the righteous bloude which hath bene shed vpon ye earth, from the bloude of righteous Abel, vnto ye bloude of Zachary ye sonne of Barachias, whom ye slew betwene the temple and the altare.
23:36Verely I saye vnto you: All these thinges shal light vpo this generacion.
23:37O Ierusalem Ierusalem, thou that slayest the prophetes, and stonest them that are sent vnto the: How oft wolde I haue gathered thy children together, euen as the henne gathereth hir chekens vnder hir wynges, and ye wolde not?
23:38Beholde, youre habitacion shalbe left vnto you desolate.
23:39For I saye vnto you: Ye shal not se me hence forth, tyll ye saye: Blessed be he, that commeth in the name of the LORDE.
