John - Chapter: 4

>
4:1When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus more disciples doth make and baptize than John,
4:2(though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,)
4:3he left Judea and went away again to Galilee,
4:4and it was behoving him to go through Samaria.
4:5He cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son;
4:6and there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour;
4:7there cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, `Give me to drink;'
4:8for his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals;
4:9the Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, `How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?' for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans.
4:10Jesus answered and said to her, `If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.'
4:11The woman saith to him, `Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water?
4:12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?'
4:13Jesus answered and said to her, `Every one who is drinking of this water shall thirst again;
4:14but whoever may drink of the water that I will give him, may not thirst -- to the age; and the water that I will give him shall become in him a well of water, springing up to life age-during.'
4:15The woman saith unto him, `Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.'
4:16Jesus saith to her, `Go, call thy husband, and come hither;'
4:17the woman answered and said, `I have not a husband.' Jesus saith to her, `Well didst thou say -- A husband I have not;
4:18for five husbands thou hast had, and, now, he whom thou hast is not thy husband; this hast thou said truly.'
4:19The woman saith to him, `Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet;
4:20our fathers in this mountain did worship, and ye -- ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it behoveth to worship.'
4:21Jesus saith to her, `Woman, believe me, that there doth come an hour, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father;
4:22ye worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews;
4:23but, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him;
4:24God `is' a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.'
4:25The woman saith to him, `I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;'
4:26Jesus saith to her, `I am `he', who am speaking to thee.'
4:27And upon this came his disciples, and were wondering that with a woman he was speaking, no one, however, said, `What seekest thou?' or `Why speakest thou with her?'
4:28The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and saith to the men,
4:29`Come, see a man, who told me all things -- as many as I did; is this the Christ?'
4:30They went forth therefore out of the city, and were coming unto him.
4:31And in the meanwhile his disciples were asking him, saying, `Rabbi, eat;'
4:32and he said to them, `I have food to eat that ye have not known.'
4:33The disciples then said one to another, `Did any one bring him anything to eat?'
4:34Jesus saith to them, `My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work;
4:35do not say that it is yet four months, and the harvest cometh; lo, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and see the fields, that they are white unto harvest already.
4:36`And he who is reaping doth receive a reward, and doth gather fruit to life age-during, that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping may rejoice together;
4:37for in this the saying is the true one, that one is the sower and another the reaper.
4:38I sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others laboured, and ye into their labour have entered.
4:39And from that city many believed in him, of the Samaritans, because of the word of the woman testifying, -- `He told me all things -- as many as I did.'
4:40When, then, the Samaritans came unto him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days;
4:41and many more did believe because of his word,
4:42and said to the woman -- `No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world -- the Christ.'
4:43And after the two days he went forth thence, and went away to Galilee,
4:44for Jesus himself testified that a prophet in his own country shall not have honour;
4:45when then, he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem in the feast -- for they also went to the feast.
4:46Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum,
4:47he, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die.
4:48Jesus then said unto him, `If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.'
4:49The courtier saith unto him, `Sir, come down before my child die;'
4:50Jesus saith to him, `Be going on; thy son doth live.' And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on,
4:51and he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying -- `Thy child doth live;'
4:52he inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him -- `Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;'
4:53then the father knew that `it was' in that hour in which Jesus said to him -- `Thy son doth live,' and he himself believed, and his whole house;
4:54this again a second sign did Jesus, having come out of Judea to Galilee.

4:1Assone as the Lorde had knowledge how the Pharises had hearde that Iesus made and baptised moo disciples then Iohn
4:2(though that Iesus him selfe baptised not: but his disciples)
4:3he lefte Iewry and departed agayne into Galile.
4:4And it was so that he must nedes goo thorowe Samaria.
4:5Then came he to a cyte of Samaria called Sichar besydes the possession that Iacob gave to his sonne Ioseph.
4:6And there was Iacobs well. Iesus then weryed in his iorney sate thus on the well. And it was about the sixte houre:
4:7and there came a woman of Samaria to drawe water. And Iesus sayde vnto her: geve me drynke.
