11:1	Wytodlice sum seoc man wæs ge-nemned lazarus of bethania of marian ceastre & of martham hys swustra.
11:2	hyt wæs syo maria þe smerede drihten; mid þare sealfe. & dreide hys fet mid hyre lockan. Lazarus hyre broðer wæs ge-yfeled.
11:3	hys swustron sænde to hym; & cwæðen. drihten nu ys seoc se þe þu lufæst.
11:4	Ða se hælend þæt ge-hyrde þa cwæð he to heom. Nis þeos untrumnysse nä for deaðe; ac for godes wuldre. þæt godes sunu syo ge-wuldrod þurh hyne.
11:5	Soðlice se hælend lufede martham. & hyre swuster mariam & lazarum heora broðer.
11:6	Witoðlice he wæs twegan dages on þare sylfan stowe. þa he herde þt he seoc wæs.
11:7	Æfter þisum he cwæð to hys leorning-cnihten. uten faren eft to Iudea lande.
11:8	hys leorning-cnihtes cwæðen; to him. Lareow nu þa iudeas sohten þe þæt hyo woldan þe henen. & wilt þu eft faren þider.
11:9	Se hælend heom andswerede. & cwæð. Hu ne synd twelf tida þas dayges. gyf hwa gæð on dayge ne æt-sprincð he. For-þan he ge-seoð þises middan-eardes leoht.
11:10	Gyf he gað on niht heo æt-sprincð for-þan þe leoht nys on hyre.
11:11	Ðas þing he cwæð. & seoððan he cwæð to heom. Lazarus ure freond slæpd. ac ich wille gän & a-wenchen hyne of slæpe.
11:12	Hys leorning-cnihtas cwæðon. Drihtan (sic) gyf he slæpð he byeð hal.
11:13	Se hælend hyt cwæð be hys deaðe. hyo wenden ge-wislice þæt he hyt sægde be swefnes slæpe.
11:14	Ða cwæð se hælend openlice to heom. Lazarus ys dead.
11:15	& ich eom bliðe for eower þingen; þæt ge; ge-lefan. for-þam ic næs naht þær; ac uton gan to hym.
11:16	Ða cwæð thomas to hys ge-feran. uton gän & sweltan mid hym.
11:17	Ða for se hælend & ge-fand; þæt he wæs forð-faren. & for feower dagen be-bereged.
11:18	Bethania ys ge-hende ierusalem ofer fyftena furlenga.
11:19	Manega þare iudea comen to martham & to marian. þæt hyo woldan hyo frefrian for heora broðer þingan.
11:20	Ða martha ge-hyrde þæt se hælend com; þa arn hyo on-gean hym. & maria sæt æt ham.
11:21	Ða cwæð martha to þam hælende. Drihten gyf þu wære her; nære min broðer dead.
11:22	& eac ich wat nuðe. þæt god þe sylð swa hwæt swa þu hyne bydst.
11:23	Ða cwæð se hælend to hire. þin broðer arist.
11:24	Ænd martha cwæð to hym. Ic wat þæt he arist on þan utemesten daige.
11:25	& se hælend cwæð to hyre. ic eom arist & lyf. se þe ge-lyfð on me; þah he dead syo he leofað.
11:26	& ne swelt nan þare þe leofað ænd ge-lefð; on me. Ge-lyfst þu þises;
11:27	hyo cwæð to hym. Witodlice drihten ich ge-lefe; þæt þu ert crist; godes sune. þe on midden-eard come.
11:28	& þa he þas þing saigde. hyo geode digelice & cleopede marie hyre swustor þus cwæðende. her ys ure lareow & clepeð þe.
11:29	Ða hyo þæt ge-hyrde hyo aras raðe. & com to hym.
11:30	þa geot ne com se hælend binnan þam ceastre. ac wæs þa get on þare stowe þe martha him on-gean com.
11:31	Ða iudeas þe wæron mid hyre on huse. & hye frefredon þa hy ge-sægen þæt marie aras & mid efste ut-eode. hyo felgedon hyre þus cwæðende. hyo gað to hys berienne þæt hyo wepe þære.
