| 22:1 | "Men, brethren, and fathers, hear my defense which I make before you now." |
| 22:2 | And when they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they kept all the more silent. Then he said: |
| 22:3 | "I am indeed a man who is a Jew, born in Tarsus a city in Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the perfect method of our fathers' law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today. |
| 22:4 | And I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women, |
| 22:5 | as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring those who were there in chains to Jerusalem to be punished. |
| 22:6 | "Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me. |
| 22:7 | And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?'" |
| 22:8 | So I replied, 'Who are You, Lord?' And He said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.'" |
| 22:9 | "And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me. |
| 22:10 | So I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.'" |
| 22:11 | And since I could not see because of the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus. |
| 22:12 | "Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there, |
| 22:13 | came to me; and he stood and said to me, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight.' And at that same hour I looked up at him. |
| 22:14 | Then he said, 'The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth. |
| 22:15 | Because, you will be His witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. |
| 22:16 | And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.' |
| 22:17 | "Now it happened, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I was in a trance |
| 22:18 | and saw Him saying to me, 'Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.'" |
| 22:19 | So I said, 'Lord, they know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believe on You. |
| 22:20 | And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by consenting to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.' |
| 22:21 | Then He said to me, 'Depart, because I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.'" |
| 22:22 | And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, "Away with such a man from the earth, because he is not fit to live!" |
| 22:23 | Then, as they shouted out and tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air, |
| 22:24 | the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted like this against him. |
| 22:25 | And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?" |
| 22:26 | When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, "Take care what you do, because this man is a Roman." |
| 22:27 | Then the commander came and said to him, "Tell me, are you a Roman?" He said, "Yes." |
| 22:28 | The commander replied, "With a large sum I obtained this freedom." And Paul said, "But I was born a free." |
| 22:29 | Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him. |
| 22:30 | The next day, because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from his bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down and set him before them. |
| 22:1 | Ye men, brethren and Fathers, heare my defence nowe towards you. |
| 22:2 | (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrewe tongue to them, they kept the more silence, and he sayd) |
| 22:3 | I am verely a man, which am a Iew, borne in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought vp in this citie at the feete of Gamaliel, and instructed according to the perfect maner of the Lawe of the Fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day. |
| 22:4 | And I persecuted this way vnto the death, binding and deliuering into prison both men and women. |
| 22:5 | As also ye chiefe Priest doeth beare me witnes, and al the company of the Elders: of whom also I receiued letters vnto the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring them which were there, bound vnto Hierusalem, that they might be punished. |
| 22:6 | And so it was, as I iourneyed and was come neere vnto Damascus about noone, that suddenly there shone from heauen a great light round about me. |
| 22:7 | So I fell vnto the earth, and heard a voyce, saying vnto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou mee? |
| 22:8 | Then I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Iesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. |
| 22:9 | Moreouer they that were with me, sawe in deede a light and were afraide: but they heard not the voyce of him that spake vnto me. |
| 22:10 | Then I sayd, What shall I doe, Lord? And the Lord sayde vnto me, Arise, and goe into Damascus: and there it shall be tolde thee of all things, which are appointed for thee to doe. |
| 22:11 | So when I could not see for the glory of that light, I was led by the hand of them that were with me, and came into Damascus. |
| 22:12 | And one Ananias a godly man, as perteining to the Lawe, hauing good report of all the Iewes which dwelt there, |
| 22:13 | Came vnto me, and stoode, and sayd vnto me, Brother Saul, receiue thy sight: and that same houre I looked vpon him. |
| 22:14 | And he sayd, The God of our fathers hath appointed thee, that thou shouldest knowe his wil, and shouldest see that Iust one, and shouldest heare the voyce of his mouth. |
| 22:15 | For thou shalt be his witnes vnto all men, of the things which thou hast seene and heard. |