4:8For his disciples were gone awaye vnto the toune to bye meate.
4:9Then sayde the woman of Samaria vnto him: how is it that thou beinge a Iewe axest drinke of me which am a Samaritane? for the Iewes medle not with the Samaritans.
4:10Iesus answered and sayde vnto hir: yf thou knewest the gyfte of God and who it is that sayeth to the geve me drynke thou woldest have axed of him and he wolde have geven the water of lyfe.
4:11The woman sayde vnto him. Syr thou hast no thinge to drawe with and the well is depe: from whence then hast thou yt water of lyfe?
4:12Arte thou greater then oure father Iacob which gave vs the well and he him silfe dranke therof and his chyldren and his catell?
4:13Iesus answered and sayde vnto hir: whosoever drinketh of this water shall thurst agayne.
4:14But whosoever shall drinke of ye water yt I shall geve him shall never be more a thyrst: but the water that I shall geve him shalbe in him a well of water springinge vp in to everlastinge lyfe.
4:15The woma sayd vnto him: Syr geve me of that water that I thyrst not nether come hedder to drawe.
4:16Iesus sayde vnto her. Go and call thy husband and come hydder.
4:17The woman answered and sayde to him: I have no husband.
4:18Iesus sayde to her. Thou hast well sayd I have no husbande. For thou haste had five husbandes and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband. That saydest thou truely.
4:19The woman sayde vnto him: Syr I perceave yt thou arte a prophet.
4:20Oure fathers worshipped in this mountayne: and ye saye that in Hierusalem is the place where men ought to worshippe.
4:21Iesus sayde vnto her: woman beleve me the houre cometh when ye shall nether in this moutayne nor yet at Ierusalem worshippe the father.
4:22Ye worshippe ye wot not what: we knowe what we worshippe. For salvacion cometh of the Iewes.
4:23But the houre commeth and nowe is when the true worshippers shall worshippe the father in sprete and in trouthe. For verely suche the father requyreth to worshippe him.
4:24God is a sprete and they that worshippe him must worshippe him in sprete and trouthe.
4:25The woman sayde vnto him: I wot well Messias shall come which is called Christ. When he is come he will tell vs all thinges.
4:26Iesus sayde vnto hir: I that speake vnto the am he.
4:27And eve at that poynte came his disciples and marvelled that he talked with the woman. Yet no man sayde vnto him: what meanest thou or why talkest thou with her?
4:28The woma then lefte her waterpot and went her waye into the cite and sayde to the men.
4:29Come se a man which tolde me all thinges yt ever I dyd. Is not he Christ?
4:30Then they went ont of the cite and came vnto him.
4:31And in ye meane while his disciples prayed him sayinge: Master eate.
4:32He sayde vnto the: I have meate to eate that ye knowe not of.
4:33Then sayd ye disciples bitwene them selves: hath eny ma brought him meate?
4:34Iesus sayde vnto them: my meate is to doo the will of him that sent me. And to fynnysshe his worke.
4:35Saye not ye: there are yet foure monethes and then cometh harvest? Beholde I saye vnto you lyfte vp youre eyes and loke on ye regios: for they are whyte all redy vnto harvest.
4:36And he ye repeth receaveth rewarde and gaddereth frute vnto life eternall: that bothe he that soweth and he yt repeth myght reioyse to gether.
4:37And herin is the sayinge true yt one soweth and another repeth.
4:38I sent you to repe yt whero ye bestowed no laboure. Other men laboured and ye are entred into their labours.
4:39Many of the Samaritas of that cyte beleved on him for ye sayinge of the woma which testified: he tolde me all thinges yt ever I dyd.
4:40Then when the Samaritas were come vnto him they besought him yt he wolde tary wt the. And he aboode there two dayes.
