2 Kings - Chapter: 17


17:1	In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel nine years.
17:2	And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.
17:3	Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents.
17:4	And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.
17:5	Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years.
17:6	In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
17:7	For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,
17:8	And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.
17:9	And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
17:10	And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree:
17:11	And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger:
17:12	For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing.
17:13	Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.
17:14	Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.
17:15	And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.
17:16	And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.
17:17	And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.
17:18	Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
17:19	Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
17:20	And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.
17:21	For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD, and made them sin a great sin.
17:22	For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them;
17:23	Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.
17:24	And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.
17:25	And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the LORD: therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which slew some of them.
17:26	Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.
17:27	Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.
17:28	Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.
17:29	Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.
17:30	And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima,
17:31	And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.
17:32	So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.
17:33	They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.
17:34	Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;
17:35	With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:
17:36	But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
17:37	And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods.
17:38	And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods.
17:39	But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.
17:40	Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner.
17:41	So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.


17:1	בשׁנת שׁתים עשׂרה לאחז מלך יהודה מלך הושׁע בן אלה בשׁמרון על ישׂראל תשׁע שׁנים׃
17:2	ויעשׂ הרע בעיני יהוה רק לא כמלכי ישׂראל אשׁר היו לפניו׃
17:3	עליו עלה שׁלמנאסר מלך אשׁור ויהי לו הושׁע עבד וישׁב לו מנחה׃
17:4	וימצא מלך אשׁור בהושׁע קשׁר אשׁר שׁלח מלאכים אל סוא מלך מצרים ולא העלה מנחה למלך אשׁור כשׁנה בשׁנה ויעצרהו מלך אשׁור ויאסרהו בית כלא׃
17:5	ויעל מלך אשׁור בכל הארץ ויעל שׁמרון ויצר עליה שׁלשׁ שׁנים׃
17:6	בשׁנת התשׁיעית להושׁע לכד מלך אשׁור את שׁמרון ויגל את ישׂראל אשׁורה וישׁב אתם בחלח ובחבור נהר גוזן וערי מדי׃
17:7	ויהי כי חטאו בני ישׂראל ליהוה אלהיהם המעלה אתם מארץ מצרים מתחת יד פרעה מלך מצרים וייראו אלהים אחרים׃
17:8	וילכו בחקות הגוים אשׁר הורישׁ יהוה מפני בני ישׂראל ומלכי ישׂראל אשׁר עשׂו׃
17:9	ויחפאו בני ישׂראל דברים אשׁר לא כן על יהוה אלהיהם ויבנו להם במות בכל עריהם ממגדל נוצרים עד עיר מבצר׃
17:10	ויצבו להם מצבות ואשׁרים על כל גבעה גבהה ותחת כל עץ רענן׃
17:11	ויקטרו שׁם בכל במות כגוים אשׁר הגלה יהוה מפניהם ויעשׂו דברים רעים להכעיס את יהוה׃
17:12	ויעבדו הגללים אשׁר אמר יהוה להם לא תעשׂו את הדבר הזה׃
