| 19:1 | Then, therefore, did Pilate take Jesus and scourge `him', |
| 19:2 | and the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns, did place `it' on his head, and a purple garment they put around him, |
| 19:3 | and said, `Hail! the king of the Jews;' and they were giving him slaps. |
| 19:4 | Pilate, therefore, again went forth without, and saith to them, `Lo, I do bring him to you without, that ye may know that in him I find no fault;' |
| 19:5 | Jesus, therefore, came forth without, bearing the thorny crown and the purple garment; and he saith to them, `Lo, the man!' |
| 19:6 | When, therefore, the chief priests and the officers did see him, they cried out, saying, `Crucify, crucify;' Pilate saith to them, `Take ye him -- ye, and crucify; for I find no fault in him;' |
| 19:7 | the Jews answered him, `We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, for he made himself Son of God.' |
| 19:8 | When, therefore, Pilate heard this word, he was the more afraid, |
| 19:9 | and entered again to the praetorium, and saith to Jesus, `Whence art thou?' and Jesus gave him no answer. |
| 19:10 | Pilate, therefore, saith to him, `To me dost thou not speak? hast thou not known that I have authority to crucify thee, and I have authority to release thee?' |
| 19:11 | Jesus answered, `Thou wouldst have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.' |
| 19:12 | From this `time' was Pilate seeking to release him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, `If this one thou mayest release, thou art not a friend of Caesar; every one making himself a king, doth speak against Caesar.' |
| 19:13 | Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus without -- and he sat down upon the tribunal -- to a place called, `Pavement,' and in Hebrew, Gabbatha; |
| 19:14 | and it was the preparation of the passover, and as it were the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews, `Lo, your king!' |
| 19:15 | and they cried out, `Take away, take away, crucify him;' Pilate saith to them, `Your king shall I crucify?' the chief priests answered, `We have no king except Caesar.' |
| 19:16 | Then, therefore, he delivered him up to them, that he may be crucified, and they took Jesus and led `him' away, |
| 19:17 | and bearing his cross, he went forth to the place called `Place' of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha; |
| 19:18 | where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side, and on that side, and Jesus in the midst. |
| 19:19 | And Pilate also wrote a title, and put `it' on the cross, and it was written, `Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews;' |
| 19:20 | this title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because the place was nigh to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman. |
| 19:21 | The chief priests of the Jews said, therefore, to Pilate, `Write not -- The king of the Jews, but that one said, I am king of the Jews;' |
| 19:22 | Pilate answered, `What I have written, I have written.' |
| 19:23 | The soldiers, therefore, when they did crucify Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, also the coat, and the coat was seamless, from the top woven throughout, |
| 19:24 | they said, therefore, to one another, `We may not rend it, but cast a lot for it, whose it shall be;' that the Writing might be fulfilled, that is saying, `They divided my garments to themselves, and upon my raiment they did cast a lot;' the soldiers, therefore, indeed, did these things. |
| 19:25 | And there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleopas, and Mary the Magdalene; |
| 19:26 | Jesus, therefore, having seen `his' mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he was loving, he saith to his mother, `Woman, lo, thy son;' |
| 19:27 | afterward he saith to the disciple, `Lo, thy mother;' and from that hour the disciple took her to his own `home'. |
| 19:28 | After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, saith, `I thirst;' |
| 19:29 | a vessel, therefore, was placed full of vinegar, and they having filled a sponge with vinegar, and having put `it' around a hyssop stalk, did put `it' to his mouth; |
| 19:30 | when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, `It hath been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit. |
