11:10Jhesus answerde, Whether ther ben not twelue ouris of the dai? If ony man wandre in the dai, he hirtith not, for he seeth the liyt of this world.
11:11But if he wandre in the niyt, he stomblith, for liyt is not in him.
11:12He seith these thingis, and aftir these thingis he seith to hem, Lazarus, oure freend, slepith, but Y go to reise hym fro sleep.
11:13Therfor hise disciplis seiden, Lord, if he slepith, he schal be saaf.
11:14But Jhesus hadde seid of his deth; but thei gessiden, that he seide of slepyng of sleep.
11:15Thanne therfor Jhesus seide to hem opynli, Lazarus is deed;
11:16and Y haue ioye for you, that ye bileue, for Y was not there; but go we to hym.
11:17Therfor Thomas, that is seid Didymus, seide to euen disciplis, Go we also, that we dien with hym.

11:19And Bethany was bisidis Jerusalem, as it were fiftene furlongis.
11:20And many of the Jewis camen to Mary and Martha, to coumforte hem of her brothir.
11:21Therfor as Martha herde, that Jhesu cam, sche ran to hym; but Mary sat at home.
11:22Therfor Martha seide to Jhesu, Lord, if thou haddist be here, my brother hadde not be deed.
11:23But now Y woot, that what euere thingis thou schalt axe of God, God schal yyue to thee.
11:24Jhesus seith to hir, Thi brother schal rise ayen.
11:25Martha seith to hym, Y woot, that he schal rise ayen in the ayen risyng in the laste dai.
11:26Jhesus seith to hir, Y am ayen risyng and lijf; he that bileueth in me, yhe, thouy he be deed,

11:28Sche seith to hym, Yhe, Lord, Y haue bileued, that thou art Crist, the sone of the lyuynge God, that hast come in to this world.

11:30Sche, as sche herd, aroos anoon, and cam to hym.
11:31And Jhesus cam not yit `in to the castel, but he was yit in that place, where Martha hadde comun ayens hym.
11:32Therfor the Jewis that weren with hir in the hous, and coumfortiden hir, whanne thei sayn Marie, that sche roos swithe, and wente out, thei sueden hir, and seiden, For sche goith to the graue, to wepe there.
11:33But whanne Marie was comun where Jhesus was, sche seynge hym felde doun to his feet, and seide to hym, Lord, if thou haddist be here, my brother hadde not be deed.
11:34And therfor whanne Jhesu saiy hir wepyng, and the Jewis wepynge that weren with hir, he `made noise in spirit, and troblide hym silf,
11:35and seide, Where han ye leid hym? Thei seien to hym, Lord, come, and se.
11:36And Jhesus wepte. Therfor the Jewis seiden,
11:37Lo! hou he louede hym.
11:38And summe of hem seiden, Whethir this man that openyde the iyen of the borun blynde man, myyte not make that this schulde not die?
11:39Therfor Jhesus eft makynge noise in hym silf, cam to the graue. And there was a denne, and a stoon was leid theronne.
11:40And Jhesus seith, Take ye awey the stoon. Martha, the sistir of hym that was deed, seith to hym, Lord, he stynkith now, for he hath leye foure daies.
11:41Jhesus seith to hir, Haue Y not seid to thee, that if thou bileuest, thou schalt se the glorie of God?
11:42Therfor thei token awei the stoon. And Jhesus lifte vp hise iyen, and seide, Fadir, Y do thankyngis to thee, for thou hast herd me; and Y wiste,
11:43that thou euermore herist me, but for the puple that stondith aboute, Y seide, that thei bileue, that thou hast sent me.
11:44Whanne he hadde seid these thingis, he criede with a greet vois, Lazarus, come thou forth.
11:45And anoon he that was deed, cam out, boundun the hondis and feet with boondis, and his face boundun with a sudarie. And Jhesus seith to hem, Vnbynde ye hym, and suffre ye hym to go forth.
11:46Therfor many of the Jewis that camen to Marie and Martha, and seyn what thingis Jhesus dide, bileueden in hym.
11:47But summe of hem wente to the Farisees, and seiden to hem, what thingis Jhesus `hadde don.
11:48Therfor the bischopis and the Farisees gadriden a counsel ayens Jhesu, and seiden, What do we? for this man doith many myraclis.
11:49If we leeue hym thus, alle men schulen bileue in hym; and Romayns schulen come, and schulen take our place and oure folk.