4:41And many moo beleved because of his awne wordes
4:42and sayd vnto the woman: Now we beleve not because of thy sayinge. For we have herde him oure selves and knowe that this is even in dede Christ the savioure of the worlde.
4:43After two dayes he departed thence and wet awaye into Galile.
4:44And Iesus him selfe testified that a Prophete hath none honoure in his awne countre.
4:45Then assone as he was come into Galile the Galileans receaved him which had sene all the thinges yt he dyd at Ierusalem at ye feast. For they wet also vnto ye feast daye.
4:46And Iesus came agayne into Cana of Galile wher he turned water into wyne. And ther was a certayne ruler whose sonne was sicke at Capernaum.
4:47Assone as the same herde that Iesus was come out of Iewry into Galile he wet vnto him and besought him yt he wolde descende and heale his sonne: For he was eve readie to dye.
4:48Then sayde Iesus vnto him: excepte ye se signes and wodres ye canot beleve.
4:49The ruler sayd vnto him: Syr come awaye or ever yt my chylde dye.
4:50Iesus sayde vnto him goo thy waye thy sonne liveth. And the ma beleved ye wordes yt Iesus had spoke vnto him and wet his waye.
4:51And anone as he went on his waye his servantes met him and tolde him sayinge: thy chylde liveth.
4:52Then enquyred he of the the houre when he begane to amende. And they sayde vnto him: Yester daye the sevethe houre the fever lefte him.
4:53And the father knew that it was the same houre in which Iesus sayde vnto him: Thy sonne liveth. And he beleved and all his housholde.
4:54Thys is agayne the seconde myracle yt Iesus dyd after he was come oute of Iewry into Galile.

4:1Now whan Iesus had knowlege, yt it was come to the eares of the Pharises, that Iesus made and baptised mo disciples the Ihon
4:2(howbeit Iesus himself baptysed not, but his disciples)
4:3he left the londe of Iewry, and departed agayne in to Galile.
4:4But he must nedes go thorow Samaria.
4:5Then came he in to a cite of Samaria, called Sichar, nye vnto ye pece of lode, yt Iacob gaue vnto Ioseph his sonne.
4:6And there was Iacobs well. Now whan Iesus was weerye of his iourney, he satt hi downe so vpo the well. And it was aboute the sixte houre.
4:7Then came there a woman of Samaria to drawe water. Iesus sayde vnto her: Geue me drynke.
4:8(For his disciples were gone their waye in to ye cite, to bye meate.)
4:9So the woman of Samaria sayde vnto him: How is it that thou axest drynke of me, seynge thou art a Iewe, and I a woman of Samaria? For the Iewes medle not with the Samaritans.
4:10Iesus answered, and sayde vnto her: Yf thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that sayeth vnto the, geue me drynke, thou woldest axe of him, and he wolde geue the, the water of life.
4:11The woman sayde vnto him: Syr, thou hast nothinge to drawe withall, and the well is depe, from whence hast thou then that water of life?
4:12Art thou greater then oure father Iacob, which gaue vs this well? And he himself dranke therof, and his children, and his catell.
4:13Iesus answered, and sayde vnto her: Who so euer drynketh of this water, shal thyrst agayne:
4:14But whosoeuer shal drynke of the water that I shal geue him, shal neuer be more a thyrst: but the water that I shal geue him, shalbe in him a well of water, which spryngeth vp in to euerlastinge life.
4:15The woman sayde vnto him: Syr, geue me that same water, that I thyrst not, nether nede to come hither to drawe.
4:16Iesus sayde vnto her: Go, call they hussbande, and come hither.
4:17The woman answered, and sayde vnto him: I haue no hussbande.
4:18Iesus sayde vnto her: Thou hast sayde well, I haue no hussbande: for thou hast had fyue hussbandes, and he whom thou hast now, is not thine hussbande: there saydest thou right.
4:19The woma sayde vnto him: Syr, I se, that thou art a prophet.
4:20Oure fathers worshipped vpon this mountayne, and ye saye, that at Ierusalem is the place, where men ought to worshippe.
