27:1	Witodlice þa hyt morgen wæs. þa worhten ealle þare sacerda ealdres ge-mot. & þas folkes ealdres on-gean þanne hælend þæt hyo hine to deaðe be-læwdon.
27:2	& hyo lædden hyne ge-bundenne & sealden hyne þam pontiscan pilaten þam demen.
27:3	Ða ge-seah iudas þe hyne be-leawde. þæt he for-demed wæs. þa ongan he reowsian Note: MS. reorsian. . & brohte þa þrittig scyllinga. to þare sacerde ealdren. & cwæð.
27:4	Ic synogede þa ic sealde þæt rihtwise blod. Ða cwæðen hyo. Hwæt cwæðst þu þæt to us;
27:5	& he awarp þa scyllingas in-on þæt tempel. & ferde. & mid grine hine selfne äheng.
27:6	Ða soðlice þare sacerde ealdras on-fengen þas seolfres & cwæðen. Nis hyt na alyfed þæt we asenden hyt on ure maðmcheste Note: MS. madm-. . for-þam þe hyt ys blodes wurð.
27:7	Hyo worhten þa ge-mot. & smægdon. hu hyo scolden þas hælendes wurð Note: MS. wurd. ateon. þa ge-bohten hyo ænne aker mid þam feo agyl-wyrhton . Note: Sic; see v. on to bebyrigenne ealðeodisce men.
27:8	for-þam ys se aker ge-haten acheldemach. þæt ys on ure þeode blodes aker. & swa he ys ge-haten oðð þisne dayg.
27:9	Ða wæs ge-felld þæt gecweðen ys. þurh ieremiam þanne witege þus cweðende. Ænd hyo on-fengen þrittig scyllinga þas ge-bohten wurð. þane þe wæs ær ge-wurðed fram israele bearnen.
27:10	& hyo sealdon þæt on ageltiwyrhton (sic) aker swa swa drihten me gesette.
27:11	Þa stod se hælend beforan þam demen. & se deme hyne axode þus cwæðende. Ert þu iudea kyning; Ða cwæð se hælend. þæt þu sægst.
27:12	& mid þy þe hyne wreidon þare sacerda ealdres. & þa hlafordes. nan þing he ne andswerede.
27:13	Ða cwæð pilatus to hym. ne ge-herst þu hu fela sagen hyo on-gean þe seggað.
27:14	& he ne andswerede mid nanen worde. swa þæt se deme wunðrede swyðelice.
27:15	Hyo hæfdon heom to ge-wunen to hyre simbel-dayge. þæt se deme scolde forgyfen þam folce ænne for-worhtne mann swylcne hyo hæbben wolden.
27:16	Hyo hafden þa soðlice ænne strangne þeof-man gehæftne þe wæs ge-haten barrabas.
27:17	Ða þæt folc ge-samnod wæs. þa cwæð pilatus. Hwaðer wille ge þæt ich eow agyfe þe barraban þe þanne hælend; þe ys crist ge-haten.
27:18	He wyste soðlice þæt hyo hyne for anden hym sealden.
27:19	He sæt þa pilatus on hys dom-settle. Ða sente hys wif to hym & cwæð. Ne beo þe nan þing ge-mæne on-gean þisen rithwisen. Soðlice fela ic hæbbe ge-þoled to-dayg þurh ge-sihðe; for hym.
27:20	Ða lærde þa sacerde ealdres & þa hlafordes þæt folc þæt hyo bædon barraban. & þanne hælend for-dydon.
27:21	Ða andswerede se deme & saigde heom. Hwæðer wille ge þæt ic for-geofe eow of þisan twam. Ða cwæðen hyo. Barraban.
27:22	Ða quoth pilatus to heom. Witodlice hwæt do ich be þam hælende þe is crist ge-nemned Note: MS. genemneð. . Ða cwæðen hyo ealle. syo he on rode ahangen.
27:23	Þa cwæð se dema to heom. Witodlice hwæt yfeles dyde þes; Hyo þa swiðere clypedon; þus cweðende. syo he ahangen.