11:50But oon of hem, Cayfas bi name, whanne he was bischop of that yeer, seide to hem,
11:51Ye witen nothing, ne thenken, that it spedith to you, that o man die for the puple, and that al the folc perische not.
11:52But he seide not this thing of hym silf, but whanne he was bischop of that yeer, he prophesiede, that Jhesu was to die for the folc,
11:53and not oneli for the folc, but that he schulde gadere in to oon the sones of God that weren scaterid.
11:54Therfor fro that day thei souyten for to sle hym.
11:55Therfor Jhesus walkide not thanne opynli among the Jewis; but he wente in to a cuntre bisidis desert, in to a citee, that is seid Effren, and there he dwellide with hise disciplis.
11:56And the pask of the Jewis was niy, and many of the cuntrey wenten vp to Jerusalem bifor the pask, to halewe hem silf.
11:57Therfor thei souyten Jhesu, and spaken togidere, stondynge in the temple, What gessen ye, for he cometh not to the feeste day? For the bischopis and Farisees hadden youun a maundement, that if ony man knowe where he is, that he schewe, that thei take hym.

11:1A certayne man was sicke named Lazarus of Bethania the toune of Mary and her sister Martha.
11:2It was that Mary which annoynted Iesus with oyntment and wyped his fete with her heere whose brother Lazarus was sicke
11:3and his sisters sent vnto him sayinge. Lorde behold he whom thou lovest is sicke.
11:4When Iesus hearde yt he sayd: this infirmite is not vnto deth but for ye laude of God that the sonne of God myght be praysed by the reason of it.
11:5Iesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
11:6After he hearde that he was sicke then aboode he two dayes still in the same place where he was.
11:7Then after that sayd he to his disciples: let us goo into Iewry agayne.
11:8His disciples sayde vnto him. Master the Iewes lately sought meanes to stone the and wilt thou goo thyther agayne?
11:9Iesus answered: are ther not twelve houres in ye daye? Yf a man walke in ye daye he stombleth not because he seith the lyght of this worlde.
11:10But yf a ma walke in ye nyght he stombleth because ther is no lyght in him.
11:11This sayde he and after yt he sayde vnto the: oure frende Lazarus slepeth but I goo to wake him out of slepe.
11:12Then sayde his disciples: Lorde yf he slepe he shall do well ynough.
11:13How be it Iesus spake of his deeth: but they thought yt he had spoke of ye naturall slepe.
11:14Then sayde Iesus vnto the playnly Lazarus is deed
11:15and I am glad for youre sakes yt I was not there because ye maye beleve. Neverthelesse let vs go vnto him.
11:16Then sayde Thomas which is called Dydimus vnto ye disciples: let vs also goo that we maye dye wt him
11:17Then went Iesus and founde that he had lyne in his grave foure dayes already.
11:18Bethanie was nye vnto Ierusalem aboute. xv. furlonges of
11:19and many of the Iewes were come to Martha and Mary to comforte them over their brother.
11:20Martha assone as she hearde yt Iesus was comynge went and met him: but Mary sate still in the housse.
11:21Then sayde Martha vnto Iesus: Lorde yf thou haddest bene here my brother had not bene deed:
11:22but neverthelesse I knowe that whatsoever thou axest of God God will geve it the.
11:23Iesus sayde vnto her: Thy brother shall ryse agayne.
11:24Martha sayde vnto him: I knowe that he shall ryse agayne in the resurreccion at the last daye.
11:25Iesus sayde vnto her: I am the resurreccion and the lyfe: He that beleveth on me ye though he were deed yet shall he lyve.
11:26And whosoever lyveth and belevest on me shall never dye. Beleveth thou this?
11:27She sayde vnto him: ye Lorde I beleve that thou arte Christ the sonne of god which shuld come into the worlde.
11:28And assone as she had so sayde she went her waye and called Marie her sister secretly sayinge: The master is come and calleth for the
11:29And she assone as she hearde that arose quickly and came vnto him.
11:30Iesus was not yet come into the toune: but was in the place where Martha met him.
11:31The Iewes then which were with her in the housse and comforted her when they sawe Mary that she rose vp hastely and went out folowed her saying: She goeth vnto the grave to wepe there.
11:32Then when Mary was come where Iesus was and sawe him she fell doune at his fete sayinge vnto him: Lorde yf thou haddest bene here my brother had not bene deed.
11:33When Iesus sawe her wepe and ye Iewes also wepe which came wt her he groned in ye sprete and was troubled in him selfe
11:34and sayde: Where have ye layed him? They sayde vnto him: Lorde come and se.
