| 16:1 | And he sayde also vnto his disciples. Ther was a certayn ryche man, whichhad a stewarde, and the same was accused vnto hym, that he had wasted hys goodes. |
| 16:2 | And he called him, and sayde vnto him: How is it, that I heare thys of the? Geue acomptes of thy stewardshype: For thou mayste be no longer steward. |
| 16:3 | The stewarde sayde with in him selfe: what shall I do? for my Master taketh awaye from me the stewardeshypp. I cannot dygge, and to begge I am ashamed. |
| 16:4 | I wote what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they maye receaue me into their houses. |
| 16:5 | So whan he had called all hys masters detters together, he sayde vnto the fyrst: how moch owest thou vnto my master? |
| 16:6 | And he sayd: an hundred tonnes of oyle. And he sayde vnto him: take thy byll, & syt doune quyckly and wryte fyftye. |
| 16:7 | Then sayd he to another: how moch owest thou? And he sayde: an hondred quarters of wheate. He sayde vnto him. Take thy byll, and wryte foure scoore. |
| 16:8 | And the Lorde commended the vniust stewarde, because he had done wysly. For the chyldren of this worlde are in theyr nacion, wyser then the chyldren of lyght. |
| 16:9 | And I saye vnto you: make you frendes of the vnryghteous mammon, that when ye shall haue nede they may receaue you into euerlastyng habitacyons. |
| 16:10 | He that is faythfull in that which is least, is faythfull also in moch. And he that is vnryghteous in the least: is vnryghteous also in moch. |
| 16:11 | So then, yf ye haue not ben faythfull in the vnryghteous mammon, who wyll beleue you in that which is true? |
| 16:12 | And yf ye haue not bene faythfull in another mannes busynes, who shal geue you that which is your awne? |
| 16:13 | No seruaunt can serue two masters: for ether he shall hate the one, and loue the other: or els he shall leane to the one, & despyse the other. Ye cannot serue God & mammon. |
| 16:14 | All these thynges herde the Pharyses also, which were couetous, and they mocked him. |
| 16:15 | And he sayd vnto them: Ye are they which iustifye youre selues before men: but God knoweth youre hertes. For that which is hyghlye estemed amonge men, is abhominable in the syght of God. |
| 16:16 | The lawe and the Prophetes raygned vntyll Iohn: and sence that tyme, the kyngdome of God is preached, and euery man stryueth to go in. |
| 16:17 | Easyer is it for heauen and erth to peryshe, then one tytle of the lawe to fayll. |
| 16:18 | Whosoeuer forsaketh hys wyfe, and marieth another, committeth aduoutrye. And he which marieth her that is deuorsed from her husbande, committeth aduoutry also. |
| 16:19 | Ther was a certayne ryche man, which was clothed in purple and fyne whyte, and fared deliciously euery dyae: |
| 16:20 | And there was a certayne begger named Lazarus, which laye at his gate full of sores, |
| 16:21 | desyrynge to be refresshed with the cromes, which fell from the ryche mannes borde. The dogges came also, and lycked his sores, |
| 16:22 | And it fortuned, that the begger died, and was caryed by the angelles into Abrahams bosome. The riche man also dyed, and was buryed. |
| 16:23 | And beynge in hell in tormentes, he lyfte vp hys eyes and sawe Abraham a farre of and Lazarus in hys bosome, |
| 16:24 | and he cryed and sayde: father Abraham: haue mercy on me, and sende Lazarus, that he maye dyppe the typpe of hys fynger in water, and cole my tonge: for I am tormented in this flame. |
| 16:25 | But Abraham sayde: Sonne remember that thou in thy lyfe tyme, receauedst thy pleasure, & contrary wyse, Lazarus receaued payne. But now is he conforted, and thou art punisshed. |
| 16:26 | Beyonde all this, betwene vs and you ther is a greate space set, so that they which wolde go from hence to you, cannot: nether maye come from thence to vs. |
| 16:27 | Then he sayd: I praye the therfore father, sende him to my fathers house. |
| 16:28 | (For I haue fyue brethren) for to warne them, lest they also come into this place of tourment. |
| 16:29 | Abraham sayde vnto him: they haue Moses and the Prophetes, let them heare them. |
| 16:30 | And he sayde: naye father Abraham, but yf one come vnto them from the deed, they wyll repent. |
| 16:31 | He sayde vnto him: If they heare not Moses and the Prophetes, nether wyll they beleue, though one rose from deeth agayne. |
| 16:1 | He seide also to hise disciplis, Ther was a riche man, that hadde a baili; and this was defamed to him, as he hadde wastid his goodis. |
| 16:2 | And he clepide hym, and seide to hym, What here Y this thing of thee? yelde reckynyng of thi baili, for thou miyte not now be baili. |
| 16:3 | And the baili seide with ynne him silf, What schal Y do, for my lord takith awei fro me the baili? delfe mai Y not, I schame to begge. |
| 16:4 | Y woot what Y schal do, that whanne Y am remeued fro the baili, thei resseyue me in to her hous. |
| 16:5 | Therfor whanne alle the dettours of his lord weren clepid togider, he seide to the firste, Hou myche owist thou to my lord? |