11:32	Þa maria com þær se hælend wæs. & hyo hine ge-seah; hyo fell to hys foten. & cwæð to hym. Drihten gyf þu wære her; nære min broðer dead.
11:33	Þa se hælend ge-seah þæt hyo weop. & þæt þa iudeas weopen þe mid hire comen. he geomerode on hys gaste & ge-drefde hine selfne.
11:34	ænd cwæð. hwær leigde ge hine. Hyo cwæðon to hym. drihten ga & ge-seoh.
11:35	& se hælend weop.
11:36	& þa iudeas cwæðen. locu nu hu he hine lufede.
11:37	Sume hyo cwæðen. Ne myhte þes þe untynde blindes eagen. don eac þæt þes nære dead.
11:38	Æft se hælend geomerode on hym sylfon. & com to þare berienne. hyt wæs an scræf. & þær wæs an stan on-uppan ge-leid.
11:39	Ænd se hælend cwæð doð aweig þonne stan. Ða cwæð martha to hym. þas swustor þe þær dead wæs. Drihten nu he stincð he wæs feower dagen dead.
11:40	Se hælend cwæð to hyre. ne seide ich þe þæt þu ge-sihst godes wuldor gyf þu ge-lyfst;
11:41	Þa dedon hyo aweig þonne stan. Se hælend a-höf up hys eagen. & cwæð. fader ic do þe þankes. for-þan þu ge-herdast me.
11:42	Ic wat þæt þu me symle ge-hyrst. ac ic cwæð for þam folke. þe here on-buton stent. þæt hyo ge-lefan; þæt þu me sendest.
11:43	Ða he þas þing saigde; he cleopede michelre stefne. Lazarus cum ut.
11:44	& sone stop forð se ðe dead wæs. ge-bundan handan & fotan. & hys neb wæs mid swatline ge-bundan. Ða cwæð se hælend to heom; un-bindeð hyne & læteð hine gan.
11:45	Manega þare iudea þe coman to marian & ge-sægen þa þing þe he dyde ge-lefdon on hyne.
11:46	Hyo sume foren to þam fariseon. & sagdon heom þa þing þe se hælend dyde.
11:47	Wytodlice þa biscoppes & þa farisei ge-gadereden ge-mot. & cwæðen. Hwæt do we for-þan þe þes mann wercð mycel taken.
11:48	Gyf we hyne for-læteð þus ealle ge-lyfað on hine. Ænd romane cymd & nemeð ure land. & ure þeodscype.
11:49	Heora an wæs ge-nemned cayphas. se wæs þa on geare byscop. & cwæð to heom. Ge nyton nan þing.
11:50	ne ge-cnawað ne ne ge-þenceð. þæt us ys betere þæt an man swelte. for folce. & eall þeod ne for-wurðe.
11:51	Ne cwæð he þæt of hym sylfe. Ac þa he wæs þæt gear bischop; he witegode þæt þe se hælend scolde swelten for þare þeode.
11:52	& na synderlice for þare þeode. ac þæt he wolde somnian to-gædere godes folc & godes bearn þe to-drifene wæren.
11:53	Of þam dayge hyo þohten þæt hyo wolden hine of-slean.
11:54	Ða ne for se hælend na openliche onmang þam iudeam. ac for on þæt land wið þæt wæstan. on þa burh þe ys ge-nemned effrem. & wunede þær mid his leorning-cnihtan.
11:55	Iudea eastre wæron ge-hende. & manega foron of þam lande to ierusalem ær þam eastran. þæt hyo wolden hye selfe ge-halegian.
11:56	hyo sohtan þanne hælend & spræce heom be-tweonan þær hye stoden on þam temple; & þus cwæðen. hwæt wene we þæt he ne cume to freols-daige.
11:57	þa biscopes & þa pharisei hafden be-boden gyf hwa wiste hwær he wære þæt he hyt kydde. þæt hyo mihtan hine nymen.