27:24	Ða ge-seah pilatus þæt hyt naht ne fremede ac ge-wurðe mare ge-hlud. þa ge-nam he water & weosc hys hande be-foran þam folke. & cwæð. Un-scyldig ich eom fram þisen rihtwisan blode. ge ge-seoð.
27:25	Ða andswerede eall þæt folc ænd cwæð. Syo his blod ofer us. & ofer ure bearn.
27:26	Ða for-geaf he heom barrabann. Ænd þanne hælend he lëtt swingen. & sealde heom to ähonne.
27:27	Ða under-fengen þas deman cæmpen þanne hælend on þam domerne. & ge-gaderede ealne þanne þread to heom
27:28	& un-scyrden hine hys agene reafe. & scrydden hine mid selekene reade sicchele (sic).
27:29	& wunden kynehelm of þornen. & asetten ofer hys heafod. & reod on hys swiðran. & beigdon heore cneow beforan hym. and bysmeredon hine þus cweðende.
27:30	Hall weosse þu iudea kyning. & spætton on hine. ænd namen reod ænd beoton hys heafod.
27:31	ænd æfter þan þe hy hine þus bysemeredon. hyo unscridden hine þam sicchele. & scyrden hine mid hys agene reafe. ænd lædden hyne to ahonne.
27:32	Soðlice þa hyo ut-ferden. þa gemetton hyo ænne cyrenyssce man cumende heom to-genes þas namen wæs symon. Ðane hyo nædden þæt he bære hys rode.
27:33	Ða comen hyo on þa stowe. þe ys ge-nemned golgotha þt is heafed-pannan stowe;
27:34	& hyo sealden hym win drincen wið gallen gemenged. & þa he hys on-byrede þa nolde he hit drinken.
27:35	Soðlice æfter þam þe hyo hine on rode on-hengen. hyo to-dældon hys reaf. & wurpon hlot þær-ofer. þt wære ge-fylled þt ge-cweðen wæs þurh þonne witegen & þus cwæð. hyo to-dælden heom mine reaf. & ofer mine reaf hyo wurpen hlot.
27:36	& hyo beheolden hine sittende.
27:37	& hyo asetten ofer hys heafod hys gylt þus awritenne. Ðys is se hælend iudea kyng.
27:38	Ða wæren ahangen mid hym twegen scaðan. än on þa swiðren healfe. & oðer on þam winstran.
27:39	Witodlice þa weiferende hyne bysmereden. & cwæhton heore heafod.
27:40	& cwæðen. Wa þæt þes to-werpð godes temple & on þridden daige hyt eft ge-tymbred. ge-hæl nu þe sylfne. gyf þu syo godes sune ga niðer of þare rode.
27:41	Eac þare sacerde ealdres. hyme (sic) bysmeredon mid þam bokeran & mid þam ealdran. & cwæðen.
27:42	Oðre he ge-helde. & hyne sylfne ge-hælen ne mæg. Gyf he israele kyng sy. ga nu niðer of þare rode. & we ge-lefeð hym.
27:43	He ge-lyfd on god. alyse he hyne nü gyf he wille. Witodlice he saigde godes sunu ich em Note: MS. eom, alt. to em. .
27:44	Gelice þa scaðan þe mid hym ahengene wæren hine hospodon.
27:45	Witodlice fram þare sixten tyde wæren ge-worðon þeostre ofer ealle eorðen. oððe nygeðon tyde.
27:46	& embe þa nygeþen tid. clypede se hælend mycelre stefne. & þus cwæð. Hely. hely. lama zabathani. þt is on englisc. min god min god to hwi for-lete þu me.
27:47	Soðlice sume þe þær stoden & þis ge-herden cwæðen. Nu he clypað heliam.
27:48	Ða rædlice arn an heora. & genam ænne spongen. & fylde hyo mid echede. & ä-sette an reod þær-on. & sealde hym drinken.
27:49	Witodlice þa oðre cwæðen læt uten ge-seon hwæðer helias cume & wylle hyne alysan.
27:50	Ða clypede se hælend æft mychelere stefne. & asende his gast.
27:51	Ænd þær-rihte þas temples wah-riht warð to-stliton (sic) on twegen dæles. fram ufewearden oððe niþewearden. & syo eorðe befode. & stanes to-burston;
27:52	& byrigenne wurden ge-openede. & manega halga lichamen þe ær slepen arisan.