| 16:6 | And he seide, An hundrid barelis of oyle. And he seide to hym, Take thi caucioun, and sitte soone, and write fifti. |
| 16:7 | Aftirward he seide to another, And hou myche owist thou? Which answerde, An hundrid coris of whete. And he seide to hym, Take thi lettris, and write foure scoore. |
| 16:8 | And the lord preiside the baili of wickydnesse, for he hadde do prudentli; for the sones of this world ben more prudent in her generacioun than the sones of liyt. |
| 16:9 | And Y seie to you, make ye to you freendis of the ritchesse of wickidnesse, that whanne ye schulen fayle, thei resseyue you in to euerlastynge tabernaclis. |
| 16:10 | He that is trewe in the leeste thing, is trewe also in the more; and he that is wickid in a litil thing, is wickid also in the more. |
| 16:11 | Therfor if ye weren not trewe in the wickid thing of ritchesse, who schal bitake to you that that is verry? |
| 16:12 | And if ye weren not trewe in othere mennus thing, who schal yyue to you that that is youre? |
| 16:13 | No seruaunt may serue to twei lordis; for ether he schal hate `the toon, and loue the tothir; ethir he schal drawe to `the toon, and schal dispise the tothir. Ye moun not serue to God and to ritchesse. |
| 16:14 | But the Farisees, that weren coueytous, herden alle these thingis, and thei scorneden hym. |
| 16:15 | And he seide to hem, Ye it ben, that iustifien you bifor men; but God hath knowun youre hertis, for that that is hiy to men, is abhomynacioun bifor God. |
| 16:16 | The lawe and prophetis til to Joon; fro that tyme the rewme of God is euangelisid, and ech man doith violence in to it. |
| 16:17 | Forsothe it is liyter heuene and erthe to passe, than that o titil falle fro the lawe. |
| 16:18 | Euery man that forsakith his wijf, and weddith an other, doith letcherie; and he that weddith the wijf forsakun of the hosebonde, doith auowtrie. |
| 16:19 | There was a riche man, and was clothid in purpur, and whit silk, and eete euery dai schynyngli. |
| 16:20 | And there was a begger, Lazarus bi name, that lai at his yate ful of bilis, |
| 16:21 | and coueitide to be fulfillid of the crummes, that fellen doun fro the riche mannus boord, and no man yaf to hym; but houndis camen, and lickiden hise bilis. |
| 16:22 | And it was don, that the begger diede, and was borun of aungels in to Abrahams bosum. |
| 16:23 | And the riche man was deed also, and was biried in helle. And he reiside hise iyen, whanne he was in turmentis, and say Abraham afer, and Lazarus in his bosum. |
| 16:24 | And he criede, and seide, Fadir Abraham, haue merci on me, and sende Lazarus, that he dippe the ende of his fyngur in watir, to kele my tunge; for Y am turmentid in this flawme. |
| 16:25 | And Abraham seide to hym, Sone, haue mynde, for thou hast resseyued good thingis in thi lijf, and Lazarus also yuel thingis; but he is now coumfortid, and thou art turmentid. |
| 16:26 | And in alle these thingis a greet derk place is stablischid betwixe vs and you; that thei that wolen fro hennus passe to you, moun not, nethir fro thennus passe ouer hidur. |
| 16:27 | And he seide, Thanne Y preie thee, fadir, that thou sende hym in to the hous of my fadir. |
| 16:28 | For Y haue fyue britheren, that he witnesse to hem, lest also thei come in to this place of turmentis. |
| 16:29 | And Abraham seide to him, Thei han Moyses and the prophetis; here thei hem. |
| 16:30 | And he seide, Nay, fadir Abraham, but if ony of deed men go to hem, thei schulen do penaunce. |
| 16:31 | And he seide to hym, If thei heren not Moises and prophetis, nethir if ony of deed men rise ayen, thei schulen bileue to hym. |

| 16:22 | But it fortuned, that the poore man dyed, and was caried of the angels in to Abrahams bosome. The riche man dyed also, and was buried. |
| 16:23 | Now whan he was in the hell, he lift vp his eyes in the payne, and sawe Abraham afarre of, and Lazarus in his bosome: |
| 16:24 | and he cried, and sayde: Father Abraham, haue mercy vpon me, and sende Lazarus, that he maye dyppe the typpe of his fynger in water, & coole my tonge, for I am tormeted in this flame. |
| 16:25 | But Abraha saide: Remebre sonne, yt thou hast receaued good in yi life, & contrary wyse Lazarus receaued euell. But now is he comforted, and thou art tormented. |
| 16:26 | And beside all this, there is a greate space set betwene vs and you: so yt they which wolde go downe from hence vnto you, cannot: nether maye they passe ouer from thence vnto vs. |
| 16:27 | Then sayde he: I pray the then father, that thou wilt sende him vnto my fathers house, |
| 16:28 | for I haue yet fyue brethren, that he maye warne them, lest they also come in to this place of torment. |
| 16:29 | Abraham sayde vnto him: They haue Moses and the prophetes, let them heare them. |
| 16:30 | But he sayde: Nay father Abraham, but yf one wente vnto them fro the deed, they wolde do pennaunce. |
| 16:31 | Neuertheles he sayde vnto him: Yf they heare not Moses & the prophetes, then shal they not beleue also, though one rose agayne fro the deed. |
