Acts - Chapter: 5

>
5:1But a certaine man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, solde a possession,
5:2And kept backe part of the price, his wife also being priuy to it, and brought a certaine part, and layd it at the Apostles feete.
5:3But Peter said, Ananias, Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the holy Ghost, and to keepe backe part of the price of the land?
5:4Whiles it remained, was it not thine owne? and after it was sold, was it not in thine owne power? why hast thou conceiued this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied vnto men, but vnto God.
5:5And Ananias hearing these words, fell downe, and gaue vp the ghost: and great feare came on all them that heard these things.
5:6And the yong men arose, wound him vp, and caried him out, and buried him.
5:7And it was about the space of three houres after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
5:8And Peter answered vnto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she saide, Yea, for so much.
5:9Then Peter saide vnto her, How is it that ye haue agreed together, to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feete of them which haue buried thy husband, are at the doore, and shall cary thee out.
5:10Then fell she downe straightway at his feete, and yeelded vp the ghost: And the yong men came in, and found her dead, and carying her forth, buried her by her husband.
5:11And great feare came vpon all the Church, and vpon as many as heard these things.
5:12And by the hands of the Apostles, were many signes and wonders wrought among the people. (And they were all with one accord in Solomons porch.
5:13And of the rest durst no man ioyne himselfe to them: But the people magnified them.
5:14And beleeuers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
5:15Insomuch that they brought foorth the sicke into the streetes, and layed them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by, might ouershadow some of them.
5:16There came also a multitude out of the cities round about vnto Hierusalem, bringing sicke folkes, and them which were vexed with vncleane spirits: and they were healed euery one.
5:17Then the high Priest rose vp, and al they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadduces) and were filled with indignation,
5:18And laid their hands on the Apostles, & put them in the common prison.
5:19But the Angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doores, and brought them foorth, and said,
5:20Goe, stand and speake in the Temple to the people all the words of this life.
5:21And when they heard that, they entred into the Temple early in the morning, & taught: but the high Priest came, and they that were with him, and called the Councill together, and all the Senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to haue them brought.
5:22But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told,
5:23Saying, The prison truely found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doores, but when we had opened, we found no man within.
5:24Now when the high Priest, and the captaine of the Temple, and the chiefe Priests heard these things, they doubted of them wherunto this would grow.
5:25Then came one, and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison, are standing in the Temple, and teaching the people.
5:26Then went the captaine with the officers, and brought them without violence: (For they feared the people, lest they should haue bene stoned.)
5:27And when they had brought them, they set them before the Councill, and the high Priest asked them,
5:28Saying, Did not wee straitly command you, that you should not teach in this Name? And behold, yee haue filled Hierusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this mans blood vpon vs.
5:29Then Peter, and the other Apostles answered, and saide, Wee ought to obey God rather then men.
5:30The God of our fathers raised vp Iesus, whom yee slew and hanged on a tree.
5:31Him hath God exalted with his right hand to bee a Prince and a Sauiour, for to giue repentance to Israel, and forgiuenesse of sinnes.
5:32And we are his witnesses of these things, and so is also the holy Ghost, whom God hath giuen to them that obey him.
5:33When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and tooke counsell to slay them.
5:34Then stood there vp one in the Councill, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctour of Law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the Apostles forth a litle space,
5:35And said vnto them, Yee men of Israel, take heed to your selues, what ye intend to doe as touching these men.
5:36For before these dayes rose vp Theudas, boasting himselfe to be some body, to whom a number of men, about foure hundred, ioyned themselues: who was slaine, and all, as many as obeied him, were scattered, & brought to nought.
5:37After this man rose vp Iudas of Galilee, in the dayes of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: hee also perished, and all, euen as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.
5:38And now I say vnto you, refraine from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsell or this worke be of men, it will come to nought.
5:39But if it be of God, ye cannot ouerthrow it, lest haply yee be found euen to fight against God.
5:40And to him they agreed: and when they had called the Apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speake in the Name of Iesus, and let them goe.
5:41And they departed from the presence of the Councill, reioycing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his Name.
5:42And dayly in the Temple, and in euery house, they ceased not to teach and preach Iesus Christ.

5:1But a certayne man named Ananias with Saphira his wife, solde his possession,
5:2and kepte awaye parte of the money (his wife knowinge of it) and broughte one parte, & layed it at the Apostles fete.
5:3But Peter sayde: Ananias, Wherfore hath Sathan fylled thine hert, that thou shuldest lye vnto the holy goost, and withdrawe awaye parte of the money of the lyuelod?
5:4Mightest thou not haue kepte it, whan thou haddest it? And whan it was solde, the money was also in thy power: Why hast thou then conceaued this thinge in thine hert? Thou hast not lyed vnto me, but vnto God.
5:5Whan Ananias herde these wordes, he fell downe, & gaue vp the goost. And there came a greate feare vpon all the that herde of this.
5:6The yonge men rose vp, and put him asyde, and caried him out, and buried him.
5:7And it fortuned as it were aboute ye space of thre houres after, his wife came in, and knewe not what was done.
