John - Chapter: 18

>
18:1These things having said, Jesus went forth with his disciples beyond the brook of Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples,
18:2and Judas also, who delivered him up, had known the place, because many times did Jesus assemble there with his disciples.
18:3Judas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons;
18:4Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, `Whom do ye seek?'
18:5they answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;' Jesus saith to them, `I am `he';' -- and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them; --
18:6when, therefore, he said to them -- `I am `he',' they went away backward, and fell to the ground.
18:7Again, therefore, he questioned them, `Whom do ye seek?' and they said, `Jesus the Nazarene;'
18:8Jesus answered, `I said to you that I am `he'; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;'
18:9that the word might be fulfilled that he said -- `Those whom Thou hast given to me, I did not lose of them even one.'
18:10Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the chief priest's servant, and cut off his right ear -- and the name of the servant was Malchus --
18:11Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, `Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father hath given to me, may I not drink it?'
18:12The band, therefore, and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took hold on Jesus, and bound him,
18:13and they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year,
18:14and Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people.
18:15And following Jesus was Simon Peter, and the other disciple, and that disciple was known to the chief priest, and he entered with Jesus to the hall of the chief priest,
18:16and Peter was standing at the door without, therefore went forth the other disciple who was known to the chief priest, and he spake to the female keeping the door, and he brought in Peter.
18:17Then said the maid keeping the door to Peter, `Art thou also of the disciples of this man?' he saith, `I am not;'
18:18and the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, and warming himself.
18:19The chief priests, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his teaching;
18:20Jesus answered him, `I spake freely to the world, I did always teach in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews do always come together; and in secret I spake nothing;
18:21why me dost thou question? question those having heard what I spake to them; lo, these have known what I said.'
18:22And he having said these things, one of the officers standing by did give Jesus a slap, saying, `Thus dost thou answer the chief priest?'
18:23Jesus answered him, `If I spake ill, testify concerning the ill; and if well, why me dost thou smite?'
18:24Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest.
18:25And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said then to him, `Art thou also of his disciples?' he denied, and said, `I am not.'
18:26One of the servants of the chief priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, `Did not I see thee in the garden with him?'
18:27again, therefore, Peter denied, and immediately a cock crew.
18:28They led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover;
18:29Pilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, `What accusation do ye bring against this man?'
18:30they answered and said to him, `If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.'
18:31Pilate, therefore, said to them, `Take ye him -- ye -- and according to your law judge him;' the Jews, therefore, said to him, `It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;'
18:32that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.
18:33Pilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, `Thou art the King of the Jews?'
18:34Jesus answered him, `From thyself dost thou say this? or did others say it to thee about me?'
18:35Pilate answered, `Am I a Jew? thy nation, and the chief priests did deliver thee up to me; what didst thou?'
18:36Jesus answered, `My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my officers had struggled that I might not be delivered up to Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.'
18:37Pilate, therefore, said to him, `Art thou then a king?' Jesus answered, `Thou dost say `it'; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.'
18:38Pilate saith to him, `What is truth?' and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, `I do find no fault in him;
18:39and ye have a custom that I shall release to you one in the passover; will ye, therefore, `that' I shall release to you the king of the Jews?'
18:40therefore they all cried out again, saying, `Not this one -- but Barabbas;' and Barabbas was a robber.

18:1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.
18:2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
18:3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
18:5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
18:6As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
18:7Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
18:8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:
18:9That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
18:10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
18:11Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
18:12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
18:13And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
18:14Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
18:15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
18:16But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
18:17Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
18:18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
18:19The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
18:20Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
18:21Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.
18:22And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
18:23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
18:24Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
18:25And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
18:26One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
18:27Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
18:28Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
18:29Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
18:30They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
18:31Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
18:32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
18:33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
18:34Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
18:35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
18:36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
18:37Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
18:38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
18:39But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
18:40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

18:1Having said these things, Jesus went out with His disciples across the winter stream Kidron, where there was a garden into which He and His disciples entered.
18:2And Judas, the one betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus many times assembled there with His disciples.
18:3Then receiving a cohort and under-officers from among the chief priests and the Pharisees, Judas came there with torches and lamps and weapons.
18:4Then knowing all the things coming upon Him, going forth, Jesus said to them, Whom do you seek?
18:5They answered Him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said to them, I AM! And Judas, the one betraying Him, also stood with them.
18:6Then when He said to them, I AM, they departed into the rear and fell to the ground.
18:7Then again He asked, Whom do you seek? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.
18:8Jesus answered, I told you that I AM; then if you seek Me, allow these to depart,
18:9(that the Word might be fulfilled which He said, " Of those whom You gave to Me, I lost not one of them)."
18:10Then having a sword, Simon Peter drew it and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. And the slave's name was Malchus.
18:11Then Jesus said to Peter, Put your sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not at all drink it?
18:12Then the cohort, even the commander and the under-officers of the Jews together, seized Jesus and bound Him.
18:13And they led Him away first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest of that year.
18:14And Caiaphas was the one who had given counsel to the Jews that it was advantageous for one man to perish for the people.
18:15And Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus, and that disciple was known to the high priest and entered together with Jesus into the court of the high priest,
18:16but Peter stood at the door outside. The other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
18:17Then the slave woman, the doorkeeper, said to Peter, Are you not also of the disciples of this man? That one said, I am not.
18:18Now the slaves and the under-officers were standing and warming themselves , having made a fire of coals, for it was cold; and Peter was with them, standing and warming himself .
18:19Then the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His doctrine.
18:20Jesus answered him, I publicly spoke to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple where the Jews always come together, and I spoke nothing in secret.
18:21Why do you question Me? Question those hearing what I spoke to them: behold, these know what I said!
18:22But on His having said these things, one of the under-officers standing by gave Jesus a blow with the palm, saying, Do you answer the high priest this way?
18:23Jesus answered him, If I spoke evilly, bear witness concerning the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?
18:24Then having bound Him , Annas sent Him forth to Caiaphas the high priest.
18:25And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself . Then they said to him, Are you not also of His disciples? He denied and said, I am not.
18:26One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did I not see you in the garden with Him?
18:27Then again Peter denied, and immediately a cock crowed.
18:28Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium, and it was early. And they did not enter into the praetorium that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.
18:29Then Pilate went out to them and said, What accusation do you bring against this man?
18:30They answered and said to him, If this one were not an evildoer, then we would not have delivered him to you.
18:31Then Pilate said to them, You take him and judge him according to your own Law. Then the Jews said to him, It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,
18:32(that the word of Jesus which He said might be fulfilled, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die).
18:33Then Pilate again went into the praetorium and called Jesus, and said to Him, Are you the king of the Jews?
18:34Jesus answered him, Do you say this from yourself, or did others tell you about Me?
18:35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your nation, even the chief priests, delivered you up to me! What did you do?
18:36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would have fought that I might not be delivered up to the Jews. But now My kingdom is not from here.
18:37Then Pilate said to Him, Are you really a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I might witness to the Truth. Everyone being of the Truth hears My voice.
18:38Pilate said to Him, What is truth? And saying this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, I do not find even one crime in him!
18:39But there is a common custom to you that I should release one prisoner to you at the Passover. Then you decide: should I release the king of the Jews to you?
18:40Then all cried out again, saying, Not this one, but Barabbas! But Barabbas was a robber.