11:1	And a certaine man was sicke, named Lazarus of Bethania, the towne of Marie, and her sister Martha.
11:2	(And it was that Mary which anointed the Lord with oyntment, and wiped his feete with her heare, whose brother Lazarus was sicke.)
11:3	Therefore his sisters sent vnto him, saying, Lord, beholde, he whome thou louest, is sicke.
11:4	When Iesus heard it, he saide, This sickenes is not vnto death, but for the glorie of God, that the Sonne of God might be glorified thereby.
11:5	Nowe Iesus loued Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.
11:6	And after he had heard that he was sicke, yet abode hee two dayes still in the same place where he was.
11:7	Then after that, said he to his disciples, Let vs goe into Iudea againe.
11:8	The disciples saide vnto him, Master, the Iewes lately sought to stone thee, and doest thou goe thither againe?
11:9	Iesus answered, Are there not twelue houres in the day? If a man walke in the day, hee stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
11:10	But if a man walke in the night, hee stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11:11	These things spake he, and after, he said vnto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth: but I goe to wake him vp.
11:12	Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleepe, he shalbe safe.
11:13	Howbeit, Iesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of the naturall sleepe.
11:14	Then saide Iesus vnto them plainely, Lazarus is dead.
11:15	And I am glad for your sakes, that I was not there, that ye may beleeue: but let vs go vnto him.
11:16	Then saide Thomas (which is called Didymus) vnto his felow disciples, Let vs also goe, that we may die with him.
11:17	Then came Iesus, and found that he had lien in the graue foure dayes alreadie.
11:18	(Nowe Bethania was neere vnto Hierusalem, about fifteene furlongs off.)
11:19	And many of ye Iewes were come to Martha and Marie to comfort them for their brother.
11:20	Then Martha, when shee heard that Iesus was comming, went to meete him: but Mary sate still in the house.
11:21	Then said Martha vnto Iesus, Lord, if thou hadst bene here, my brother had not bene dead.
11:22	But now I know also, that whatsoeuer thou askest of God, God will giue it thee.
11:23	Iesus said vnto her, Thy brother shall rise againe.
11:24	Martha said vnto him, I know that he shall rise againe in the resurrection at the last day.
11:25	Iesus saide vnto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that beleeueth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he liue.
11:26	And whosoeuer liueth, and beleeueth in me, shall neuer die: Beleeuest thou this?
11:27	She said vnto him, Yea, Lord, I beleeue that thou art that Christ that Sonne of God, which should come into the world.
11:28	And when she had so saide, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
11:29	And when she heard it, shee arose quickly, and came vnto him.
11:30	For Iesus was not yet come into the towne, but was in the place where Martha met him.
11:31	The Iewes then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they sawe Marie, that she rose vp hastily, and went out, folowed her, saying, She goeth vnto the graue, to weepe there.
11:32	Then when Mary was come where Iesus was, and sawe him, she fell downe at his feete, saying vnto him, Lord, if thou haddest bene here, my brother had not bene dead.
11:33	When Iesus therefore saw her weepe, and the Iewes also weepe which came with her, hee groned in the spirit, and was troubled in himselfe,
11:34	And saide, Where haue ye layde him? They said vnto him, Lord, come and see.
11:35	And Iesus wept.
11:36	Then saide the Iewes, Beholde, how he loued him.
11:37	And some of them saide, Coulde not he, which opened the eyes of the blinde, haue made also, that this man should not haue died?
11:38	Iesus therefore againe groned in himselfe, and came to the graue. And it was a caue, and a stone was layde vpon it.
11:39	Iesus saide, Take ye away the stone. Martha the sister of him that was dead, said vnto him, Lord, he stinketh alreadie: for he hath bene dead foure dayes.
11:40	Iesus saide vnto her, Saide I not vnto thee, that if thou diddest beleeue, thou shouldest see the glorie of God?
11:41	Then they tooke away the stone from the place where the dead was layde. And Iesus lift vp his eyes, and saide, Father, I thanke thee, because thou hast heard me.
