Luke - Chapter: 23


23:1	And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him vnto Pilate.
23:2	And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow peruerting the nation, and forbidding to giue tribute to Cesar, saying, that he himselfe is Christ a king.
23:3	And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the king of the Iewes? And he answered him, & said, Thou sayest it.
23:4	Then saide Pilate to the chiefe Priests, and to the people, I finde no fault in this man.
23:5	And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth vp the people, teaching thorowout all Iurie, beginning from Galilee to this place.
23:6	When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean.
23:7	And assoone as he knew that hee belonged vnto Herods iurisdiction, hee sent him to Herode, who himselfe also was at Hierusalem at that time.
23:8	And when Herode saw Iesus, he was exceeding glad, for hee was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him, and hee hoped to haue seene some miracle done by him.
23:9	Then he questioned with him in many words, but he answered him nothing.
23:10	And the chiefe Priests and Scribes stood, and vehemently accused him.
23:11	And Herod with his men of warre set him at naught, and mocked him, and arayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him againe to Pilate.
23:12	And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together; for before, they were at enmitie betweene themselues.
23:13	And Pilate, when hee had called together the chiefe Priests, and the rulers, and the people,
23:14	Said vnto them, Ye haue brought this man vnto me, as one that peruerteth the people, and behold, I hauing examined him before you, haue found no fault in this man, touching those things whereof ye accuse him.
23:15	No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him, and loe, nothing worthy of death is done vnto him.
23:16	I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
23:17	For of necessitie hee must release one vnto them at the Feast.
23:18	And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release vnto vs Barabbas,
23:19	Who for a certaine sedition made in the citie, and for murder, was cast in prison.
23:20	Pilate therefore willing to release Iesus, spake againe to them:
23:21	But they cried, saying, Crucifie him, crucifie him.
23:22	And hee said vnto them the third time, Why, what euill hath he done? I haue found no cause of death in him, I will therefore chastise him, & let him goe.
23:23	And they were instant with loud voyces, requiring that he might be crucified: and the voyces of them, and of the chiefe Priests preuailed.
23:24	And Pilate gaue sentence that it should be as they required.
23:25	And he released vnto them, him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired, but he deliuered Iesus to their will.
23:26	And as they led him away, they laid hold vpon one Simon a Cyrenian, comming out of the countrey, and on him they laid the crosse, that hee might beare it after Iesus.
23:27	And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed & lamented him.
23:28	But Iesus turning vnto them, said, Daughters of Hierusalem, weepe not for me, but weepe for your selues, and for your children.
23:29	For beholde, the dayes are comming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that neuer bare, and the paps which neuer gaue sucke.
23:30	Then shall they begin to say to the mountaines, Fall on vs, and to the hils, Couer vs.
23:31	For if they doe these things in a green tree, what shalbe done in the drie?
23:32	And there were also two other malefactors led with him, to bee put to death.
23:33	And when they were come to the place which is called Caluarie, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
23:34	Then said Iesus, Father, forgiue them, for they know not what they doe: And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
23:35	And the people stood beholding, & the rulers also with them derided him, saying, Hee saued others, let him saue himselfe, if he be Christ, ye chosen of God.
23:36	And the souldiers also mocked him, comming to him, and offering him vineger,
23:37	And saying, If thou be the king of the Iewes, saue thy selfe.
23:38	And a superscription also was written ouer him in letters of Greeke, and Latin, & Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE IEWES.
23:39	And one of ye malefactors, which were hanged, railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, saue thy selfe and vs.
23:40	But the other answering, rebuked him, saying, Doest not thou feare God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
23:41	And we indeed iustly; for we receiue the due reward of our deeds, but this man hath done nothing amisse.
23:42	And he said vnto Iesus, Lord, remember me when thou commest into thy kingdome.
23:43	And Iesus said vnto him, Uerily, I say vnto thee, to day shalt thou be with me in Paradise.
23:44	And it was about the sixt houre, and there was a darkenesse ouer all the earth, vntill the ninth houre.
23:45	And the Sunne was darkened, and the vaile of the temple was rent in the mids.
23:46	And when Iesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: And hauing said thus, he gaue vp the ghost.
23:47	Now when the Centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
23:48	And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.
23:49	And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood a farre off, beholding these things.
