Matthew - Chapter: 27

>
27:1When the morning was come, all the chiefe Priests and Elders of the people, tooke counsell against Iesus to put him to death.
27:2And when they had bound him, they led him away, and deliuered him to Pontius Pilate the gouernour.
27:3Then Iudas, which had betraied him, when he saw that hee was condemned, repented himselfe, and brought againe the thirtie pieces of siluer to the chiefe Priests and Elders,
27:4Saying, I haue sinned, in that I haue betraied the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to vs? see thou to that.
27:5And hee cast downe the pieces of siluer in the Temple, and departed, and went and hanged himselfe.
27:6And the chiefe Priests tooke the siluer pieces, and said, It is not lawfull for to put them into the treasurie, because it is the price of blood.
27:7And they tooke counsell, and bought with them the potters field, to burie strangers in.
27:8Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood vnto this day.
27:9(Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Ieremie the Prophet, saying, And they tooke the thirtie pieces of siluer, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value:
27:10And gaue them for the potters field, as the Lord appointed me.)
27:11And Iesus stood before the gouernour, and the gouernour asked him, saying; Art thou the King of the Iewes? And Iesus sayd vnto him, Thou sayest.
27:12And when hee was accused of the chiefe Priests and Elders, he answered nothing.
27:13Then saith Pilate vnto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witnesse against thee?
27:14And he answered him to neuer a word: insomuch that the Gouernour marueiled greatly.
27:15Now at that feast the Gouernor was woont to release vnto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
27:16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
27:17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said vnto them, Whom will ye that I release vnto you? Barabbas, or Iesus, which is called Christ?
27:18For hee knew that for enuie they had deliuered him.
27:19When he was set downe on the Iudgement seate, his wife sent vnto him, saying, Haue thou nothing to doe with that iust man: for I haue suffered many things this day in a dreame, because of him.
27:20But the chiefe Priestes and Elders perswaded the multitude that they should aske Barabbas, & destroy Iesus.
27:21The Gouernour answered, and said vnto them, Whether of the twaine will ye that I release vnto you? They said, Barabbas.
27:22Pilate said vnto them, What shall I doe then with Iesus, which is called Christ? They all sayde vnto him, Let him be crucified.
27:23And the Gouernour said, Why, what euil hath he done? But they cried out ye more, saying, Let him be crucified.
27:24When Pilate saw that he could preuaile nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, hee tooke water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this iust person: see yee to it.
27:25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on vs, and on our children.
27:26Then released hee Barabbas vnto them, and when he had scourged Iesus, he deliuered him to be crucified.
27:27Then the souldiers of the Gouernour tooke Iesus into the common hall, and gathered vnto him the whole band of souldiers.
27:28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
27:29And when they had platted a crowne of thornes, they put it vpon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Haile king of the Iewes.
27:30And they spit vpon him, and tooke the reed, and smote him on the head.
27:31And after that they had mocked him, they tooke the robe off from him, and put his owne raiment on him, and led him away to crucifie him.
27:32And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to beare his Crosse.
27:33And when they were come vnto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
27:34They gaue him vineger to drinke, mingled with gall: and when hee had tasted thereof, hee would not drinke.
27:35And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophet, They parted my garments among them, and vpon my vesture did they cast lots.
27:36And sitting downe, they watched him there:
27:37And set vp ouer his head, his accusation written, THIS IS IESVS THE KING OF THE IEWES.
27:38Then were there two theeues crucified with him: one on the right hand, and another on the left.
27:39And they that passed by, reuiled him, wagging their heads,
27:40And saying, Thou that destroyest the Temple, & buildest it in three dayes, saue thy selfe: If thou be the Sonne of God, come downe from the Crosse.
27:41Likewise also the chiefe Priests mocking him, with the Scribes and Elders, said,
27:42He saued others, himselfe he cannot saue: If he be the King of Israel, let him now come downe from the Crosse, and we will beleeue him.
27:43He trusted in God, let him deliuer him now if hee will haue him: for he said, I am the Sonne of God.
27:44The thieues also which were crucified with him, cast ye same in his teeth.
27:45Now from the sixth houre there was darkenesse ouer all the land vnto the ninth houre.
27:46And about the ninth houre, Iesus cried with a loud voyce, saying, Eli, Eli, Lamasabachthani, that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken mee?
