3:1And in the .xv. yeare of the raygne of Tiberius the Emperoure, Pontius Pilate beiynge lieftenaunte of Iury, and Herode beyinge Tethrarch of Galyle, and hys brother Philippe Tethrarchin Iturea & in the region of Traconytes, and Lysanyas the Tetrarche of Abilene,
3:2when Anna and Cayphas were the hye pryestes: the word of God came vuto Iohn the sonne of Zacharias in the wildernes.
3:3And he came into all the costes about Iordan, preaching the baptisme of repentaunce for the remissyon of synnes,
3:4as it is written in the boke of the sayinges of Esaias the prophete which sayeth. The voyce of a cryer in wildernes, prepare the waye of the Lorde, make hys pathes strayght.
3:5Euerye valley shall be fylled, and euerye mountayne and hyll shall be brought lowe. And croked thinges shalbe made straight: and the rough wayes shalbe made smoth:
3:6and all fleshe shall se the sauioure sent of God.
3:7Then sayde he to the people that were come to be baptysed of him. O generacion of vipers, who hath taught you to flye from the wrath to come?
3:8Bringe forth due frutes of repentaunce, and begin not to saye in your selues, we haue Abraham to our father: For I say vnto you God is able of these stones to rayse vp chyldren vnto Abraham.
3:9Now also is the axe lyed vnto the rote of the trees, so that euery tree which bringeth not forth good frute shall be hewen doune, and cast into the fyre.
3:10And the people axed him sayinge: What shall we do then?
3:11He aunswered and sayd vnto theim: He that hath two cotes, let him parte with him that hath none, & he that hath meate let him do lykewyse.
3:12Then came there publicans to be baptysed, and sayde vnto hym: Maister, what shall we do?
3:13And he sayde vnto them: require nomore then that which is appointed vnto you.
3:14The souldioures lykewyse demaunded of him saiynge: and what shall we do? And he sayde to them: Do violence to no man: neither trouble any man wrongfullye: but be content with your wages.
3:15As the people were in a doubte, and all men disputed in their hertes of Iohn, whither he were very Christ,
3:16Iohn aunswered and sayde to them all: I baptyse you with water, but a stronger then I cometh after me, whose shoe latchet I am not worthy to vnlouse: he wyll baptyse you with the holye ghost, and with fyre.
3:17Which hath his fanne in his hande, and wyll purge his floore, and wyll gather the corne into his barne, but the chaffe wil he burne with fyre that neuer shalbe quenched.
3:18And many other thinges in his exhortacion preached he vnto the people.
3:19Then Herode the Tetrarche (when he was rebuked of him for Herodias his brothers wyfe and for al the euyls, which Herode had done)
3:20added this aboue al, and laied Ihon in prison.
3:21And it fortuned as all the people receyued baptisme (And when Iesus was baptised and did praye) that heauen was opened,
3:22and the holye ghost came doune in a bodelye shape lyke a done vpon him, and a voyce came from heauen saiynge: thou art my deare sonne, in the do I delyte.
3:23And Iesus him selfe was entring the thirthy yeare of his age as men supposed hym to be the sonne of Ioseph. which was the sonne of Hely,
3:24which was the sonne of Mathat, which was the sonne of Leui, which was the sonne of Melchi. which was the sonne of Ianna, which was the sonne of Ioseph,
3:25which was the sonne of Mattathias, which was the sonne of Amos, which was the sonne of Nasum, which was the sonne of Esli, which was the sonne of Nagge,
3:26which was the sonne of Maath, which was the sonne of Matathias, which was the sonne of Semei, which was the sonne of Iosech, which was the sonne of Iuda,
3:27which was the sonne of Ioanna, which was the sonne of Rhesia, which was the sonne of Zorobabel, which was the sonne of Salathiel, which was the sonne of Neri,

3:35which was the sonne of Saruch, which was the sonne of Ragan, which was the sonne of Phalec, which was the sonne of Heber, which was the sonne of Sala,
3:36which was the sonne of Cainan, which was the sonne of Arphaxat, which was the sonne of Sem, which was the sonne of Noe, which was the sonne of Lameth,
3:37which was the sonne of Mathusalem, which was the sonne of Enoch, which was the sonne of Iareth, which was the sonne of Malalehel, which was the sonne of Cainan,
3:38which was the sonne of Enos, which was the sonne of Seth, which was the sonne of Adam, which was the sonne of God,