27:53	& þa hyo ut-eoden of þam byrigenne; æfter hys ariste; hyo comen on þa halgen cheastre. & ætteowoden hyo manegen.
27:54	Witodlice þas hundredes ealdor. & þa þe mid hym wæron healdende þanne hælend. þa hyo ge-seagen þare eorðe-befienge. & þa þing þe þær ge-wurðen. hyo ondrædden heom þærle. & cwæðon. Soð godes sune wæs þes.
27:55	Witodlice þær wæren manega wif feorran. þa þe fylgdon þam hælende. fram galilea. hym þegnende.
27:56	Be-tweox þam wæs syo magdalenisca Marie. & Maria Iacobes & iosepes moder & zebedeis sune moder.
27:57	Soðlice þa hyt æfen wæs com sum weli man of arimathia þas name wæs ioseph. se sylfe wæs þas hælendes leorning-cniht.
27:58	he geneahlacte to pilate. & bæd þas hælendes lichamen. Ða het pilatus agyfen hym þanne lichamen.
27:59	& Ioseph genam þanne lichaman. & be-wand hine mid clænre scetan.
27:60	& legde hine on hys nywe berienne. þe he äheow of stane. & he to-awelte mycele stan to hlyde þare byrigenne. & ferde syððan.
27:61	Ðær wæs soðlice syo magdalenissce Marie & syo oðer Marie sittende æt þam byrigenne.
27:62	Witodlice oðeran daige þe wæs gearcung-dæg. comen to-gædere þare sacerda ealdras & þa sunder-halgen to pilate.
27:63	& cwæðen. Hlaford we ge-munen þæt se swica sæigde þa he on lyfe wæs. þæt æfter þreom dagen ic arise.
27:64	hat nu healden þa byrigenne. oðð þanne þridden day. þy-læs hys leorning-cnihtes cumen & for-stylen hyne. & seggen þam folke þæt he arise of deaðe. Ðanne beoð þæt æfter ge-dwel wyrse þanne þæt ærre.
27:65	Ða cwæð pilatus. Ge hæbbeð heord-radene fared & healded swa swa ge witen.
27:66	Soðlice hyo ferdon. & ymb-tremedon þa byrigenne. & inseggledon þanne stann mid þam wearden.


27:1	When the morning was come, all the chiefe Priests, and the elders of the people tooke counsell against Iesus, to put him to death,
27:2	And led him away bounde, and deliuered him vnto Pontius Pilate the gouernour.
27:3	Then when Iudas which betraied him, sawe that hee was condemned, hee repented himselfe, and brought againe the thirtie pieces of siluer to the chiefe Priestes, and Elders,
27:4	Saying, I haue sinned, betraying the innocent bloud. But they sayde, What is that to vs? see thou to it.
27:5	And when hee had cast downe the siluer pieces in the Temple, hee departed, and went, and hanged himselfe.
27:6	And the chiefe Priestes tooke the siluer pieces, and sayde, It is not lawfull for vs to put them into the treasure, because it is the price of bloud.
27:7	And they tooke counsell, and bought with them a potters fielde, for the buriall of strangers.
27:8	Wherefore that field is called, The field of bloud, vntill this day.
27:9	(Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Ieremias the Prophet, saying, And they tooke thirtie siluer pieces, ye price of him that was valued, whom they of ye children of Israel valued.
27:10	And they gaue them for the potters fielde, as the Lord appointed me.)
27:11	And Iesus stood before ye gouernour, and the gouernour asked him, saying, Art thou that King of the Iewes? Iesus said vnto him, Thou sayest it.
27:12	And when he was accused of the chiefe Priestes, and Elders, he answered nothing.
27:13	Then saide Pilate vnto him, Hearest thou not howe many things they lay against thee?
27:14	But he answered him not to one worde, in so much that the gouernour marueiled greatly.
27:15	Nowe at the feast, the gouernour was wont to deliuer vnto the people a prisoner whom they would.
27:16	And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
27:17	When they were then gathered together, Pilate said vnto the, Whether will ye that I let loose vnto you Barabbas, or Iesus which is called Christ?