| 22:16 | Now therefore why tariest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sinnes, in calling on the Name of the Lord. |
| 22:17 | And it came to passe, that when I was come againe to Hierusalem, and prayed in the Temple, I was in a traunce, |
| 22:18 | And saw him saying vnto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Hierusalem: for they will not receiue thy witnes concerning me. |
| 22:19 | Then I sayd, Lord, they know that I prisoned, and beat in euery Synagogue them that beleeued in thee. |
| 22:20 | And when the blood of thy martyr Steuen was shed, I also stood by, and consented vnto his death, and kept the clothes of them that slew him. |
| 22:21 | Then he sayd vnto me, Depart: for I will send thee farre hence vnto the Gentiles. |
| 22:22 | And they heard him vnto this worde, but then they lift vp their voyces, and sayd, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not meete that he should liue. |
| 22:23 | And as they cried and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the aire, |
| 22:24 | The chiefe captaine commanded him to be led into the castle, and bade that he should be scourged, and examined, that he might knowe wherefore they cryed so on him. |
| 22:25 | And as they bound him with thongs, Paul sayd vnto the Centurion that stood by, Is it lawfull for you to scourge one that is a Romane, and not condemned? |
| 22:26 | Nowe when the Centurion heard it, hee went, and tolde the chiefe captaine, saying, Take heede what thou doest: for this man is a Romane. |
| 22:27 | Then the chiefe captaine came, and sayd to him, Tel me, art thou a Romane? And he said, Yea. |
| 22:28 | And the chiefe captaine answered, With a great summe obtained I this freedome. Then Paul sayd, But I was so borne. |
| 22:29 | Then straightway they departed from him, which should haue examined him: and the chiefe captaine also was afrayd, after he knewe that hee was a Romane, and that he had bound him. |
| 22:30 | On the next day, because hee would haue knowen the certaintie wherefore he was accused of the Iewes, he loosed him from his bonds, and commanded the hie Priests and all their Councill to come together: and he brought Paul, and set him before them. |
| 22:1 | Ye men brethre and fathers heare myne answere which I make vnto you. |
| 22:2 | Whe they hearde that he spake in ye Ebrue tonge to them they kept the moore silence. And he sayde: |
| 22:3 | I am verely aman which am a Iewe borne in Tharsus a cite in Cicill: neverthelesse yet brought vp in this cite at ye fete of Gamaliel and informed diligently in the lawe of the fathers and was fervent mynded to Godwarde as ye all are this same daye |
| 22:4 | and I persecuted this waye vnto the deeth byndynge and delyveringe into preson bothe men and wemen |
| 22:5 | as the chefe prest doth beare me witnes and all the elders: of whom also I receaved letters vnto the brethren and wet to Damasco to bringe them which were there bounde vnto Ierusalem for to be punysshed. |
| 22:6 | And it fortuned as I made my iorney and was come nye vnto Damasco aboute none yt sodenly ther shone fro heaven a greate lyght rounde aboute me |
| 22:7 | and I fell vnto the erth and hearde a voyce sayinge vnto me: Saul Saul why persecutest thou me? |
| 22:8 | And I answered: what arte thou Lorde? And he sayd vnto me: I am Iesus of Nazareth whom thou persecutest. |
| 22:9 | And they that were with me sawe verely a lyght and were a frayde: but they hearde not the voyce of him that spake with me. |
| 22:10 | And I sayde: what shall I do Lorde? And the Lorde sayde vnto me: Aryse and goo into Damasco and there it shalbe tolde the of all thinges which are apoynted for the to do. |
| 22:11 | And when I sawe nothynge for the brightnes of that light I was ledde by the honde of them that were with me and came into Damasco. |
| 22:12 | And one Ananias a perfect man and as pertayninge to the lawe havinge good reporte of all the Iewes which there dwelt |
| 22:13 | came vnto me and stode and sayd vnto me: Brother Saul loke vp. And that same houre I receaved my sight and sawe him. |
| 22:14 | And he sayde the God of oure fathers hath ordeyned the before that thou shuldest knowe his will and shuldest se that which is rightfull and shuldest heare the voyce of his mouth: |
| 22:15 | for thou shalt be his witnes vnto all men of tho thinges which thou thou hast sene and hearde. |
| 22:16 | And now: why tariest thou? Aryse and be baptised and wesshe awaye thy synnes in callinge on ye name of ye Lorde. |
| 22:17 | And it fortuned when I was come agayne to Ierusalem and prayde in the teple yt I was in a trauce |

| 22:19 | And I sayde: Lorde they knowe that I presoned and bet in every synagoge them that beleved on the. |
| 22:20 | And when the bloud of thy witnes Steven was sheed I also stode by and consented vnto his deeth and kept the rayment of them that slewe him. |
| 22:21 | And he sayde vnto me: departe for I will sende the a farre hence vnto the Gentyls. |
| 22:22 | They gave him audience vnto this worde and then lifte vp their voyces and sayde: a waye wt soche a felowe fro the erth: yt is pitie that he shuld live. |
| 22:23 | And as they cryed and cast of their clothes and thrue dust into ye ayer |
| 22:24 | ye captayne bade him to be brought into the castle and commaunded him to be scourged and to be examined that he myght knowe wherfore they cryed on him. |