5:8But Peter answered vnto her. Tell me, solde ye the londe for somoch? She sayde: Yee, for so moch.
5:9Peter sayde vnto her: Why haue ye agreed together, to tempte the sprete of the LORDE? Beholde, the fete of the which haue buried thy hussbande, are at the dore, & shal carye the out.
5:10And immediatly she fell downe at his fete, and gaue vp the goost. Then came in the yonge men, and founde her deed, and caried her out, and buried her by hir hussbade.
5:11And there came a greate feare ouer the whole congregacion, and ouer all the that herde it.
5:12Many tokens and wonders were done amonge the people by the hades of the Apostles (and they were all together with one acorde in Salomons porche:
5:13but of other there durst no man ioyne him self vnto the, neuertheles the people helde moch of them.
5:14The multitude of the men and women that beleued in the LORDE, grewe more and more)
5:15In so moch that they brought out the sycke in to the stretes, and layed them vpon beddes and barowes, that at the leest waye the shadowe of Peter (whan he came by) might ouershadowe some of the.
5:16There came many also out of ye cities rounde aboute vnto Ierusalem, and brought the sicke and the that were vexed with vncleane spretes, and they were healed euery one.
5:17But the hye prest rose vp, and all they yt were with him, which is the secte of the Saduces, and were full of indignacion,
5:18& layed handes on the Apostles, and put them in the comon preson.
5:19But the angell of ye LORDE by night opened the preson dores, and brought the out, and sayde:
5:20Go youre waye and steppe vp, and speake in the temple to the people all the wordes of this life.
5:21Whan they herde that, they entred in to the temple early in the mornynge: and taught. But the hye prest came, and they yt were with him, and called the councell together, & all ye Elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the preson to fet them.
5:22The mynisters came and founde them not in the preson, came agayne, and tolde,
5:23and sayde:The preson founde we shut with all diligence, and the kepers stondinge without before the dores: but wha we had opened, we founde noman therin.
5:24Whan the hye prest, and the rulers of the temple and the other hye prestes herde these wordes, they douted of them, whervnto this wolde growe.
5:25Then came there one, which tolde them: Beholde, the men that ye put in preson, are in the temple, stondinge and teachinge the people.
5:26Then wete ye rulers with their mynisters, and fetched them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they shulde haue bene stoned.
5:27And whan they had brought them, they set the before the councell. And the hye prest axed them,
5:28and sayde: Dyd not we comaunde you strately, that ye shulde not teache in this name. And beholde, ye haue fylled Ierusalem with youre doctryne, and ye intede to brynge this mans bloude vpon vs.
5:29But Peter and the Apostles answered, and sayde: We ought more to obeye God then men.
5:30The God of oure fathers hath raysed vp Iesus, who ye slewe, and hanged on tre.
5:31Him hath the righte hande of God exalted, to be a prynce and Sauioure, to geue repentaunce and forgeuenesse of synnes vnto Israel.
5:32And we are his recordes of these wordes, and the holy goost, who God hath geuen vnto the that obeye him.
5:33Wha they herde that, it wente thorow the hertes of them, and they thoughte to slaye them.
5:34Then stode there vp in ye councell a pharyse, named Gamaliel, a scribe, had in greate reputacion before all ye people, and bad put the Apostles asyde a litle,
5:35and sayde vnto them: Ye men of Israel, take hede to youre selues, what ye do as touchinge these men.
5:36Before these dayes rose vp one Theudas, boostinge himself. (And there cleued vnto him a nobre of me, aboute a foure hundreth) which was slayne, and all they yt enclyned vnto him, were scatred abrode, and brought to naught.
5:37After this stode vp Iudas of Galile in ye dayes of trybute, and drewe awaye moch people after him, & he also perished, & all they that enclyned vnto him, are scatred abrode.
5:38And now I saye vnto you: refrayne yor selues fro these men, and let the go. Yf this councell or worke be of me, it wil come to naught:
5:39but yf it be of God, ye are not able to destroye it, lest ye be founde to be the men, that wil stryue agaynst God.
5:40Then they agreed vnto him, and called the Apostles, and bet them, and commaunded them, that they shulde speake nothinge in the name of Iesu, and let them go.
5:41But they departed from the presence of the councell, reioysinge, that they were worthy to suffre rebuke for his names sake.
5:42And daylie in the temple and in euery house they ceassed not, to teache and to preache the Gospell of Iesus Christ.

5:1But a man, Anany bi name, with Safira, his wijf,
5:2seelde a feeld, and defraudide of the prijs of the feeld; and his wijf was witinge. And he brouyte a part, and leide bifor the feet of the apostlis.
5:3And Petre seide to hym, Anany, whi hath Sathanas temptid thin herte, that thou lye to the Hooli Goost, and to defraude of the prijs of the feeld?
5:4Whethir it vnseld was not thin; and whanne it was seld, it was in thi power? Whi hast thou put this thing in thin herte? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God.
5:5Anany herde these wordis, and felde doun, and was deed. And greet drede was maad on alle that herden.
