Acts - Chapter: 22


22:1	Men, brethren, and fathers, heare ye my defence which I make now vnto you.
22:2	(And when they heard that hee spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
22:3	I am verely a man which am a Iew, borne in Tarsus a citie in Cilicia, yet brought vp in this citie at the feete of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect maner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous towards God, as ye all are this day.
22:4	And I persecuted this way vnto the death, binding and deliuering into prisons both men and women,
22:5	As also the high Priest doth beare me witnesse, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I receiued letters vnto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there, bound vnto Hierusalem, for to be punished.
22:6	And it came to passe, that as I made my iourney, & was come nigh vnto Damascus about noone, suddenly there shone from heauen a great light round about me.
22:7	And I fell vnto the ground, and heard a voice saying vnto mee, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
22:8	And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said vnto me, I am Iesus of Nazareth who thou persecutest.
22:9	And they that were with me saw indeede the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
22:10	And I saide, What shall I doe, Lord? And the Lord said vnto me, Arise, and goe into Damascus, and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to doe.
22:11	And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
22:12	And one Ananias, a deuout man according to the law, hauing a good report of al the Iewes which dwelt there,
22:13	Came vnto me, and stood, & said vnto me, Brother Saul, receiue thy sight. And the same houre I looked vp vpon him.
22:14	And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, & see that Iust one, and shouldest heare the voice of his mouth.
22:15	For thou shalt be his witnes vnto al men, of what thou hast seene & heard.
22:16	And now, why tariest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sinnes, calling on the name of the Lord.
22:17	And it came to passe, that when I was come againe to Hierusalem, euen while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance,
22:18	And saw him saying vnto mee, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Hierusalem: for they will not receiue thy testimony concerning me.
22:19	And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned, and beat in euery synagogue them that beleeued on thee.
22:20	And when ye blood of thy martyr Steuen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting vnto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
22:21	And he said vnto me, Depart: for I will send thee farre hence, vnto the Gentiles.
22:22	And they gaue him audience vnto this word, and then lift vp their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should liue.
22:23	And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, & threw dust into the aire,
22:24	The chiefe captaine commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that hee should be examined by scourging: that he might know wherfore they cried so against him.
22:25	And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said vnto the Centurion that stood by, Is it lawfull for you to scourge a man that is a Romane, and vncondemned?
22:26	When the Centurion heard that, hee went and told the chiefe captaine, saying, Take heede what thou doest, for this man is a Romane.
22:27	Then the chiefe captaine came; and said vnto him, Tell me, art thou a Romane? He said, Yea.
22:28	And the chiefe captaine answered, With a great summe obteined I this freedome. And Paul said, But I was free borne.
22:29	Then straightway they departed from him which should haue examined him: and the chiefe captaine also was afraid after he knew that he was a Romane, & because he had bound him.
22:30	On the morrow, because he would haue knowen the certaintie wherefore he was accused of the Iewes, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chiefe Priests and all their Councill to appeare, and brought Paul downe, and set him before them.


22:1	Ye men, brethren, and fathers, heare myne answere which I make vnto you.
22:2	Whan they herde that he spake vnto them in the Hebrue, they kepte the more sylence. And he sayde:
22:3	I am a man which am a Iewe, borne at Tharsis in Celicia, and broughte vp in this cite at the fete off Gamaliel, enfourmed diligently in the lawe of the fathers, and was feruent mynded to God warde, as ye all are also this daye,
22:4	and I persecuted this waye vnto the death. I bounde them and delyuered them vnto preson, both men and wemen,
22:5	as ye hye prest also doth beare me wytnesse, and all ye Elders: of whom I receaued letters vnto the brethren, and wente towarde Damascon, that I mighte brynge them which were there, bounde to Ierusalem, to be punyshed.