27:18	(For he knewe well, that for enuie they had deliuered him.
27:19	Also when he was set downe vpon the iudgement seate, his wife sent to him, saying, Haue thou nothing to do with that iust man: for I haue suffered many things this day in a dreame by reason of him.)
27:20	But the chiefe Priestes and the Elders had persuaded the people that they shoulde aske Barabbas, and should destroy Iesus.
27:21	Then the gouernour answered, and said vnto them, Whether of the twaine will ye that I let loose vnto you? And they said, Barabbas.
27:22	Pilate said vnto them, What shall I do then with Iesus, which is called Christ? They all said to him, Let him be crucified.
27:23	Then saide the gouernour, But what euill hath he done? Then they cryed the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
27:24	When Pilate saw that he auailed nothing, but that more tumult was made, he tooke water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this iust man: looke you to it.
27:25	Then answered all the people, and saide, His bloud be on vs, and on our children.
27:26	Thus let he Barabbas loose vnto them, and scourged Iesus, and deliuered him to be crucified.
27:27	Then the souldiers of the gouernour tooke Iesus into the common hall, and gathered about him the whole band,
27:28	And they stripped him, and put about him a skarlet robe,
27:29	And platted a crowne of thornes, and put it vpon his head, and a reede in his right hand, and bowed their knees before him, and mocked him, saying, God saue thee King of the Iewes,
27:30	And spitted vpon him, and tooke a reede, and smote him on the head.
27:31	Thus when they had mocked him, they tooke the robe from him, and put his owne rayment on him, and led him away to crucifie him.
27:32	And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon: him they compelled to beare his crosse.
27:33	And when they came vnto the place called Golgotha, (that is to say, the place of dead mens skulles)
27:34	They gaue him vineger to drinke, mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drinke.
27:35	And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, and did cast lottes, that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the Prophet, They deuided my garments among them, and vpon my vesture did cast lottes.
27:36	And they sate, and watched him there.
27:37	They set vp also ouer his head his cause written, THIS IS IESVS THE KING OF THE IEVVES.
27:38	And there were two theeues crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
27:39	And they that passed by, reuiled him, wagging their heades,
27:40	And saying, Thou that destroyest ye Temple, and buildest it in three dayes, saue thy selfe: if thou be ye Sonne of God, come downe from ye crosse.
27:41	Likewise also the hie Priests mocking him, with the Scribes, and Elders, and Pharises, said,
27:42	He saued others, but he cannot saue him selfe: if he be ye King of Israel, let him now come downe from ye crosse, and we will beleeue in him.
27:43	He trusted in God, let him deliuer him nowe, if he will haue him: for he saide, I am the Sonne of God.
27:44	The selfe same thing also ye theeues which were crucified with him, cast in his teeth.
27:45	Now from ye sixt houre was there darkenesse ouer all the land, vnto the ninth houre.
27:46	And about ye ninth houre Iesus cryed with a loud voyce, saying, Eli, Eli, lamasabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
27:47	And some of them that stoode there, when they heard it, said, This man calleth Elias.
27:48	And straightway one of them ran, and tooke a spondge, and filled it with vineger, and put it on a reede, and gaue him to drinke.
27:49	Other said, Let be: let vs see, if Elias wil come and saue him.
27:50	Then Iesus cryed againe with a loude voyce, and yeelded vp the ghost.
27:51	And behold, the vayle of the Temple was rent in twaine, from the top to the bottome, and the earth did quake, and the stones were cloue.
27:52	And the graues did open themselues, and many bodies of the Saintes, which slept, arose,
27:53	And came out of the graues after his resurrection, and went into the holy citie, and appeared vnto many.
27:54	When the Centurion, and they that were with him watching Iesus, saw the earthquake, and the thinges that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truely this was the Sonne of God.
27:55	And many women were there, beholding him a farre off, which had folowed Iesus from Galile, ministring vnto him.
27:56	Among whom was Marie Magdalene, and Marie the mother of Iames, and Ioses, and the mother of Zebedeus sonnes.
27:57	And when the euen was come, there came a riche man of Arimathea, named Ioseph, who had also himselfe bene Iesus disciple.