27:47Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
27:48And straightway one of them ran, and tooke a spunge, and filled it with vineger, and put it on a reede, and gaue him to drinke.
27:49The rest said, Let bee, let vs see whether Elias will come to saue him.
27:50Iesus, when hee had cried againe with a loud voice, yeelded vp the ghost.
27:51And behold, the vaile of the Temple was rent in twaine, from the top to the bottome, and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.
27:52And the graues were opened, and many bodies of Saints which slept, arose,
27:53And came out of the graues after his resurrection, and went into the holy citie, and appeared vnto many.
27:54Now when the Centurion, and they that were with him, watching Iesus, saw the earthquake, & those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truely this was the Son of God.
27:55And many women were there (beholding afarre off) which followed Iesus from Galilee, ministring vnto him.
27:56Among which was Mary Magdalene, & Mary the mother of Iames and Ioses, and the mother of Zebedees children.
27:57When the Euen was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Ioseph, who also himselfe was Iesus disciple:
27:58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Iesus: then Pilate commanded the body to be deliuered.
27:59And when Ioseph had taken the body, hee wrapped it in a cleane linnen cloth,
27:60And laide it in his owne newe tombe, which he had hewen out in the rocke: and he rolled a great stone to the doore of the sepulchre, and departed.
27:61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting ouer against the sepulchre.
27:62Now the next day that followed the day of the preparation, the chiefe Priests and Pharisees came together vnto Pilate,
27:63Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiuer said, while he was yet aliue, After three daies I wil rise againe.
27:64Command therfore that the sepulchre be made sure, vntill the third day, lest his disciples come by night, & steale him away, and say vnto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last errour shalbe worse then the first.
27:65Pilate said vnto them, Yee haue a watch, goe your way, make it as sure as you can.
27:66So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

27:1Vpon the morow, all the hye prestes and elders of the people helde a councell agaynst Iesus, that they might put him to death,
27:2and bounde him, and led him forth, and delyuered him vnto Pontius Pilate the debyte.
27:3When Iudas which betrayed him, sawe this that he was condemned vnto death, it repented him, and brought agayne the thirtie syluer pens to the hye prestes and the elders,
27:4and sayde: I haue done euell, in that I haue betrayed innocet bloude. They sayde: What haue we to do with yt? Se thou therto.
27:5And he cast the syluer pens in the teple, and gat him awaye, and wente and hanged him self.
27:6So the hye prestes toke the syluer pens, and sayde: It is not laufull to put them in to the Gods chest, for it is bloudmoney.
27:7Neuertheles they helde a councell, and bought with the a potters felde, for to burye straugers in.
27:8Wherfore the same felde is called the bloudfelde vnto this daye.
27:9Then was that fulfylled, which was spoken by Ieremy the prophet sayenge: And they toke thirtie syluer pens, the pryce of him that was solde, whom they bought of the children of Israell:
27:10and these they gaue for a potters felde, as the LORDE commaunded me.
27:11As for Iesus, he stode before the debyte, and the debyte axed him, and sayde: Art thou the kynge of the Iewes? And Iesus sayde vnto him: Thou sayest it.
27:12And wha he was accused of the hye prestes and elders, he answered nothinge.
27:13Then sayde Pylate vnto him: Hearest thou not, how sore they accuse the?
27:14And he answered him not one worde: in so moch that the debyte marueled exceadingly.
27:15At that feast, the debyte was wote to delyuer a presoner fre vnto the people, whom they wolde.
27:16And at the same tyme he had a notable presoner called Barrabas.
27:17And whan they were gathered together, Pylate sayde vnto them: Whether wil ye, that I geue lowse vnto you? Barrabas, or Iesus which is called Christ?
27:18For he knewe well that they had delyuered him of enuye.
27:19And wha he sat vpo the iudgmet seate, his wife sent vnto him, sayenge: Haue thou nothinge to do with that righteous man, for I haue suffred many thinges this daye in a dreame because of him.
27:20But the hye prestes and the elders persuaded the people, that they shulde axe Barrabas, and destroye Iesus.
27:21Then answered the debyte, & sayde vnto the: Whether of these two wyl ye yt I geue lowse vnto you? They sayde: Barrabas:
27:22Pylate sayde vnto them: What shal I do then with Iesus, which is called Christ? They sayde all: let him be crucified.
27:23The debyte saide: What euell hath he done the? Neuertheles they cried yet more and sayde, let him be crucified.