22:6	But it fortuned as I made my iourney, and came nye vnto Damascon, aboute noone, sodenly there shone a greate lighte aboute me from heauen,
22:7	and I fell to the earth, and herde a voyce which sayde vnto me: Saull Saull, why persecutest thou me?
22:8	I answered: Who art thou LORDE? And he sayde vnto me: I am Iesus of Nazareth whom thou persecutest.
22:9	As for them that were with me, they sawe ye lighte and were afrayed, but they herde not the voyce of him that spake with me.
22:10	I sayde: LORDE, what shal I do? The LORDE sayde vnto me: Aryse, and go in to Damascon, there shal it be tolde ye of all that is appoynted the to do.
22:11	But whan I sawe nothinge for the bryghtnesse of the lighte, I was led by the hande of them that were with me, and came to Damascon.
22:12	There was one Ananias, a deuoute man after the lawe, which had a good reporte of all the Iewes that dwelt there,
22:13	the same came, and stepte vnto me, and sayde: Brother Saul, loke vp. And I loked vp vpon him the same houre.
22:14	He sayde: The God of oure fathers hath ordeyned the before, that thou shuldest knowe his wyll, and se the thinge yt is rightfull, and heare the voyce out of his mouth:
22:15	for thou shalt be his wytnesse vnto all men, of tho thinges which thou hast sene and herde.
22:16	And now why tariest thou? Aryse, and be baptysed, and wasse awaye thy synnes, and call vpon the name of the LORDE.
22:17	But it fortuned, that whan I was come agayne to Ierusale, and prayed in the temple, I was in a traunce,
22:18	and sawe him. Then sayde he vnto me: Make haist, and get the soone out of Ierusalem, for they wyl not receaue the witnesse that thou bearest of me.
22:19	And I sayde: LORDE, they the selues knowe that I put in preson and bett in euery synagoge them that beleued on the.
22:20	And wha the bloude of Steue thy witnesse was shed, I stode by also, & consented vnto his death, and kepte the clothes of them that slewe him.
22:21	And he sayde vnto me: Go thy waye, for I wil sende the farre amonge the Hey then.
22:22	They gaue him audience vnto this worde, and lifte vp their voyce, & sayde: Awaye with soch a felowe from the earth, for it is not reason that he shulde lyue.
22:23	But as they cried, and cast of their clothes, & thrue dust in to the ayre,
22:24	the captayne bad brynge him into the castell, and commaunded him to be beaten with roddes and to be examyned, that he mighte knowe, for what cause they cried so vpon him.
22:25	And whan he bounde him with thonges, Paul sayde vnto the vndercaptayne that stode by: Is it laufull for you to scourge a man that is a Romayne, and vncondemned?
22:26	Whan the vndercaptayne herde that, he wete to the vpper captayne, and tolde him, and sayde? What wilt thou do? This man is a Romayne.
22:27	Then came ye vpper captayne, and sayde vnto him: Tell me, art thou a Romayne? He sayde: Yee.
22:28	And the vpper captayne answered: With a greate summe optayned I this fredome.But Paul sayde: As for me, I am a Romayne borne.
22:29	The straight waye departed from him, they that shulde haue examyned him. And ye chefe captayne was afrayed, whan he knewe that he was a Romayne, and because he had bounde him.
22:30	On the nexte daye wolde he knowe the certentye wherfore he was accused of the Iewes, and he lowsed him from the bondes, and commaunded the hye prestes and all their councell to come together, and broughte Paul forth, and set him amonge them.


22:1	Britheren and fadris, here ye what resoun Y yelde now to you.
22:2	And whanne sum herden that in Ebrew tunge he spak to hem, thei yauen the more silence.
22:3	And he seide, Y am a man a Jew, borun at Tharse of Cilicie, nurischid and in this citee bisidis the feet of Gamaliel, tauyt bi the treuthe of fadris lawe, a louyere of the lawe, as also ye alle ben to dai.