 

3:1Nowe in the fifteenth yeere of the reigne of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being gouernour of Iudea, and Herod being Tetrarch of Galile, and his brother Philip Tetrarch of Iturea, and of the countrey of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the Tetrarch of Abilene,
3:2(When Annas and Caiaphas were the hie Priestes) the worde of God came vnto Iohn, the sonne of Zacharias in the wildernes.
3:3And hee came into all the coastes about Iordan, preaching the baptisme of repentance for the remission of sinnes,
3:4As it is written in the booke of the sayings of Esaias the Prophet, which saith, The voyce of him that crieth in the wildernes is, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make his paths straight.
3:5Euery valley shalbe filled, and euery mountaine and hill shall be brought lowe, and crooked things shalbe made straight, and the rough wayes shalbe made smoothe.
3:6And all flesh shall see the saluation of God.
3:7Then said he to the people that were come out to be baptized of him, O generations of vipers, who hath forewarned you to flee from the wrath to come?
3:8Bring foorth therefore fruites worthy amendment of life, and beginne not to say with your selues, We haue Abraham to our father: for I say vnto you, that God is able of these stones to raise vp children vnto Abraham.
3:9Nowe also is the axe layed vnto the roote of the trees: therefore euery tree which bringeth not foorth good fruite, shalbe hewen downe, and cast into the fire.
3:10Then the people asked him, saying, What shall we doe then?
3:11And he answered, and said vnto them, He that hath two coates, let him part with him that hath none: and hee that hath meate, let him doe likewise.
3:12Then came there Publicanes also to bee baptized, and saide vnto him, Master, what shall we doe?
3:13And hee saide vnto them, Require no more then that which is appointed vnto you.
3:14The souldiers likewise demaunded of him, saying, And what shall we doe? And he saide vnto them, Doe violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages.
3:15As the people waited, and all men mused in their heartes of Iohn, if he were not that Christ,
3:16Iohn answered, and saide to them all, In deede I baptize you with water, but one stronger then I, commeth, whose shoes latchet I am not worthy to vnloose: hee will baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire.
3:17Whose fanne is in his hande, and hee will make cleane his floore, and will gather the wheate into his garner, but the chaffe will hee burne vp with fire that neuer shalbe quenched.
3:18Thus then exhorting with many other things, he preached vnto the people.
3:19But when Herod the Tetrarch was rebuked of him, for Herodias his brother Philips wife, and for all the euils which Herod had done,
3:20He added yet this aboue all, that he shut vp Iohn in prison.
3:21Nowe it came to passe, as all the people were baptized, and that Iesus was baptized and did pray, that the heauen was opened:
3:22And the holy Ghost came downe in a bodily shape like a doue, vpon him, and there was a voyce from heauen, saying, Thou art my beloued Sonne: in thee I am well pleased.
3:23And Iesus himselfe began to bee about thirtie yeere of age, being as men supposed the sonne of Ioseph, which was the sonne of Eli,
3:24The sonne of Matthat, the sonne of Leui, the sonne of Melchi, the sonne of Ianna, the sonne of Ioseph,
3:25The sonne of Mattathias, the sonne of Amos, the sonne of Naum, the sonne of Esli, the sonne of Nagge,
3:26The sonne of Maath, the sonne of Mattathias, the sonne of Semei, the sonne of Ioseph, the sonne of Iuda,
3:27The sonne of Ioanna, the sonne of Rhesa, the sonne of Zorobabel, the sonne of Salathiel, the sonne of Neri,
3:28The sonne of Melchi, the sonne of Addi, the sonne of Cosam, the sonne of Elmodam, the sonne of Er,

3:21Now when all the people were baptized, and it came to passe that Iesus also being baptized, and praying, the heauen was opened:
3:22And the holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a Doue vpon him, and a voice came from heauen, which said, Thou art my beloued sonne, in thee I am well pleased.