| 19:31 | The Jews, therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, since it was the preparation, (for that sabbath day was a great one,) asked of Pilate that their legs may be broken, and they taken away. |
| 19:32 | The soldiers, therefore, came, and of the first indeed they did break the legs, and of the other who was crucified with him, |
| 19:33 | and having come to Jesus, when they saw him already having been dead, they did not break his legs; |
| 19:34 | but one of the soldiers with a spear did pierce his side, and immediately there came forth blood and water; |
| 19:35 | and he who hath seen hath testified, and his testimony is true, and that one hath known that true things he speaketh, that ye also may believe. |
| 19:36 | For these things came to pass, that the Writing may be fulfilled, `A bone of him shall not be broken;' |
| 19:37 | and again another Writing saith, `They shall look to him whom they did pierce.' |
| 19:38 | And after these things did Joseph of Arimathea -- being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed, through the fear of the Jews -- ask of Pilate, that he may take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave leave; he came, therefore, and took away the body of Jesus, |
| 19:39 | and Nicodemus also came -- who came unto Jesus by night at the first -- bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, as it were, a hundred pounds. |
| 19:40 | They took, therefore, the body of Jesus, and bound it with linen clothes with the spices, according as it was the custom of the Jews to prepare for burial; |
| 19:41 | and there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one was yet laid; |
| 19:42 | there, therefore, because of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was nigh, they laid Jesus. |
| 19:1 | Then Pylate toke Iesus and scourged him. |
| 19:2 | And ye soudiers wounde a croune of thornes and put it on his heed. And they dyd on him a purple garment |
| 19:3 | and sayd: hayll kynge of the Iewes: and they smote him on the face. |
| 19:4 | Pylate went forthe agayne and sayde vnto them: beholde I bringe him forth to you that ye maye knowe that I fynde no faute in him. |
| 19:5 | Then came Iesus forthe wearynge a croune of thorne and a robe of purple. And Pylate sayd vnto them: beholde ye man. |
| 19:6 | When the hye Prestes and ministres sawe him they cryed sayinge: crucify him crucify him. Pylate sayde vnto them. Take ye him and crucify him: for I fynde no cause in him. |
| 19:7 | The Iewes answered him. We have a lawe and by oure lawe he ought to dye: because he made him selfe the sonne of God. |
| 19:8 | When Pylate hearde that sayinge he was the moare afrayde |
| 19:9 | and went agayne into ye iudgment hall and sayde vnto Iesus: whence arte thou? But Iesus gave him none answere. |
| 19:10 | Then sayde Pylate vnto him. Speakest thou not vnto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify the and have power to lowse the? |
| 19:11 | Iesus answered: Thou couldest have no power at all agaynst me except it were geven the from above. Therfore he yt delyvered me vnto the is moare in synne. |
| 19:12 | And from thence forthe sought Pylate meanes to lowse him: but the Iewes cryed sayinge: yf thou let him goo thou arte not Cesars frende. For whosoever maketh hi selfe a kynge is agaynst Cesar |
| 19:13 | When Pylate hearde yt sayinge he brought Iesus forthe and sate doune to geve sentece in a place called the pavement: but in the Hebrue tonge Gabbatha. |
| 19:14 | It was the Saboth even which falleth in the ester fest and aboute the sixte houre. And he sayde vnto the Iewes: beholde youre kynge. |
| 19:15 | They cryed awaye with him awaye with him crucify him. Pylate sayde vnto them. Shall I crucify youre kynge? The hye Prestes answered: we have no kynge but Cesar. |
| 19:16 | Then delyvered he him vnto them to be crucified. And they toke Iesus and led him awaye. |
| 19:17 | And he bare his crosse and went forthe into a place called the place of deed mens sculles which is named in Hebrue Golgatha. |
| 19:18 | Where they crucified him and two other with him on ether syde one and Iesus in the myddes. |
| 19:19 | And Pylate wrote his tytle and put it on the crosse. The writynge was Iesus of Nazareth kynge of the Iewes. |
| 19:20 | This tytle reed many of the Iewes. For the place where Iesus was crucified was nye to the cite. And it was written in Hebrue Greke and Latyn. |
| 19:21 | Then sayde the hye prestes of ye Iewes to Pylate: wryte not kynge of the Iewes: but that he sayde I am kynge of the Iewes. |