11:35And Iesus wept.
11:36Then sayde the Iewes: Beholde howe he loved him.
11:37And some of the sayde: coulde not he which openned the eyes of the blynde have made also that this man shuld not have dyed?
11:38Iesus agayne groned in him selfe and came to the grave. It was a caue and a stone layde on it.
11:39And Iesus sayd: take ye awaye the stone. Martha the sister of him that was deed sayd vnto him: Lorde by this tyme he stinketh. For he hath bene deed foure dayes:
11:40Iesus sayde vnto her: Sayde I not vnto the yt if thou didest beleve thou shuldest se ye glory of God.
11:41Then they toke awaye ye stone from ye place where the deed was layde. And Iesus lyfte vp his eyes and sayde: Father I thanke the because that thou hast hearde me.
11:42I wot that thou hearest me all wayes: but because of the people that stonde by I sayde it yt they maye beleve that thou hast sent me.
11:43And when he thus had spoken he cryed wt a loud voyce. Lazarus come forthe.
11:44And he that was deed came forth bounde hand and fote with grave bondes and his face was bounde with a napkin. Iesus sayde vnto the: loowse him and let him goo.
11:45Then many of the Iewes which came to Mary and had sene the thinges which Iesus dyd beleved on him.
11:46But some of them went their wayes to the Pharises and tolde them what Iesus had done.
11:47Then gadered the hye prestes and the Pharises a counsell and sayde: what do we? This ma doeth many miracles.
11:48Yf we let him scape thus all men will beleve on him and ye Romaynes shall come and take awaye oure countre and the people.
11:49And one of them named Cayphas which was the hieprest yt same yeare sayde vnto them: Ye perceave nothinge at all
11:50nor yet consider that it is expedient for vs that one man dye for the people and not that all the people perisshe.
11:51This spake he not of him selfe but beinge hye preste that same yeare he prophesied that Iesus shulde dye for the people
11:52and not for the people only but that he shuld gader to geder in one the chyldren of God which were scattered abroode.
11:53From that daye forth they held a counsell to geder for to put him to deeth.
11:54Iesus therfore walked no more opely amoge the Iewes: but wet his waye thence vnto a coutre nye to a wildernes into a cite called Ephraim and there hauted with his disciples.
11:55And the Iewes ester was nye at hand and many went out of the countre vp to Ierusalem before the ester to purify them selves.
11:56Then sought they for Iesus and spake bitwene the selves as they stode in the teple: What thinke ye seynge he cometh not to the feast.
11:57The hye prestes and Pharises had geven a comaundemet that yf eny man knew where he were he shuld shewe it that they myght take him.

11:1There laye one sicke, named Lazarus of Bethania, in ye towne of Mary & hir sister Martha.
11:2It was yt Mary which anoynted ye LORDE wt oyntment, & dryed his fete wt hir heer, whose brother Lazarus laye sicke.)
11:3The sent his sisters vnto hi, & sayde: LORDE, beholde, he who thou louest lyeth sicke.
11:4Wha Iesus herde that, he sayde: This sicknesse is not vnto death, but for the prayse of God, yt the sonne of God maye be praysed there thorow.
11:5Iesus loued Martha & hir sister, & Lazarus.
11:6Now wha he herde that he was sicke, he abode two dayes in ye place where he was.
11:7Afterwarde sayde he vnto his disciples: Let vs go agayne i to Iewry.
11:8His disciples sayde vnto him: Master, lately wolde the Iewes haue stoned the, & wilt thou go thither agayne:
11:9Iesus answered: Are there not twolue houres in ye daye? He yt walketh in the daye, stombleth not, for he seyeth ye light of this worlde.
11:10But he that walketh in the night, stobleth: for there is no light in him.
11:11This he spake, & after warde sayde he vnto the: Lazarus or frende slepeth, but I go to wake him out of slepe.
11:12The sayde his disciples: LORDE, yf he slepe, he shal do well ynough
11:13(Howbeyt Iesus spake of his death but they thought yt he had spoke of ye bodely slepe.)
11:14The sayde Iesus vnto the planely: Lazarus is deed,
11:15& I am glad for yor sakes, yt I was not there, that ye maye beleue. Neuertheles let vs go vnto hi.
11:16The sayde Thomas (which is called Didimus) vnto ye disciples: Let vs go also, yt we maye dye wt hi.
11:17The came Iesus, & founde yt he had lyen in ye graue foure dayes allready.
11:18Bethanye was nye vnto Ierusale, aboute fiftene furloges.