11:42	I knowe that thou hearest me alwayes, but because of the people that stand by, I said it, that they may beleeue, that thou hast sent me.
11:43	As hee had spoken these things, hee cried with a loude voyce, Lazarus, come foorth.
11:44	Then he that was dead, came forth, bound hande and foote with bandes, and his face was bound with a napkin. Iesus said vnto them, Loose him, and let him goe.
11:45	Then many of the Iewes, which came to Mary, and had seene the thinges, which Iesus did, beleeued in him.
11:46	But some of them went their way to the Pharises, and told them what things Iesus had done.
11:47	Then gathered the hie Priests, and the Pharises a councill, and said, What shall we doe? For this man doeth many miracles.
11:48	If we let him thus alone, all men will beleeue in him, and the Romanes will come and take away both our place, and the nation.
11:49	Then one of them named Caiaphas, which was the hie Priest that same yere, said vnto them, Ye perceiue nothing at all,
11:50	Nor yet doe you consider that it is expedient for vs, that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
11:51	This spake hee not of himselfe: but being hie Priest that same yere, he prophecied that Iesus should die for that nation:
11:52	And not for that nation onely, but that he shoulde gather together in one the children of God, which were scattered.
11:53	Then from that day foorth they consulted together, to put him to death.
11:54	Iesus therefore walked no more openly among the Iewes, but went thence vnto a countrey neere to the wildernes, into a citie called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
11:55	And the Iewes Passeouer was at hande, and many went out of the countrey vp to Hierusalem before the Passeouer, to purifie themselues.
11:56	Then sought they for Iesus, and spake among themselues, as they stoode in the Temple, What thinke ye, that he cometh not to the feast?
11:57	Now both the high Priestes and the Pharises had giuen a commandement, that if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.


11:1	A certayne man was sicke named Lazarus of Bethania the toune of Mary and her sister Martha.
11:2	It was that Mary which annoynted Iesus with oyntment and wyped his fete with her heere whose brother Lazarus was sicke
11:3	and his sisters sent vnto him sayinge. Lorde behold he whom thou lovest is sicke.
11:4	When Iesus hearde yt he sayd: this infirmite is not vnto deth but for ye laude of God that the sonne of God myght be praysed by the reason of it.
11:5	Iesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
11:6	After he hearde that he was sicke then aboode he two dayes still in the same place where he was.
11:7	Then after that sayd he to his disciples: let us goo into Iewry agayne.
11:8	His disciples sayde vnto him. Master the Iewes lately sought meanes to stone the and wilt thou goo thyther agayne?
11:9	Iesus answered: are ther not twelve houres in ye daye? Yf a man walke in ye daye he stombleth not because he seith the lyght of this worlde.
11:10	But yf a ma walke in ye nyght he stombleth because ther is no lyght in him.
11:11	This sayde he and after yt he sayde vnto the: oure frende Lazarus slepeth but I goo to wake him out of slepe.
11:12	Then sayde his disciples: Lorde yf he slepe he shall do well ynough.
11:13	How be it Iesus spake of his deeth: but they thought yt he had spoke of ye naturall slepe.
11:14	Then sayde Iesus vnto the playnly Lazarus is deed
11:15	and I am glad for youre sakes yt I was not there because ye maye beleve. Neverthelesse let vs go vnto him.
11:16	Then sayde Thomas which is called Dydimus vnto ye disciples: let vs also goo that we maye dye wt him
11:17	Then went Iesus and founde that he had lyne in his grave foure dayes already.
11:18	Bethanie was nye vnto Ierusalem aboute. xv. furlonges of
11:19	and many of the Iewes were come to Martha and Mary to comforte them over their brother.
11:20	Martha assone as she hearde yt Iesus was comynge went and met him: but Mary sate still in the housse.
11:21	Then sayde Martha vnto Iesus: Lorde yf thou haddest bene here my brother had not bene deed:
11:22	but neverthelesse I knowe that whatsoever thou axest of God God will geve it the.