| 19:22 | Pylate answered: what I have written that have I written. |
| 19:23 | Then the soudiers when they had crucified Iesus toke his garmentes and made foure partes to every soudier a parte and also his coote. The coote was with out seme wrought vpon thorowe out. |
| 19:24 | And they sayde one to another. Let vs not devyde it: but cast loostes who shall have it That the scripture myght be fulfilled which sayth. They parted my rayment amonge them and on my coote dyd cast lottes. And the soudiers dyd soche thinges in dede. |
| 19:25 | Ther stode by the crosse of Iesus his mother and his mothers sister Mary the wyfe of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene. |
| 19:26 | When Iesus sawe his mother and the disciple stondynge whom he loved he sayde vnto his mother: woman beholde thy sonne. |
| 19:27 | Then sayde he to ye disciple: beholde thy mother. And fro that houre the disciple toke her for his awne. |
| 19:28 | After that when Iesus perceaved that all thinges were performed: that the scripture myght be fulfilled he sayde: I thyrst. |
| 19:29 | Ther stode a vessell full of veneger by. And they filled a sponge with veneger and wounde it about with ysope and put it to his mouth. |
| 19:30 | Assone as Iesus had receaved of the veneger he sayd: It is fynesshed and bowed his heed and gaue vp the goost. |
| 19:31 | The Iewes then because it was the saboth eve that ye bodyes shuld not remayne apon ye crosse on ye saboth daye (for that saboth daye was an hye daye) besought Pylate that their legges myght be broken and that they myght be taken doune. |
| 19:32 | Then came the soudiers and brake the legges of the fyrst and of the other which was crucified with Iesus. |
| 19:33 | But when they came to Iesus and sawe that he was deed already they brake not his legges: |
| 19:34 | but one of the soudiers with a speare thrust him into the syde and forthwith came ther out bloud and water. |
| 19:35 | And he that sawe it bare recorde and his recorde is true. And he knoweth that he sayth true that ye myght beleve also. |
| 19:36 | These thinges were done that the scripture shuld be fulfilled: Ye shall not breake a boone of him. |
| 19:37 | And agayne another scripture sayth: They shall looke on him whom they pearsed. |
| 19:38 | After that Ioseph of Aramathia (which was a disciple of Iesus: but secretly for feare of ye Iewes) besought Pylate that he myght take doune the body of Iesus. And Pylate gave him licence. |
| 19:39 | And ther cam also Nicodemus which at the beginnynge came to Iesus by nyght and brought of myrre and aloes mingled to gether aboute an hundred pounde wayght |
| 19:40 | Then toke they the body of Iesu and wounde it in lynnen clothes with the odoures as ye maner of the Iewes is to bury. |
| 19:41 | And in the place where Iesus was crucified was a garden and in ye garden a newe sepulchre wherin was never man layd. |
| 19:42 | There layde they Iesus because of the Iewes saboth even for the sepulcre was nye at honde. |
| 19:1 | Then Pilate toke Iesus, and scourged him. |
| 19:2 | And the soudyers platted a crowne of thornes, and set it vpon his heade, and put a purple garment vpon him, |
| 19:3 | and sayde: Hayle kynge of the Iewes. And they smote him on the face. |
| 19:4 | Then wente Pilate forth agayne, and sayde vnto the: Beholde, I brynge him forth vnto you, yt ye maye knowe, yt I fynde no faute in hi. |
| 19:5 | So Iesus wente out, & ware a crowne of thorne and a purple robe. And he sayde vnto them: Beholde, the man. |
| 19:6 | Whan the hye prestes & the mynisters sawe him, they cryed, & sayde: Crucifye, crucifye. Pilate saide vnto the: Take ye him, and crucifye him, for I fynde no giltynesse in him. |
| 19:7 | The Iewes answered him: We haue a lawe, & after oure lawe he ought to dye, because he made him self the sonne of God. |
| 19:8 | Whan Pilate herde that worde, he was the more afrayed, |
| 19:9 | and wente agayne in to the comon hall, and sayde vnto Iesus: Whence art thou? But Iesus gaue him no answere. |
| 19:10 | The sayde Pilate vnto him: Speakest thou not vnto me? Knowest thou not, yt I haue power to crucifye ye, & haue power to lowse ye? |
| 19:11 | Iesus answered: Thou shuldest haue no power vpo me, yf it were not geue the from aboue. Therfore he that delyuered me vnto ye, hath the more synne. |