27:24So whan Pilate sawe, that he coude not helpe, but that there was a greater vproure, he toke water, and wasshed his handes before the people, and sayde: I am vngiltie of ye bloude of this righteous man. Se ye therto.
27:25Then answered all the people, and sayde: His bloude come vpon vs, and vpon oure children.
27:26Then gaue he Barrabas lowse vnto the, but caused Iesus be scourged, and delyuered him to be crucified.
27:27Then the debites soudyers toke Iesus, in to the comon hall, and gathered the whole multitude ouer him,
27:28and stryped him out of his clothes, and put a purple robe vpo him,
27:29and plated a crowne of thorne, & set it vpon his heade, and a rede in his hade, and kneled before him, and mocked him, and sayde: hayle kynge of the Iewes.
27:30And spytted vpon him, and toke ye rede, & smote him vpon the heade.
27:31And wha they had mocked hi, they toke the robe of him ageyne, & put his owne clothes vpon him, and led him forth, yt they might crucifie hi.
27:32And as they were goinge out, they founde a man of Cyren called Symon: him they compelled to beare his crosse.
27:33And when they came vnto the place called Golgatha (that is to saye by interpretacio a place of deed mens sculles)
27:34they gaue him to drynke, veneger myxte wt gall. And whan he had tasted therof, he wolde not drynke.
27:35So whan they had crucified him, they parted his garmetes, and cast lottes therfore: that the thinge might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet: They haue parted my garmetes amonge the, & cast lottes vpon my vesture.
27:36And there they sat, and watched hi.
27:37And aboue ouer his heade, they put vp the cause of his death in wrytinge: namely: This is the kynge of the Iewes.
27:38Then were there two murthurers crucified with him, the one of the right hande, and the other on the left.
27:39They that wente by, reuyled him, and wagged their heades
27:40and sayde: Thou that breakest downe the teple of God, and buyldest it in thre dayes, helpe thyself. Yf thou be the sonne of God, come downe from the crosse.
27:41The hye prestes also in like maner with the scrybes & elders, laughed him to scorne, and sayde:
27:42he hath helped other, and can not helpe himself: Yf he be the kynge of Israel, let him come downe now from the crosse, and we wil beleue him
27:43He trusted in God, let him delyuer him now, yf he wil haue him. For he hath sayde: I am the sonne of God.
27:44The murtherers also that were crucified with him, cast the same in his tethe.
27:45And from ye sixte houre there was darcknes ouer the whole earth vnto the nyenth houre.
27:46And aboute the nyenth houre, Iesus cried with a loude voyce, and sayde: Eli, Eli, Lamma asabthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
27:47But some of the that stode there, when they herde yt sayde: He calleth Elias.
27:48And immediatly one of them ranne, and toke a spoge, and fylled it with veneger, and put it vpon a rede, and gaue him to dryncke.
27:49But ye other sayde: holde, let se whether Elias wyl come, and delyuer him.
27:50Iesus cried agayne with a loude voyce, and gaue vp the goost.
27:51And beholde, the vale of the temple was rente in two peces, from aboue tyll beneth, and the earth quaked, and the stones rent,
27:52and the graues opened, and many bodies of the sayntes that slepte, arose,
27:53and wete out of the graues after his resurreccion, and came in to the holy cite, and appeared vnto many.
27:54But the captayne and they that were with him, and kepte Iesus, when they sawe the earthquake and the thinges that were done, they were sore afrayed, and sayde: Verely this was Gods sonne.
27:55And there were many wemen there lokynge to afarre of, which had folowed Iesus from Galile, and had mynistred vnto him:
27:56amonge whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of Iames and Ioses, and the mother of the children of Zebede.
27:57At euen there came a rich man of Arimathia, called Ioseph, which was also a disciple of Iesus.
27:58He wete vnto Pylate, and axed the body of Iesus. Then commaunded Pylate that the body shulde be geue him.
27:59And Ioseph toke the body, and wrapped it in a cleane lynnen cloth,
27:60and layed it in his owne new sepulcre, which he had hewen out in a rocke, and rolled a greate stone to the dore of the sepulcre, and wente his waye.
27:61And there was Mary Magdalene and ye other Mary, syttinge ouer agaynst the sepulcre.