23:50	And behold, there was a man named Ioseph, a counseller, and hee was a good man, and a iust.
23:51	(The same had not consented to the counsell and deede of them) he was of Arimathea, a city of the Iewes (who also himselfe waited for the kingdome of God.)
23:52	This man went vnto Pilate, and begged the body of Iesus.
23:53	And he tooke it downe, and wrapped it in linnen, and layd it in a Sepulchre that was hewen in stone, wherein neuer man before was layd.
23:54	And that day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew on.
23:55	And the women also which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the Sepulchre, and how his body was layd.
23:56	And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments, and rested the Sabbath day, according to the commandement.

23:3	But Pilate axed him, and sayde: Art thou the kynge of the Iewes? He answered him, and sayde: Thou sayest it.
23:4	Pilate sayde vnto ye hye prestes and to the people: I fynde no cause in this man.
23:5	But they were the more fearce, and sayde: He hath moued the people, in that he hath taught here & there in all the londe of Iewry, and hath begonne at Galile vnto this place.
23:6	Whan Pilate herde mencion of Galile, he axed whether he were of Galile.
23:7	And whan he perceaued that he was vnder Herodes iurisdiccion he sent him to Herode, which was also at Ierusale in those dayes.
23:8	When Herode sawe Iesus, he was exceadinge glad, for he had longe bene desyrous to se him: because he had herde moch of him, & hoped to se a miracle of hi.
23:9	And he axed him many thinges. Neuertheles he answered him nothinge.
23:10	The hye prestes and scrybes stode, and accused him sore.
23:11	But Herode wt his men of warre despysed him, and mocked him, put a whyte garmet vpo him, and sent him agayne vnto Pilate.
23:12	Vpo ye same daye were Pilate and Herode made frendes together, for afore they had bene at variaunce.
23:13	Pilate called the hye prestes, and the rulers, and the people together,
23:14	and sayde vnto the: Ye haue brought this man vnto me, as one that peruerteth the people, and beholde, I haue examyned him before you, & fynde in the ma none of the causes, wherof ye accuse him:
23:15	Nor yet Herode: for I sent you to him, and beholde, there is brought vpon hi nothinge, that is worthy of death.
23:16	Therfore wil I chasten him, and let him lowse:
23:17	For he must haue let one lowse vnto them after the custome of the feast.
23:18	Then cried the whole multitude, and sayde: Awaye with him, and delyuer vnto vs Barrabas,
23:19	which for insurreccion made in the cite, and because of a murthur, was cast in to preson.
23:20	Then called Pilate vnto them agayne, & wolde haue let Iesus lowse.
23:21	But they cried, and sayde: Crucifye him, Crucifye him.
23:22	Yet sayde he vnto them, the thirde tyme: What euell the hath he done? I fynde no cause of death in hi, therfore wil I chasten him, and let him go.
23:23	But they laye styll vpon him with greate crye, and requyred yt he might be crucified. And the voyce of the and of the hye preastes preuayled.
23:24	And Pilate gaue sentence, that it shulde be as they requyred,
23:25	and let lowse vnto the, him, that for insurreccio and murthur was cast in to preson, whom they desyred, but gaue Iesus ouer vnto their wyll.
23:26	And as they led him awaye, they toke one Simon of Cyren (which came from the felde) and layed ye crosse vpon him, to beare it after Iesus.
23:27	And there folowed him a greate multitude of people and of wemen, which bewayled and lamented him.
23:28	But Iesus turned him aboute vnto the, and sayde: Ye doughters of Ierusale, wepe not ouer me: but wepe ouer youre selues, and ouer youre childre.
23:29	For beholde, the tyme wil come, wherin it shal be sayde: Blessed are the baren, and the wombes that haue not borne, and the pappes that haue not geuen sucke.
23:30	Then shal they begynne to saye vnto the mountaynes: Fall vpon vs. And to the hylles: Couer vs.
23:31	For yf this be done to a grene tre, what shalbe done then to the drye?
23:32	And two other (which were myssdoers) were led out also, to be put to death with him.
23:33	And wha they came to ye place, which is called Caluery, they crucifyed him euen there, and the two myssdoers with him, the one on the righte hande, the other on ye left.
23:34	But Iesus sayde: Father, forgeue them, for they wote not what they do. And they parted his garmentes, and cast lottes therfore.