11:19And many of the Iewes were come to Martha & Mary, to coforte the ouer their brother.
11:20Now wha Martha herde yt Iesus came, she wete to mete him. But Mary satt styl at home.
11:21The sayde Martha vnto Iesus: LORDE, yf thou haddest bene here, my brother had not bene deed.
11:22But neuertheles I knowe also, what soeuer thou axest of God, that God wyl geue it the.
11:23Iesus sayde vnto her: Thy brother shal ryse agayne.
11:24Martha sayde vnto hi: I knowe, yt he shal ryse agayne in the resurreccion at ye last daye.
11:25Iesus saide vnto her: I am the resurreccion & the life He yt beleueth on me, shal lyue, though he were deed allready:
11:26& whosoeuer lyueth and beleueth on me, shal neuer dye. Beleuest thou this?
11:27She saide vnto him: Yee LORDE, I beleue, that thou art Christ the sonne of God, which shulde come into the worlde.
11:28And wha she had sayde this, she wete hir waye, & called Mary hir sister secretly, & saide: The maister is come, & calleth for the.
11:29She whan she herde that, rose vp quyckly, and came vnto him:
11:30For Iesus was not yet come in to ye towne, but was yet in the place, where Martha met him.
11:31The Iewes that were wt her in the house and comforted her, whan they sawe Mary, that she rose vp haistely, & wente out, they folowed her, & saide: She goeth to the graue, to wepe there.
11:32Now wha Mary came where Iesus was & sawe him, she fell downe at his fete, & sayde vnto hi: LORDE, yf thou haddest bene here, my brother had not bene deed.
11:33Wha Iesus sawe her wepe, & the Iewes wepinge also yt came wt her, he groned in the sprete, & was sory wt in himself,
11:34& sayde: Where haue ye layed him? They sayde: LORDE come, & se it.
11:35And Iesus wepte.
11:36Then sayde ye Iewes: Beholde how he loued him.
11:37But some of the saide: Coulde no the which opened the eyes of ye blynde, haue made also, that this ma shulde not haue dyed?
11:38But Iesus groned agayne in himself, and came to the graue. It was a caue, and a stone layed on it.
11:39Iesus saide: Take awaye ye stone. Martha the sister of him yt was deed, saide vnto hi: LORDE, he stynketh allready, for he hath bene deed foure dayes.
11:40Iesus sayde vnto her: Sayde I not vnto the, that yf thou dyddest beleue, thou shuldest se the glory of God?
11:41Then toke they awaye the stone, where the deed laye. Iesus lift vp his eyes, and sayde: Father, I thake ye, that thou hast herde me.
11:42Howbeit I knowe, that thou hearest me allwaye: but because of ye people that stonde by, I sayde it, that they maye beleue, that thou hast sent me.
11:43Whan he had sayde this, he cryed loude: Lazarus come forth.
11:44And ye deed came forth bounde hande & fote wt graue clothes, & his face bounde wt a napkyn. Iesus sayde vnto the: Lowse him, & let him go.
11:45Many now of ye Iewes which mere come vnto Mary, and sawe what Iesus dyd, beleued on him.
11:46But some of the wente their waye vnto the pharises, and tolde the what Iesus had done.
11:47Then the hye prestes, and the pharises gathered a councell, and sayde: What do we? This man doth many tokens.
11:48Yf we let him go thus, all me wyl beleue in him: the shal the Romaynes come, and take awaye oure londe and people.
11:49But one of them, named Caiphas, which was hye prest that same yeare, sayde vnto them: Ye knowe nothinge nether considre ye eny thinge at all.
11:50It is better for us that one ma dye for the people, then that all the people shulde perishe.
11:51This spake he not of himself, but for so moch as he was hye prest of the same yeare, he prophecied. For Iesus was for to dye for the people,
11:52and not for the people onely, but that he shulde gather together the children of God, which were scatered abrode:
11:53From that daye forth they toke coucell, how they might put him to death.
11:54Iesus walked nomore openly amonge the Iewes, but wente from thence in to a countre by the wyldernesse, to a cite called Ephraim, & there had he his beynge with his disciples.
11:55The Iewes Easter was nye at hande. And there wente vp many to Ierusale out of that countre before ye Easter, to purifye them selues.
11:56Then stode they vp, and axed after Iesus, and spake amonge them selues in the temple: What thynke ye, that he cometh not to ye feast?
11:57The hye prestes & pharises had geuen a commaundement, that yf eny man knewe where he were, he shulde shewe it, that they might take him.