17:13	ויעד יהוה בישׂראל וביהודה ביד כל נביאו כל חזה לאמר שׁבו מדרכיכם הרעים ושׁמרו מצותי חקותי ככל התורה אשׁר צויתי את אבתיכם ואשׁר שׁלחתי אליכם ביד עבדי הנביאים׃
17:14	ולא שׁמעו ויקשׁו את ערפם כערף אבותם אשׁר לא האמינו ביהוה אלהיהם׃
17:15	וימאסו את חקיו ואת בריתו אשׁר כרת את אבותם ואת עדותיו אשׁר העיד בם וילכו אחרי ההבל ויהבלו ואחרי הגוים אשׁר סביבתם אשׁר צוה יהוה אתם לבלתי עשׂות׃
17:16	ויעזבו את כל מצות יהוה אלהיהם ויעשׂו להם מסכה שׁנים עגלים ויעשׂו אשׁירה וישׁתחוו לכל צבא השׁמים ויעבדו את הבעל׃
17:17	ויעבירו את בניהם ואת בנותיהם באשׁ ויקסמו קסמים וינחשׁו ויתמכרו לעשׂות הרע בעיני יהוה להכעיסו׃
17:18	ויתאנף יהוה מאד בישׂראל ויסרם מעל פניו לא נשׁאר רק שׁבט יהודה לבדו׃
17:19	גם יהודה לא שׁמר את מצות יהוה אלהיהם וילכו בחקות ישׂראל אשׁר עשׂו׃
17:20	וימאס יהוה בכל זרע ישׂראל ויענם ויתנם ביד שׁסים עד אשׁר השׁליכם מפניו׃
17:21	כי קרע ישׂראל מעל בית דוד וימליכו את ירבעם בן נבט וידא ירבעם את ישׂראל מאחרי יהוה והחטיאם חטאה גדולה׃
17:22	וילכו בני ישׂראל בכל חטאות ירבעם אשׁר עשׂה לא סרו ממנה׃
17:23	עד אשׁר הסיר יהוה את ישׂראל מעל פניו כאשׁר דבר ביד כל עבדיו הנביאים ויגל ישׂראל מעל אדמתו אשׁורה עד היום הזה׃
17:24	ויבא מלך אשׁור מבבל ומכותה ומעוא ומחמת וספרוים וישׁב בערי שׁמרון תחת בני ישׂראל וירשׁו את שׁמרון וישׁבו בעריה׃
17:25	ויהי בתחלת שׁבתם שׁם לא יראו את יהוה וישׁלח יהוה בהם את האריות ויהיו הרגים׃
17:26	ויאמרו למלך אשׁור לאמר הגוים אשׁר הגלית ותושׁב בערי שׁמרון לא ידעו את משׁפט אלהי הארץ וישׁלח בם את האריות והנם ממיתים אותם כאשׁר אינם ידעים את משׁפט אלהי הארץ׃
17:27	ויצו מלך אשׁור לאמר הליכו שׁמה אחד מהכהנים אשׁר הגליתם משׁם וילכו וישׁבו שׁם וירם את משׁפט אלהי הארץ׃
17:28	ויבא אחד מהכהנים אשׁר הגלו משׁמרון וישׁב בבית אל ויהי מורה אתם איך ייראו את יהוה׃
17:29	ויהיו עשׂים גוי גוי אלהיו ויניחו בבית הבמות אשׁר עשׂו השׁמרנים גוי גוי בעריהם אשׁר הם ישׁבים שׁם׃
17:30	ואנשׁי בבל עשׂו את סכות בנות ואנשׁי כות עשׂו את נרגל ואנשׁי חמת עשׂו את אשׁימא׃
17:31	והעוים עשׂו נבחז ואת תרתק והספרוים שׂרפים את בניהם באשׁ לאדרמלך וענמלך אלה ספרים׃
17:32	ויהיו יראים את יהוה ויעשׂו להם מקצותם כהני במות ויהיו עשׂים להם בבית הבמות׃
17:33	את יהוה היו יראים ואת אלהיהם היו עבדים כמשׁפט הגוים אשׁר הגלו אתם משׁם׃
17:34	עד היום הזה הם עשׂים כמשׁפטים הראשׁנים אינם יראים את יהוה ואינם עשׂים כחקתם וכמשׁפטם וכתורה וכמצוה אשׁר צוה יהוה את בני יעקב אשׁר שׂם שׁמו ישׂראל׃
17:35	ויכרת יהוה אתם ברית ויצום לאמר לא תיראו אלהים אחרים ולא תשׁתחוו להם ולא תעבדום ולא תזבחו׃
17:36	כי אם את יהוה אשׁר העלה אתכם מארץ מצרים בכח גדול ובזרוע נטויה אתו תיראו ולו תשׁתחוו ולו תזבחו׃
17:37	ואת החקים ואת המשׁפטים והתורה והמצוה אשׁר כתב לכם תשׁמרון לעשׂות כל הימים ולא תיראו אלהים אחרים׃
17:38	והברית אשׁר כרתי אתכם לא תשׁכחו ולא תיראו אלהים אחרים׃
17:39	כי אם את יהוה אלהיכם תיראו והוא יציל אתכם מיד כל איביכם׃
17:40	ולא שׁמעו כי אם כמשׁפטם הראשׁון הם עשׂים׃
17:41	ויהיו הגוים האלה יראים את יהוה ואת פסיליהם היו עבדים גם בניהם ובני בניהם כאשׁר עשׂו אבתם הם עשׂים עד היום הזה׃


17:1	In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah reigned hath Hoshea son of Elah in Samaria, over Israel -- nine years,
17:2	and he doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, only, not as the kings of Israel who were before him;
17:3	against him came up Shalmaneser king of Asshur, and Hoshea is to him a servant, and doth render to him a present.
17:4	And the king of Asshur findeth in Hoshea a conspiracy, in that he hath sent messengers unto So king of Egypt, and hath not caused a present to go up to the king of Asshur, as year by year, and the king of Asshur restraineth him, and bindeth him in a house of restraint.
17:5	And the king of Asshur goeth up into all the land, and he goeth up to Samaria, and layeth siege against it three years;
17:6	in the ninth year of Hoshea hath the king of Asshur captured Samaria, and removeth Israel to Asshur, and causeth them to dwell in Halah, and in Habor, `by' the river Gozan, and `in' the cities of the Medes.