23:35	And the people stode and behelde. And the rulers mocked him with them, and sayde: He hath helped other, let him helpe him self now, yf he be Christ ye chosen of God.
23:36	The soudyers also mocked him, wete vnto him, & brought him vyneger,
23:37	and sayde: Yf thou be the kynge of the Iewes, then helpe thyself.
23:38	And aboue ouer him was this superscripcion wrytten with letters of Greke, Latyn, and Hebrue: This is the kynge of the Iewes.
23:39	And one of the myssdoers that hanged there, blasphemed him, and sayde: Yf thou be Christ, then helpe thy self and vs.
23:40	Then answered the other, rebuked him, and sayde: And thou fearest not God also, which art yet in like danacion.
23:41	And truly we are therin be right, for we receaue acordinge to oure dedes. As for this man, he hath done nothinge amysse.
23:42	And he sayde vnto Iesus: LORDE, remembre me, whan thou commest in to thy kyngdome.
23:43	And Iesus sayde vnto him: Verely I saye vnto the: To daye shalt thou be with me in Paradyse.
23:44	And it was aboute the sixte houre, and there was darknesse ouer ye whole londe vntyll the nyenth houre.
23:45	And the Sonne was darkened, and the vayle of the temple rente in two euen thorow the myddes.
23:46	And Iesus cryed loude, & sayde: Father, in to thy handes I commende my sprete. And whan he had so sayde, he gaue vp the goost.
23:47	But whan the Captayne sawe what had happened, he praysed God, and sayde: Verely this was a iust ma.
23:48	And all the people that stode by & behelde, whan they sawe what was done, smote vpon their brestes, & turned backe agayne.
23:49	But all his acquantaunce, and the wemen that had folowed him out of Galile, stode a farre of, and behelde all these thinges.
23:50	And beholde, a ma named Ioseph, a Senatour, which was a good iust man,
23:51	the same had not consented vnto their councell, and dede, which was of Arimathia a cite of the Iewes, which same also wayted for the kyngdome of God:
23:52	he wete vnto Pilate, and axed the body of Iesus.
23:53	And the toke him downe, wrapped him in a lynnen cloth, and layed him in a hewen sepulcre, wherin neuer man was layed.
23:54	And it was the daye of preparinge, and the Sabbath drue on.
23:55	The wemen that were come with him out of Galile, folowed him, and behelde the Sepulcre, & how his body was layed.
23:56	But they returned, and made ready the spyces & anontmetes. And vpon the Sabbath they rested, acordinge to the lawe.


23:1	And al the multitude of hem arysen, and ledden hym to Pilat.
23:2	And thei bigunnen to accuse hym, and seiden, We han foundun this turnynge vpsodoun oure folk, and forbedynge tributis to be youun to the emperour, and seiynge that hym silf is Crist and kyng.
23:3	And Pilat axide hym, and seide, Art thou kyng of Jewis? And he answeride, and seide, Thou seist.
23:4	And Pilat seide to the princis of prestis, and to the puple, Y fynde no thing of cause in this man.
23:5	And thei woxen stronger, and seiden, He moueth the puple, techynge thorou al Judee, bigynnynge fro Galile til hidir.
23:6	And Pilat herynge Galile axide, if he were a man of Galile.
23:7	And whanne he knewe that he was of the powere of Eroude, he sente hym to Eroude; which was at Jerusalem in tho daies.
23:8	And whanne Eroude siy Jhesu, he ioyede ful myche; for long tyme he coueitide to se hym, for he herde many thingis of hym, and hopide to see sum tokene `to be don of hym.
23:9	And he axide hym in many wordis; and he answeride no thing to hym.
23:10	And the princis of preestis and the scribis stoden, stidfastli accusynge hym.
23:11	But Eroude with his oost dispiside hym, and scornede hym, and clothide with a white cloth, and sente hym ayen to Pilat.
23:12	And Eroude and Pilat weren maad freendis fro that dai; for bifor thei weren enemyes togidre.
23:13	And Pilat clepide togider the princis of prestis and the maiestratis of the puple, and seide to hem,
23:14	Ye han brouyt to me this man, as turnynge awey the puple, and lo! Y axynge bifor you fynde no cause in this man of these thingis, in whiche ye accusen hym;
23:15	nether Eroude, for he hath sent hym ayen to vs, and lo! no thing worthi of deth is don to hym.