27:62The next daye that foloweth the daye of preparynge, the hye prestes and Pharises came together vnto Pylate,
27:63and saide: Syr, we haue called to remembraunce, that this disceauer sayde whyle he was yet alyue: After thre dayes I wyl ryse agayne.
27:64Comaunde therfore that the sepulcre be kepte vnto the thirde daye, lest peraduenture his disciples come, and steale him awaye, and saye vnto the people: He is rysen from the deed, and so shal the last errour be worse the the first.
27:65Pylate sayde vnto them: There haue ye watchme, go youre waye, and kepe it as ye can.
27:66They wete and kepte the sepulcre wt watchmen, and sealed the stone.

27:1But whanne the morowtid was comun, alle the princis of prestis, and the eldre men of the puple token counsel ayens Jhesu, that thei schulden take hym to the deeth.
27:2And thei ledden him boundun, and bitoken to Pilat of Pounce, iustice.
27:3Thanne Judas that bitraiede hym, say that he was dampned, he repentide, and brouyte ayen the thretti pans to the princis of prestis, and to the elder men of the puple,
27:4and seide, Y haue synned, bitraiynge riytful blood. And thei seiden, What to vs? bise thee.
27:5And whanne he hadde cast forth the siluer in the temple, he passide forth, and yede, and hongide hym silf with a snare.
27:6And the princis of prestis token the siluer, and seide, It is not leueful to putte it in to the treserie, for it is the prijs of blood.
27:7And whanne thei hadden take counsel, thei bouyten with it a feeld of a potter, in to biryyng of pilgrymys.
27:8Herfor thilke feeld is clepid Acheldemac, that is, a feeld of blood, in to this dai.
27:9Thanne that was fulfillid, that was seid bi the prophete Jeremye, seiynge, And thei han takun thretti pans, the prijs of a man preysid, whom thei preiseden of the children of Israel;
27:10and thei yauen hem in to a feeld of a potter, as the Lord hath ordenyd to me.
27:11And Jhesus stood bifor the domesman; and the iustice axide him, and seide, Art thou king of Jewis?
27:12Jhesus seith to hym, Thou seist. And whanne he was accusid of the princis of prestis, and of the eldere men of the puple, he answeride no thing.
27:13Thanne Pilat seith to him, Herist thou not, hou many witnessyngis thei seien ayens thee?
27:14And he answeride not `to hym ony word, so that the iustice wondride greetli.
27:15But for a solempne dai the iustice was wont to delyuere to the puple oon boundun, whom thei wolden.
27:16And he hadde tho a famous man boundun, that was seid Barrabas.
27:17Therfor Pilate seide to hem, whanne thei weren to gidere, Whom wolen ye, that Y delyuere to you? whether Barabas, or Jhesu, that is seid Crist?
27:18For he wiste, that bi enuye thei bitraieden hym.
27:19And while he sat for domesman, his wijf sente to hym, and seide, No thing to thee and to that iust man; for Y haue suffrid this dai many thingis for hym, bi a visioun.
27:20Forsothe the prince of prestis, and the eldere men counseiliden the puple, that thei schulden axe Barabas, but thei schulden distrye Jhesu.
27:21But the iustice answeride, and seide to hem, Whom of the tweyn wolen ye, that be delyuerit to you? And thei seiden, Barabas.
27:22Pilat seith to hem, What thanne schal Y do of Jhesu, that is seid Crist?
27:23Alle seien, `Be he crucified. The iustice seith to hem, What yuel hath he doon? And thei crieden more, and seiden, Be he crucified.
27:24And Pilat seynge that he profitide no thing, but that the more noyse was maad, took watir, and waischide hise hondis bifor the puple, and seide, Y am giltles of the blood of this riytful man; bise you.
27:25And al the puple answeride, and seide, His blood be on vs, and on oure children.
27:26Thanne he deliuerede to hem Barabas, but he took to hem Jhesu scourgid, to be crucified.
27:27Thanne knyytis of the iustice token Jhesu in the moot halle, and gadriden to hym al the cumpeny `of knyytis.
27:28And thei vnclothiden hym, and diden aboute hym a reed mantil;
27:29and thei foldiden a coroun of thornes, and putten on his heed, and a rehed in his riyt hoond; and thei kneliden bifore hym, and scornyden hym, and seiden, Heil, kyng of Jewis.
27:30And thei speten on hym, and tooken a rehed, and smoot his heed.