22:4	And Y pursuede this weie til to the deth, byndynge and bitakinge `in to holdis men and wymmen,
22:5	as the prince of prestis yeldith witnessyng to me, and alle the grettest in birth. Of whom also Y took pistlis to britheren, and wente to Damask, to bring fro thennys men boundun in to Jerusalem, that thei schulden be peyned.
22:6	And it was don, while Y yede, and neiyede to Damask, at myddai sudeynli fro heuene a greet plente of liyt schoon aboute me.
22:7	And Y felde doun to the erthe, and herde a voice fro heuene, seiynge to me, Saul, Saul, what pursuest thou me? It is hard to thee to kike ayens the pricke.
22:8	And Y answeride, Who art thou, Lord? And he seide to me, Y am Jhesu of Nazareth, whom thou pursuest.
22:9	And thei that weren with me sien but the liyt, but thei herden not the vois of hym, that spak with me.
22:10	And Y seide, Lord, what schal Y do? And the Lord seide to me, Rise thou, and go to Damask; and there it schal be seid to thee, of alle thingis which it bihoueth thee to do.
22:11	And whanne Y saye not, for the clerete of that liyt, Y was led bi the hond of felowis, and Y cam to Damask.
22:12	And a man, Ananye, that bi the lawe hadde wytnessyng of alle Jewis dwellinge in Damask,
22:13	cam to me, and stood niy, and seide to me, Saul, brother, biholde. And Y in the same our biheelde in to hym.
22:14	And he seide, God of oure fadris hath bifor ordeyned thee, that thou schuldist knowe the wille of him, and schuldist se the riytful man, and here the vois of his mouth.
22:15	For thou schalt be his witnesse to alle men, of tho thingis that thou hast seyn and herd.
22:16	And now, what dwellist thou? Rise vp, and be baptisid, and waische awei thi synnes, bi the name of hym clepid to help.
22:17	And it was don to me, as Y turnede ayen in to Jerusalem, and preyede in the temple, that Y was maad in rauysching of soule,
22:18	and Y siy him seiynge to me, Hiye thou, and go out faste of Jerusalem, for thei schulen not resseyue thi witnessing of me.
22:19	And Y seide, Lord, thei witen, that Y was closing togidir `in to prisoun, and betinge bi synagogis hem that bileueden `in to thee.
22:20	And whanne the blood of Steuene, thi witnesse, was sched out, Y stood niy, and consentide, and kept the clothis of men that slowen hym.
22:21	And he seide to me, Go thou, for Y schal sende thee fer to naciouns.
22:22	And thei herden him til this word; and thei reiseden her vois, and seiden, Take awei fro the erthe siche a maner man; for it is not leueful, that he lyue.
22:23	And whanne thei crieden, and kesten awei her clothis, and threwen dust in to the eir,
22:24	the tribune comaundide hym to be led in to castels, and to be betun with scourgis, and to be turmentid, that he wiste, for what cause thei crieden so to him.
22:25	And whanne thei hadden boundun hym with cordis, Poul seide to a centurien stondinge niy to hym, Whether it is leueful to you, to scourge a Romayn, and vndampned?
22:26	And whanne this thing was herd, the centurien wente to the tribune, and telde to hym, and seide, What art thou to doynge? for this man is a citeseyn of Rome.
22:27	And the tribune cam niy, and seide to hym, Seie thou to me, whether thou art a Romayn?
22:28	And he seide, Yhe. And the tribune answeride, Y with myche summe gat this fredom. And Poul seide, And Y was borun a citeseyn of Rome.
22:29	Therfor anoon thei that schulden haue turmentid hym, departiden awei fro hym. And the tribune dredde, aftir that he wiste, that he was a citeseyn of Rome, and for he hadde boundun hym.
22:30	But in the dai suynge he wolde wite more diligentli, for what cause he were accusid of the Jewis, and vnbounde hym, and comaundide prestis and al the counsel to come togidir. And he brouyte forth Poul, and sette hym among hem.