27:58	He went to Pilate, and asked ye body of Iesus. Then Pilate commanded ye body to be deliuered.
27:59	So Ioseph tooke the body, and wrapped it in a cleane linnen cloth,
27:60	And put it in his new tombe, which he had hewen out in a rocke, and rolled a great stone to the doore of the sepulchre, and departed.
27:61	And there was Marie Magdalene, and the other Marie sitting ouer against the sepulchre.
27:62	Nowe the next day that followed the Preparation of the Sabbath, the hie Priestes and Pharises assembled to Pilate,
27:63	And said, Syr, we remember that that deceiuer saide, while he was yet aliue, Within three dayes I will rise.
27:64	Command therefore, that the sepulchre be made sure vntill the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steale him away, and say vnto the people, He is risen from the dead: so shall the last errour be worse then the first.
27:65	Then Pilate saide vnto them, Ye haue a watch: goe, and make it sure as ye knowe.
27:66	And they went, and made the sepulchre sure with the watch, and sealed the stone.


27:1	When the mornynge was come all ye chefe prestes and the elders of ye people helde a counsayle agenst Iesu to put him to deeth
27:2	and brought him bounde and delivered him vnto Poncius Pilate the debite.
27:3	Then when Iudas which betrayed him sawe that he was condempned he repented him sylfe and brought ageyne the .xxx. plattes of sylver to ye chefe prestes and elders
27:4	sayinge: I have synned betrayinge the innocent bloud. And they sayde: what is that to vs? Se thou to that.
27:5	And he cast doune the sylver plattes in the temple and departed and went and hounge him sylfe.
27:6	And the chefe prestes toke the sylver plattes and sayd: it is not lawfull for to put them in to the treasury because it is the pryce of bloud.
27:7	And they toke counsell and bought with them a potters felde to bury strangers in.
27:8	Wherfore that felde is called the felde of bloud vntyll this daye.
27:9	Then was fulfylled that which was spoken by Ieremy the Prophet sayinge: and they toke .xxx. sylver plattes the prise of him that was valued whom they bought of the chyldren of Israel
27:10	and they gave them for the potters felde as the Lorde appoynted me.
27:11	Iesus stode before the debite: and the debite axed him sayinge: Arte thou the kynge of ye Iues? Iesus sayd vnto him: Thou sayest
27:12	and when he was accused of ye chefe prestes and elders he answered nothinge.
27:13	Then sayd Pilate vnto him: hearest thou not how many thinges they laye ageynste ye?
27:14	And he answered him to never a worde: in so moche that the debite marveylled greatlie.
27:15	At that feest the debite was wonte to deliver vnto ye people a presoner whom they wolde desyer.
27:16	He had then a notable presoner called Barrabas.
27:17	And when they were gadered together Pilate sayde vnto the: whether wyll ye that I geve losse vnto you Barrabas or Iesus which is called Christ?
27:18	For he knewe well that for envie they had delivred him.
27:19	When he was set doune to geve iudgemet his wyfe sent to him sayinge: have thou nothinge to do with that iuste man. For I have suffered many thinges this daye in a dreame about him.
27:20	But the chefe preestes and the elders had parswaded the people that they shulde axe Barrabas and shulde destroye Iesus.
27:21	Then the debite answered and sayde vnto them: whether of the twayne wyll ye that I let loosse vnto you? And they sayde Barrabas.
27:22	Pilate sayde vnto them: what shall I do then with Iesus which is called Christ? They all sayde to him: let him be crucified.
27:23	Then sayde the debite: what evyll hath he done? And they cryed the more sayinge: let him be crucified.
27:24	When Pilate sawe that he prevayled nothinge but that moare busines was made he toke water and wasshed his hondes before ye people sayinge: I am innocent of the bloud of this iuste person and that ye shall se.
27:25	Then answered all the people and sayde: his bloud be on vs and on oure chyldren.
27:26	Then let he Barrabas loose vnto them and scourged Iesus and delivered him to be crucified.
27:27	Then the soudeours of the debite toke Iesus vnto the comen hall and gaddered vnto him all the company.