17:7	And it cometh to pass, because the sons of Israel have sinned against Jehovah their God -- who bringeth them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt -- and fear other gods,
17:8	and walk in the statutes of the nations that Jehovah dispossessed from the presence of the sons of Israel, and of the kings of Israel that they made;
17:9	and the sons of Israel do covertly things that `are' not right against Jehovah their God, and build for them high places in all their cities, from a tower of the watchers unto the fenced city,
17:10	and set up for them standing-pillars and shrines on every high height, and under every green tree,
17:11	and make perfume there in all high places, like the nations that Jehovah removed from their presence, and do evil things to provoke Jehovah,
17:12	and serve the idols, of which Jehovah said to them, `Ye do not do this thing;'
17:13	And Jehovah testifieth against Israel, and against Judah, by the hand of every prophet, and every seer, saying, `Turn back from your evil ways, and keep My commands, My statutes, according to all the law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent unto you by the hand of My servants the prophets;'
17:14	and they have not hearkened, and harden their neck, like the neck of their fathers, who did not remain stedfast in Jehovah their God,
17:15	and reject His statutes and His covenant that He made with their fathers, and His testimonies that He testified against them, and go after the vain thing, and become vain, and after the nations that are round about them, of whom Jehovah commanded them not to do like them;
17:16	And they forsake all the commands of Jehovah their God, and make to them a molten image -- two calves, and make a shrine, and bow themselves to all the host of the heavens, and serve Baal,
17:17	and cause their sons and their daughters to pass over through fire, and divine divinations, and use enchantments, and sell themselves to do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, to provoke Him;
17:18	That Jehovah sheweth himself very angry against Israel, and turneth them aside from His presence; none hath been left, only the tribe of Judah by itself.
17:19	Also Judah hath not kept the commands of Jehovah their God, and they walk in the statutes of Israel that they had made.
17:20	And Jehovah kicketh against all the seed of Israel, and afflicteth them, and giveth them into the hand of spoilers, till that He hath cast them out of His presence,
17:21	for He hath rent Israel from the house of David, and they make Jeroboam son of Nebat king, and Jeroboam driveth Israel from after Jehovah, and hath caused them to sin a great sin,
17:22	and the sons of Israel walk in all the sins of Jeroboam that he did, they have not turned aside therefrom,
17:23	till that Jehovah hath turned Israel aside from His presence, as He spake by the hand of all His servants the prophets, and Israel is removed from off its land to Asshur, unto this day.
17:24	And the king of Asshur bringeth in from Babylon and from Cutha, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and causeth `them' to dwell in the cities of Samaria instead of the sons of Israel, and they possess Samaria, and dwell in its cities;
17:25	and it cometh to pass, at the commencement of their dwelling there, they have not feared Jehovah, and Jehovah doth send among them the lions, and they are destroying among them.
17:26	And they speak to the king of Asshur, saying, `The nations that thou hast removed, and dost place in the cities of Samaria, have not known the custom of the God of the land, and He sendeth among them the lions, and lo, they are destroying them, as they do not know the custom of the God of the land.'
17:27	And the king of Asshur commandeth, saying, `Cause to go thither one of the priests whom ye removed thence, and they go and dwell there, and he doth teach them the custom of the God of the land.'
17:28	And one of the priests whom they removed from Samaria cometh in, and dwelleth in Beth-El, and he is teaching them how they do fear Jehovah,
17:29	and they are making each nation its gods, and place `them' in the houses of the high places that the Samaritans have made, each nation in their cities where they are dwelling.
17:30	And the men of Babylon have made Succoth-Benoth, and the men of Cuth have made Nergal, and the men of Hamath have made Ashima,
17:31	and the Avites have made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites are burning their sons with fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, gods of Sepharvim.
17:32	And they are fearing Jehovah, and make to themselves from their extremities priests of high places, and they are acting for them in the house of the high places.
17:33	Jehovah they are fearing, and their gods they are serving, according to the custom of the nations whence they removed them.
17:34	Unto this day they are doing according to the former customs -- they are not fearing Jehovah, and are not doing according to their statutes, and according to their ordinances, and according to the law, and according to the command, that Jehovah commanded the sons of Jacob whose name He made Israel,
17:35	and Jehovah maketh with them a covenant, and chargeth them, saying, `Ye do not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them,
17:36	but Jehovah who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a stretched-out arm, Him ye do fear, and to Him ye bow yourselves, and to Him ye do sacrifice;
17:37	and the statutes, and the judgments, and the law, and the command, that He wrote for you, ye observe to do all the days, and ye do not fear other gods;
17:38	and the covenant that I have made with you ye do not forget, and ye do not fear other gods;
17:39	but Jehovah your God ye do fear, and He doth deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies;'
17:40	and they have not hearkened, but according to their former custom they are doing,
17:41	and these nations are fearing Jehovah, and their graven images they have served, both their sons and their sons' sons; as their fathers did, they are doing unto this day.
