John - Chapter: 11

>
11:1And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister --
11:2and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing --
11:3therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;'
11:4and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'
11:5And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,
11:6when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,
11:7then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;'
11:8the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!'
11:9Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;
11:10and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.'
11:11These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;'
11:12therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;'
11:13but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.
11:14Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;
11:15and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;'
11:16therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go -- we also, that we may die with him,'
11:17Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.
11:18And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,
11:19and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;
11:20Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.
11:21Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
11:22but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;'
11:23Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.'
11:24Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;'
11:25Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;
11:26and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die -- to the age;
11:27believest thou this?' she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.'
11:28And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;'
11:29she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;
11:30and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;
11:31the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying -- `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.'
11:32Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;'
11:33Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,
11:34`Where have ye laid him?' they say to him, `Sir, come and see;'
11:35Jesus wept.
11:36The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!'
11:37and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?'
11:38Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,
11:39Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;' the sister of him who hath died -- Martha -- saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;'
11:40Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?'
11:41They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;
11:42and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said `it', that they may believe that Thou didst send me.'
11:43And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;'
11:44and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.'
11:45Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;
11:46but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;
11:47the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?
11:48if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.'
11:49and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,
11:50nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.'
11:51And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,
11:52and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.
11:53From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;
11:54Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.
11:55And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;
11:56they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you -- that he may not come to the feast?'
11:57and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew `it', so that they may seize him.

11:1Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
11:2(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
11:3Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
11:4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
11:6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
11:7Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
11:8His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
11:9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
11:10But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11:11These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
11:12Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
11:13Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
11:14Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
11:15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
11:16Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
11:17Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
11:18Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
11:19And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
11:20Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
11:21Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
11:22But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
11:23Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
11:24Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
11:25Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
11:26And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
11:27She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
11:28And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
11:29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
11:30Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
11:31The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
11:32Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
11:33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
11:34And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
11:35Jesus wept.
11:36Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
11:37And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
11:38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
11:39Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
11:40Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
11:41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
11:42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
11:43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
11:44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
11:45Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
11:46But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
11:47Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
11:48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
11:49And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
11:50Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
11:51And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
11:52And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
11:53Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
11:54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
11:55And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
11:56Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
11:57Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

11:1And there was a certain sick one, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
11:2And it was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
11:3Then the sisters sent to Him, saying, Lord, behold, the one whom You love is sick.
11:4And hearing, Jesus said, This is not sickness to death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God be glorified by it.
11:5And Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
11:6Therefore, when He heard that he is sick, then, indeed, He remained in the place where He was two days.
11:7Then after this He said to the disciples, Let us go to Judea again.
11:8The disciples said to Him, Rabbi, just now the Jews were seeking to stone You, and do You go there again?
11:9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of the world.
11:10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in him.
11:11He said these things. And after this, He said to them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going that I may awaken him.
11:12Then His disciples said, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.
11:13But Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that He spoke of the sleep of slumber.
11:14Therefore, then Jesus said to them plainly, Lazarus has died.
11:15And I rejoice because of you, in order that you may believe that I was not there. But let us go to him.
11:16Then Thomas, he having been called Twin, said to the fellow disciples, Let us go, even we, that we may die with Him.
11:17Then coming, Jesus found him already being held in the tomb four days.
11:18And Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off.
11:19And many of the Jews had come to those around Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother.
11:20Then when Martha heard that Jesus is coming, she met Him; but Mary was sitting in the house.
11:21Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if You were here, my brother would not be dead.
11:22But even now I know that whatever You may ask God, God will give You.
11:23Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again.
11:24Martha said to Him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.
11:25Jesus said to her, I am the Resurrection and the Life. The one believing into Me, though he die, he shall live.
11:26And everyone living and believing into Me shall not ever die forever. Do you believe this?
11:27She said to Him, Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God who comes into the world.
11:28And saying these things, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The Teacher is here and calls you.
11:29That one, when she heard, rose up quickly and came to Him.
11:30And Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met Him.
11:31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, seeing that Mary quickly rose up and went out, they followed her, saying, She is going to the tomb so that she may weep there.
11:32Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was, seeing Him, she fell at His feet, saying to Him, Lord, if You were here, my brother would not have died.
11:33Then when He saw her weeping, and the Jews who came down with her weeping, Jesus groaned in the spirit and troubled Himself.
11:34And He said, Where have you put him? They said to Him, Lord, come and see.
11:35Jesus wept.
11:36Then the Jews said, See how He loved him!
11:37But some of them said, Was this One, the one opening the eyes of the blind, not able to have caused that this one should not die?
11:38Then groaning again within Himself, Jesus came to the tomb. And it was a cave, and a stone was lying on it.
11:39Jesus said, Lift the stone. Martha, the sister of the one that had died, said to Him, Lord, he already smells, for it is the fourth day .
11:40Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you would believe you will see the glory of God?
11:41Then they lifted the stone where the dead one was laid. And Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, Father, I thank You that You heard Me.
11:42And I know that you always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing around, I said it , that they might believe that You sent Me.
11:43And saying these things, He cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus! Here! Outside!
11:44And the one who had died came out, the feet and the hands having been bound with sheets, and his face being bound with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Loosen him and let him go.
11:45Then many of the Jews, those coming to Mary, and having seen what Jesus did, believed into Him.
11:46But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
11:47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled a sanhedrin, and said, What are we doing, for this man does many miracles?
11:48If we let him alone this way, all will believe into him, and the Romans will come and will take away from us both the place and the nation.
11:49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas being high priest of that year, said to them, You know nothing,
11:50nor consider that it is profitable for us that one man die for the people, and not all the nation to perish.
11:51But he did not say this from himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die on behalf of the nation,
11:52and not only on behalf of the nation, but that He also might gather into one the children of God who had been scattered.
11:53Then from that day, they took counsel that they might kill Him.
11:54Then Jesus no longer walked publicly among the Jews, but went away from there into the country near a deserted place , to a city being called Ephraim, and stayed there with His disciples.
11:55And the Passover of the Jews was near. And many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover, that they might purify themselves.
11:56Then they sought Jesus, and said with one another, standing in the temple, What does it seem to you? That He does not at all come to the Feast?
11:57And all the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commands that if anyone knew where He is, he should inform so that they might seize Him.