27:28	And they stripped him and put on him a purpyll roobe
27:29	and platted a croune of thornes and put vpon his heed and a rede in his ryght honde: and bowed their knees before him and mocked him saying: hayle kinge of the Iewes:
27:30	and spitted vpon him and toke the rede and smoote him on the heed.
27:31	And when they had mocked him they toke the robe of him ageyne and put his awne reymet on him and leed him awaye to crucify him.
27:32	And as they came out they fonnde a man of Cyren named Simon: him they compelled to beare his crosse.
27:33	And whe they cam vnto ye place called Golgotha (that is to saye a place of deed mens sculles)
27:34	they gave him veneger to drinke mengled with gall. And when he had tasted therof he wolde not drinke.
27:35	When they had crucified him they parted his garmentes and did cast lottes: to fulfyll that was spoken by the prophet. They deuyded my garmetes amonge them: and apon my vesture did cast loottes.
27:36	And they sate and watched him there.
27:37	And they set vp over his heed the cause of his deeth written. This is Iesus the kynge of the Iewes.
27:38	And ther were two theves crucified with him one on ye right honde and another on the lyfte.
27:39	They that passed by revyled him waggynge ther heeddes
27:40	and sayinge: Thou that destroyest the temple of God and byldest it in thre dayes save thy sylfe. If thou be ye sonne of God come doune from the crosse.
27:41	Lykwyse also the hye prestes mockinge him with the scribes aud elders sayde:
27:42	He saved other him sylfe he can not save. If he be ye kynge of Israel: let him now come doune from the crosse and we will beleve him.
27:43	He trusted in God let him deliver him now yf he will have him: for he sayde I am the sonne of God.
27:44	That same also the theves which were crucified with him cast in his tethe.
27:45	From the sixte houre was there dercknes over all the londe vnto the nynth houre.
27:46	And about ye nynth houre Iesus cryed with a loude voyce sayinge: Eli Eli lama asbathani. That is to saye my God my God why hast thou forsaken me?
27:47	Some of them that stode there when they herde that sayde: This man calleth for Helyas.
27:48	And streyght waye one of them ranne and toke a sponge and filled it full of veneger and put it on a rede and gave him to drinke.
27:49	Other sayde let be: let vs se whyther Helyas will come and deliver him.
27:50	Iesus cryed agayne with a lowde voyce and yelded vp the goost.
27:51	And beholde the vayle of the temple dyd rent in twayne from ye toppe to the bottome and the erth dyd quake and the stones dyd rent
27:52	and graves dyd open: and the bodies of many sainctes which slept arose
27:53	and came out of ye graves after his resurreccion and came into the holy cite and appered vnto many.
27:54	When the Centurion and they that were with him watchinge Iesus sawe ye erth quake and those thinges which hapened they feared greatly sayinge. Of a surete this was the sonne of God.
27:55	And many wemen were there beholdinge him a farre of which folowed Iesus fro Galile ministringe vnto him.
27:56	Amonge which was Mary Magdalen and Mary the mother of Iames and Ioses and ye mother of zebedes chyldren.
27:57	When the even was come there came a ryche man of Aramathia named Ioseph which same also was Iesus disciple.
27:58	He went to Pilate and begged the body of Iesus. Then Pilate commaunded the body to be delivered.
27:59	And Ioseph toke the body and wrapped it in a clene lynnyn clooth
27:60	and put it in his newe tombe which he had hewen out even in the roke and rolled a greate stone to the dore of ye sepulcre and departed.
27:61	And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sittynge over ageynste the sepulcre.
27:62	The nexte daye that foloweth good frydaye the hye prestes and pharises got them selves to Pilate
27:63	and sayde: Syr we remember yt this deceaver sayde whyll he was yet alyve After thre dayes I will aryse agayne.
27:64	Commaunde therfore that the sepulcre be made sure vntyll ye thyrd daye lest paraventure his disciples come and steale him awaye and saye vnto the people he is rysen from deeth and the laste erroure be worsse then the fyrst.
27:65	Pilate sayde vnto them. Take watche men: Go and make it as sure as ye can.
27:66	And they went and made the sepulcre sure with watche men and sealed the stone.