| 19:12 | From that tyme forth Pilate sought meanes to lowse him. But the Iewes cryed, & sayde: Yf thou let him go, thou art not the Emperours frede. For whosoeuer maketh himself kynge, is agaynst the Emperoure. |
| 19:13 | Whan Pilate herde yt worde, he brought Iesus forth, & sat hi downe vpo ye iugdmet seate, in the place which is called the Pauement, but in the Hebrue, Gabbatha. |
| 19:14 | It was the daye of preparinge of the Easter aboute the sixte houre. And he sayde vnto the Iewes: Beholde yor kynge. |
| 19:15 | But they cryed: Awaye wt him, awaye wt him, crucifie him. Pilate saide vnto the: Shal I crucifye yor kynge? The hye prestes answered: We haue no kynge but ye Emperor. |
| 19:16 | The delyuered he him vnto them, to be crucifyed. They toke Iesus, and led him awaye. |
| 19:17 | And he bare his crosse, and wente out to the place called ye place of deed men skulles, which in Hebrue is named Golgatha, |
| 19:18 | where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either syde one, but Iesus in the myddes |
| 19:19 | Pilate wrote a superscripcion, and set vpon the crosse. And there was wrytten: Iesus of Nazareth, kynge of the Iewes. |
| 19:20 | This superscripcion red many of the Iewes. For ye place where Iesus was crucifyed, was nye vnto the cite. And it was wrytten in Hebrue, Greke & Latyn. |
| 19:21 | Then sayde the hye prestes of the Iewes vnto Pilate: Wryte not kynge of the Iewes, but yt he sayde, I am kynge of the Iewes. |
| 19:22 | Pilate answered: What I haue wrytten, that haue I wrytten. |
| 19:23 | The sondyers, whan they had crucifyed Iesus, toke his garmentes, and made foure partes, to euery soudyer one patte, and the cote also. As for the cote, it was vnsowed fro aboue, wrought thorow and thorow. |
| 19:24 | Then sayde they one to another: Let vs not deuyde it, but cast lottes for it, who shal haue it, that the scripture might be fulfilled, which sayeth: They haue parted my garmentes amonge them, and on my cote haue they cast lottes. This dyd the soudyers |
| 19:25 | There stode by the crosse of Iesus, his mother, and his mothers sister Mary, the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. |
| 19:26 | Now whan Iesus sawe his mother, and the disciple stondynge by, who he loued, he sayde vnto his mother: Woman, beholde, that is thy sonne. |
| 19:27 | Then sayde he to the disciple: beholde, that is thy mother. And from that houre the disciple toke her vnto him. |
| 19:28 | After that whan Iesus knewe that all was perfourmed, that the scripture might be fulfylled, he sayde: I am a thyrst. |
| 19:29 | There stode a vessell full of vyneger. They fylled a sponge with vyneger and wonde it aboute with ysope, and helde it to his mouth. |
| 19:30 | Now whan Iesus had receaued the vyneger, he sayde: It is fynished, and bowed his heade, and gaue vp the goost. |
| 19:31 | The Iewes then, for so moch as it was the daye of preparinge, that ye bodies shulde not remayne vpon the crosse on the Sabbath, (for ye same Sabbath daye was greate) besought Pilate, that their legges might be broken, and that they might be taken downe |
| 19:32 | Then came the soudyers, and brake the legges of the first, and of the other that was crucifyed with him. |
| 19:33 | But whan they came to Iesus, and sawe that he was deed allready, they brake not his legges, |
| 19:34 | but one of the soudyers opened his syde with a speare. And immediatly there wente out bloude and water. |
| 19:35 | And he that sawe it, bare recorde, and his recorde is true. And he knoweth that he sayeth true, that ye might beleue also. |
| 19:36 | For this is done, yt the scripture might be fulfylled: Ye shal not breake a bone of him. |
| 19:37 | And agayne, another scripture sayeth: They shal se him, whom they haue pearsed. |
| 19:38 | After that, Ioseph of Arimathia, which was a disciple of Iesus (but secretly for feare of the Iewes) besought Pilate, yt he might take downe the body of Iesus. And Pilate gaue him lycence. |
| 19:39 | There came also Nicodemus, (which afore came vnto Iesus by night) & brought of Myrre & Aloes mingled together, aboute an hudreth poude weight. |
| 19:40 | The toke they the body of Iesus, & wonde it with lynnen clothes, and with the spyces, as the maner of the Iewes is to burye. |
| 19:41 | And by ye place where Iesus was crucified, there was a garde, and in the garden a new sepulchre, where in was neuer man layed: |
| 19:42 | there layed they Iesus, because of the preparinge daye of ye Iewes, for the sepulcre was nye at hande. |