5:6And yonge men risen, and mouyden hym awei, and baren hym out, and birieden.
5:7And ther was maad as a space of thre ouris, and his wijf knewe not that thing that was don, and entride.
5:8And Petre answerde to hir, Womman, seie to me, whether ye seelden the feeld for so mych? And sche seide, Yhe, for so mych.
5:9And Petre seide to hyr, What bifelde to you, to tempte the spirit of the Lord? Lo! the feet of hem that han birieden thin hosebonde ben at the dore, and thei schulen bere thee out.
5:10Anoon sche felde doun at hise feet, and diede. And the yonge men entriden, and founden hir deed, and thei baren hir out, and birieden to hir hosebonde.
5:11And greet drede was maad in al the chirche, and in to alle that herden these thingis.
5:12And bi the hoondis of the apostlis signes and many wondris weren maad in the puple. And alle weren of oon acord in the porche of Salomon.
5:13But no man of othere durste ioyne hymsilf with hem, but the puple magnyfiede hem.
5:14And the multitude of men and of wymmen bileuynge in the Lord was more encreessid,
5:15so that thei brouyten out sike men in to stretis, and leiden in litle beddis and couchis, that whanne Petre cam, nameli the schadew of hym schulde schadewe ech of hem, and thei schulden be delyuerid fro her syknessis.
5:16And the multitude of citees niy to Jerusalem ran, bryngynge sijk men, and that weren trauelid of vnclene spiritis, whiche alle weren heelid.
5:17But the prince of preestis roos vp, and alle that weren with hym, that is the eresye of Saduceis, and weren fillid with enuye;
5:18and leiden hondis on the apostlis, and puttiden hem in the comyn warde.
5:19But the aungel of the Lord openyde bi nyyt the yatis of the prisoun, and ledde hem out, and seide, Go ye,
5:20and stonde ye, and speke in the temple to the puple alle the wordis of this lijf.
5:21Whom whanne thei hadden herd, thei entriden eerli in to the temple, and tauyten. And the prince of preestis cam, and thei that weren with him, and clepiden togidre the counsel, and alle the eldre men of the children of Israel; and senten to the prisoun, that thei schulden be brouyt forth.
5:22And whanne the mynystris camen, founden hem not, and for the prisoun was openyd, thei turneden ayen,
5:23and teelden, and seiden, We founden the prisoun schit with al diligence, and the keperis stondynge at the yatis; but we opneden, and founden no man ther ynne.
5:24And as the maiestratis of the temple, and the princis of preestis herden these wordis, thei doutiden of hem, what was don.
5:25But a man cam, and teelde to hem, For lo! tho men whiche ye han put in to prisoun, ben in the temple, and stonden, and techen the puple.
5:26Thanne the magistrat wente with the mynystris, and brouyte hem with out violence; for thei dredden the puple, lest thei schulden be stonyd.
5:27And whanne thei hadden brouyt hem, thei settiden hem in the counsel; and the princes of prestis axiden hem,
5:28and seiden, In comaundement we comaundiden you, that ye schulden not teche in this name, and lo! ye han fillid Jerusalem with youre teching, and ye wolen bringe on vs the blood of this man.
5:29And Petre answeride, and the apostlis, and seiden, It bihoueth to obeie to God, more than to men.
5:30God of oure fadris reiside Jhesu, whom ye slowen, hangynge in a tre.
5:31God enhaunside with his riythond this prince and sauyour, that penaunce were yyue to Israel, and remyssioun of synnes.
5:32And we ben witnessis of these wordis, and the Hooli Goost, whom God yaf to alle obeischinge to him.
5:33Whanne thei herden these thingis, thei weren turmentid, and thouyten to sle hem.
5:34But a man roos in the counsel, a Farise, Gamaliel bi name, a doctour of the lawe, a worschipful man to al the puple, and comaundide the men to be put without forth for a while.
5:35And he seide to hem, Ye men of Israel, take tent to you silf on these men, what ye schulen do.
5:36For bifore these daies Teodas, that seide hym silf to be sum man, to whom a noumbre of men consentiden, aboute foure hundrid; which was slayn, and alle that bileueden to hym, weren disparplit, and brouyt to nouyt.
5:37Aftir this, Judas of Galilee was in the daies of professioun, and turnyde awei the puple aftir hym; and alle hou manye euere consentiden to hym, weren scatered, and he perischide.
5:38And now therfor Y seie to you, departe ye fro these men, and suffre ye hem; for if this counsel ether werk is of men, it schal be vndon;
5:39but if it is of God, ye moun not vndo hem, lest perauenture ye be foundun to repugne God.
5:40And thei consentiden to him; and thei clepiden togidere the apostlis, and denounsiden to hem, that weren betun, that thei schulden no more speke in the name of Jhesu, and thei leten hem go.
5:41And thei wenten ioiynge fro the siyt of the counsel, that thei weren had worthi to suffre dispisyng for the name of Jhesu.
5:42ech dai thei ceessiden not in the temple, and aboute housis, to teche and to preche Jhesu Crist.