11:23	Iesus sayde vnto her: Thy brother shall ryse agayne.
11:24	Martha sayde vnto him: I knowe that he shall ryse agayne in the resurreccion at the last daye.
11:25	Iesus sayde vnto her: I am the resurreccion and the lyfe: He that beleveth on me ye though he were deed yet shall he lyve.
11:26	And whosoever lyveth and belevest on me shall never dye. Beleveth thou this?
11:27	She sayde vnto him: ye Lorde I beleve that thou arte Christ the sonne of god which shuld come into the worlde.
11:28	And assone as she had so sayde she went her waye and called Marie her sister secretly sayinge: The master is come and calleth for the
11:29	And she assone as she hearde that arose quickly and came vnto him.
11:30	Iesus was not yet come into the toune: but was in the place where Martha met him.
11:31	The Iewes then which were with her in the housse and comforted her when they sawe Mary that she rose vp hastely and went out folowed her saying: She goeth vnto the grave to wepe there.
11:32	Then when Mary was come where Iesus was and sawe him she fell doune at his fete sayinge vnto him: Lorde yf thou haddest bene here my brother had not bene deed.
11:33	When Iesus sawe her wepe and ye Iewes also wepe which came wt her he groned in ye sprete and was troubled in him selfe
11:34	and sayde: Where have ye layed him? They sayde vnto him: Lorde come and se.
11:35	And Iesus wept.
11:36	Then sayde the Iewes: Beholde howe he loved him.
11:37	And some of the sayde: coulde not he which openned the eyes of the blynde have made also that this man shuld not have dyed?
11:38	Iesus agayne groned in him selfe and came to the grave. It was a caue and a stone layde on it.
11:39	And Iesus sayd: take ye awaye the stone. Martha the sister of him that was deed sayd vnto him: Lorde by this tyme he stinketh. For he hath bene deed foure dayes:
11:40	Iesus sayde vnto her: Sayde I not vnto the yt if thou didest beleve thou shuldest se ye glory of God.
11:41	Then they toke awaye ye stone from ye place where the deed was layde. And Iesus lyfte vp his eyes and sayde: Father I thanke the because that thou hast hearde me.
11:42	I wot that thou hearest me all wayes: but because of the people that stonde by I sayde it yt they maye beleve that thou hast sent me.
11:43	And when he thus had spoken he cryed wt a loud voyce. Lazarus come forthe.
11:44	And he that was deed came forth bounde hand and fote with grave bondes and his face was bounde with a napkin. Iesus sayde vnto the: loowse him and let him goo.
11:45	Then many of the Iewes which came to Mary and had sene the thinges which Iesus dyd beleved on him.
11:46	But some of them went their wayes to the Pharises and tolde them what Iesus had done.
11:47	Then gadered the hye prestes and the Pharises a counsell and sayde: what do we? This ma doeth many miracles.
11:48	Yf we let him scape thus all men will beleve on him and ye Romaynes shall come and take awaye oure countre and the people.
11:49	And one of them named Cayphas which was the hieprest yt same yeare sayde vnto them: Ye perceave nothinge at all
11:50	nor yet consider that it is expedient for vs that one man dye for the people and not that all the people perisshe.
11:51	This spake he not of him selfe but beinge hye preste that same yeare he prophesied that Iesus shulde dye for the people
11:52	and not for the people only but that he shuld gader to geder in one the chyldren of God which were scattered abroode.
11:53	From that daye forth they held a counsell to geder for to put him to deeth.
11:54	Iesus therfore walked no more opely amoge the Iewes: but wet his waye thence vnto a coutre nye to a wildernes into a cite called Ephraim and there hauted with his disciples.
11:55	And the Iewes ester was nye at hand and many went out of the countre vp to Ierusalem before the ester to purify them selves.
11:56	Then sought they for Iesus and spake bitwene the selves as they stode in the teple: What thinke ye seynge he cometh not to the feast.
11:57	The hye prestes and Pharises had geven a comaundemet that yf eny man knew where he were he shuld shewe it that they myght take him.