4:21Iesus sayde vnto her: Woman, beleue me, the tyme commeth, that ye shal nether vpon this mountayne ner at Ierusalem worshippe the father.
4:22Ye wote not what ye worshippe, but we knowe what ye worshippe, for Saluacion commeth of the Iewes.
4:23But the tyme commeth, and is now allready, that the true worshippers shal worshippe the father in sprete and in the trueth: For the father wil haue soch so to worshippe him.
4:24God is a sprete, and they that worshippe him, must worshippe in sprete and in the trueth.
4:25The woma sayde vnto him: I wote that Messias shal come, which is called Christ. Whan he commeth, he shal tell vs all thinges.
4:26Iesus sayde vnto her: I that speake vnto the, am he.
4:27And in the meane season came his disciples, and they marueyled that he talked with the woman. Yet sayde no man: What axest thou, or what talkest thou with her?
4:28Then the woman let hir pot stonde, and wente in to the cite, and sayde vnto the people:
4:29Come, se a man, which hath tolde me all that euer I dyd, Is not he Christ?
4:30Then wente they out of the cite, and came vnto him:
4:31In the meane whyle his disciples prayed him, and sayde: Master, eate.
4:32But he sayde vnto them: I haue meate to eate, that ye knowe not of
4:33Then sayde the disciples amoge them selues: Hath eny man brought him meate?
4:34Iesus sayde vnto the: My meate is this, that I do the wyll of him that sent me, and to fynish his worke.
4:35Saye not ye youre selues: There are yet foure monethes, and then commeth the haruest? Beholde, I saye vnto you: lift vp youre eyes, and loke vpon the felde, for it is whyte allready vnto the haruest.
4:36And he that reapeth, receaueth rewarde, and gathereth frute to euerlastinge life, that both he that soweth and he that reapeth, maye reioyse together.
4:37For herin is the prouerbe true: One soweth, another reapeth.
4:38I haue sent you to reape that, wheron ye bestowed no laboure. Other haue laboured, and ye are come in to their laboures.
4:39Many Samaritans of the same cite beleued on him, for the sayenge of the woman, which testified: He hath tolde me all that euer I dyd.
4:40Now whan the Samaritans came to him, they besought him, that he wolde tary with them. And he abode there two dayes,
4:41and many mo beleued because of his worde,
4:42and sayde vnto the woman: We beleue now hence forth, not because of thy sayenge, we haue herde him oureselues, and knowe, that this of a trueth is Christ the Sauioure of the worlde.
4:43After two dayes he departed thence, and wente in to Galile.
4:44For Iesus himself testified, that a prophet is nothinge set by at home.
4:45Now wha he came in to Galile, the Galileas receaued him, which had sene all that he dyd at Ierusalem in the feast: for they also were come thither in the feast.
4:46And Iesus came agayne vnto Cana in Galile, where he turned the water vnto wyne. And there was a certayne ruler, whose sonne laye sicke at Capernaum.
4:47This herde that Iesus came out of Iewry in to Galile, and wente vnto him, and besought him, that he wolde come downe, and helpe his sonne, for he laye deed sicke.
4:48And Iesus sayde vnto him: Excepte ye se tokens and wonders, ye beleue not.
4:49The ruler sayde vnto him: Come downe Syr, or euer my childe dye.
4:50Iesus sayde vnto him: Go thy waye, thy sonne lyueth. The man beleued the worde, that Iesus sayde vnto him, and wente his waye.
4:51And as he was goinge downe, his seruauntes mett him, and tolde him, and sayde: Thy childe lyueth.
4:52Then enquyred he of them the houre, wherin he beganne to amende. And they sayde vnto him: Yesterdaye aboute the seueth houre the feuer left him.
4:53Then the father perceaued, that it was aboute the same houre, wherin Iesus sayde vnto him: Thy sonne lyueth. And he beleued with his whole house.
4:54This is now the seconde token that Iesus dyd, whan he came from Iewry in to Galile.