23:16	And therfor Y schal amende hym, and delyuere hym.
23:17	But he moste nede delyuer to hem oon bi the feest dai.
23:18	And al the puple criede togidir, and seide, Do `awei hym, and delyuer to vs Barabas;
23:19	which was sent `in to prisoun for disturblyng maad in the cite, and for mansleynge.
23:20	And eftsoone Pilat spak to hem, and wolde delyuer Jhesu.
23:21	And thei vndurcrieden, and seiden, Crucifie, crucifie hym.
23:22	And the thridde tyme he seide to hem, For what yuel hath this don? Y fynde no cause of deeth in hym; therfor Y schal chastise hym, and Y schal delyuer.
23:23	And thei contynueden with greet voicis axynge, that he schulde be crucified; and the voicis of hem woxen stronge.
23:24	And Pilat demyde her axyng to be don.
23:25	And he delyueride to hem hym, that for mansleyng and sedicioun was sent in to prisoun, whom thei axiden; but he bitook Jhesu to her wille.
23:26	And whanne thei ledden hym, thei token a man, Symon of Syrenen, comynge fro the toun, and thei leiden on hym the cross to bere aftir Jhesu.
23:27	And there suede hym myche puple, and wymmen that weiliden, and bymorneden hym.
23:28	And Jhesus turnede to hem, and seide, Douytris of Jerusalem, nyle ye wepe on me, but wepe ye on youre silf and on youre sones.
23:29	For lo! daies schulen come, in whiche it schal be seid, Blessid be bareyn wymmen, and wombis that han not borun children, and the tetis that han not youun souke.
23:30	Thanne thei schulen bigynne to seie to mounteyns, Falle ye doun on vs, and to smale hillis, Keuere ye vs.
23:31	For if in a greene tre thei don these thingis, what schal be don in a drie?
23:32	Also othere twei wickid men weren led with hym, to be slayn.
23:33	And `aftir that thei camen in to a place, that is clepid of Caluerie, there thei crucifieden hym, and the theues, oon on the riyt half, and `the tother on the left half.
23:34	But Jhesus seide, Fadir, foryyue hem, for thei witen not what thei doon.
23:35	And thei departiden his clothis, and kesten lottis. And the puple stood abidynge; and the princis scorneden hym with hem, and seiden, Othere men he maad saaf; make he hym silf saaf, if this be Crist, the chosun of God.
23:36	And the knyytis neiyeden, and scorneden hym, and profreden vynegre to hym,
23:37	and seiden, If thou art king of Jewis, make thee saaf.
23:38	And the superscripcioun was writun ouer hym with Greke lettris, and of Latyn, and of Ebreu, This is the kyng of Jewis.
23:39	And oon of these theues that hangiden, blasfemyde hym, and seide, If thou art Crist, make thi silf saaf and vs.
23:40	But `the tothir answerynge, blamyde hym, and seide, Nether thou dredist God, that art in the same dampnacioun?
23:41	And treuli we iustli, for we han resseiued worthi thingis to werkis; but this dide no thing of yuel.
23:42	And he seide to Jhesu, Lord, haue mynde of me, whanne thou comest `in to thi kyngdom.
23:43	And Jhesus seide to hym, Treuli Y seie to thee, this dai thou schalt be with me in paradise.
23:44	And it was almest the sixte our, and derknessis weren maad in al the erthe `in to the nynthe our.
23:45	And the sun was maad derk, and the veile of the temple was to-rent atwo.

23:50	And lo! a man, Joseph bi name, of Aramathie, a cite of Judee, that was a decurien, a good man and a iust,
23:51	this man concentide not to the counseil and to the dedis of hem; and he abood the kyngdom of God.
23:52	This Joseph cam to Pilat, and axide the bodi of Jhesu,
23:53	and took it doun, and wlappide it in a cleene lynen cloth, and leide hym in a graue hewun, in which not yit ony man hadde be leid.
23:54	And the dai was the euen of the halidai, and the sabat bigan to schyne.
23:55	And the wymmen suynge, that camen with hym fro Galile, sayn the graue, and hou his bodi was leid.
23:56	And thei turneden ayen, and maden redi swete smellynge spicis, and oynementis; but in the sabat thei restiden, aftir the comaundement.