27:31And aftir that thei hadden scorned him, thei vnclothiden hym of the mantil, and thei clothiden hym with hise clothis, and ledden hym to `crucifien hym.
27:32And as thei yeden out, thei founden a man of Cirenen comynge fro the toun, Symont bi name; thei constreyneden hym to take his cross.
27:33And thei camen in to a place that is clepid Golgatha, that is, the place of Caluarie.
27:34And thei yauen hym to drynke wyne meynd with galle; and whanne he hadde tastid, he wolde not drynke.
27:35And aftir that thei hadden crucified hym, thei departiden his clothis, and kesten lotte, to fulfille that is seid bi the prophete, seiynge, Thei partiden to hem my clothis, and on my clooth thei kesten lott.
27:36And thei seten, and kepten him;
27:37and setten aboue his heed his cause writun, This is Jhesu of Nazareth, kyng of Jewis.
27:38Thanne twey theues weren crucified with hym, oon on the riythalf, and oon on the lefthalf.
27:39And men that passiden forth blasfemeden hym,
27:40mouynge her heedis, and seiynge, Vath to thee, that distriest the temple of God, and in the thridde dai bildist it ayen; saue thou thi silf; if thou art the sone of God, come doun of the cross.
27:41Also and princis of prestis scornynge, with scribis and elder men,
27:42seiden, He made othere men saaf, he may not make hym silf saaf; if he is kyng of Israel, come he now doun fro the crosse, and we bileuen to hym;
27:43he tristide in God; delyuer he hym now, if he wole; for he seide, That Y am Goddis sone.
27:44And the theues, that weren crucified with hym, vpbreididen hym of the same thing.
27:45But fro the sixte our derknessis weren maad on al the erthe, to the nynthe our.
27:46And aboute the nynthe our Jhesus criede with a greet vois, and seide, Heli, Heli, lamazabatany, that is, My God, my God, whi hast thou forsake me?
27:47And summen that stoden there, and herynge, seiden, This clepith Helye.
27:48And anoon oon of hem rennynge, took and fillide a spounge with vynegre, and puttide on a rehed, and yaf to hym to drynke.
27:49But othir seiden, Suffre thou; se we whether Helie come to deliuer hym.
27:50Forsothe Jhesus eftsoone criede with a greet voyce, and yaf vp the goost.
27:51And lo! the veil of the temple was to-rent in twey parties, fro the hiest to the lowest. And the erthe schoke, and stoonus weren cloue; and birielis weren openyd,
27:52and many bodies of seyntis that hadden slepte, rysen vp.
27:53And thei yeden out of her birielis, and aftir his resurreccioun thei camen in to the holi citee, and apperiden to many.
27:54And the centurien and thei that weren with hym kepinge Jhesu, whanne thei saien the erthe schakynge, and tho thingis that weren doon, thei dredden greetli,
27:55and seiden, Verili this was Goddis sone. And ther weren there many wymmen afer, that sueden Jhesu fro Galilee, and mynystriden to hym.
27:56Among whiche was Marie Magdalene, and Marie, the modir of James, and of Joseph, and the modir of Zebedees sones.
27:57But whanne the euenyng was come, ther cam a riche man of Armathi, Joseph bi name, and he was a disciple of Jhesu.
27:58He wente to Pilat, and axide the bodi of Jhesu.
27:59Thanne Pilat comaundide the bodie to be youun. And whanne the bodi was takun, Joseph lappide it in a clene sendel,
27:60and leide it in his newe biriel, that he hadde hewun in a stoon; and he walewide a greet stoon to the dore of the biriel, and wente awei.
27:61But Marie Maudelene and anothir Marie weren there, sittynge ayens the sepulcre.
27:62And on `the tother dai, that is aftir pask euen, the princis of prestis and the Farisees camen togidere to Pilat,
27:63and seiden, Sir, we han mynde, that thilke giloure seide yit lyuynge, Aftir thre daies Y schal rise ayen to lijf.
27:64Therfor comaunde thou, that the sepulcre be kept in to the thridde dai; lest hise disciplis comen, and stelen hym, and seie to the puple, He hath rise fro deeth; and the laste errour schal be worse than the formere.
27:65Pilat seide to hem, Ye han the kepyng; go ye, kepe ye as ye kunnen.
27:66And thei yeden forth, and kepten the sepulcre, markynge the stoon, with keperis.
