| 4:1 | When Mardocheus perceaued all that was done, he rente his clothes and put on sack cloth, with asshes, and went out into the myddes of the cytie, and cryed loud and lamentably, |
| 4:2 | & came before the kynges gate: but he myght not entre within the kynges gate, because he had sack cloth on. |
| 4:3 | And in all landes, countrees, & places, as farre as the kynges worde and commaundment extended, there was greate lamentacion among the Iewes, fasting, weping, and mourning, and many laye in sack clothes & in asshes. |
| 4:4 | So Esthers damosels and her chamberlaynes, came & told it her. Then was the quene exceadyngly astonnied. And she sent rayment, that Mardocheus shulde put on, and laye the sack cloth from him. But Mardocheus wold not take them. |
| 4:5 | Then called Esther Hathath one of the kynges chamberlaynes (whych stode before her) and gaue him a commaundment vnto Mardocheus, that he might knowe what it were, wherfore he dyd so. |
| 4:6 | So Hathat went forth to Mardocheus vnto the strete of the cytie, whych was before the kynges gate. |
| 4:7 | And Mardocheus tolde him of all that had happened vnto him, and of the summe of syluer that Haman had promised to weye downe into the kynges treasury, because of the Iewes yf he wolde destroye them |
| 4:8 | (& he gaue hym the copye of the kynges commaundement, that was deuysed at Susan, to destroye them, that he might shewe it vnto Esther) and to speake to her, and charge her, that she shuld go into the kyng, and make her prayer and supplicacion vnto him for her people. |
| 4:9 | And when Hathath came in, he told Esther the wordes of Mardocheus. |
| 4:10 | And agayne, Esther spake vnto Hathath, & commaunded him to saye vnto Mardocheus: |
| 4:11 | all the kynges seruauntes, & the people in the landes of the kynge, knowe that whosoeuer commeth within the court vnto the kyng, whether it be man or woman, whych is not called, the commaundment is, that the same shall dye, excepte the kynge holde out the golden scepter vnto him for then he shall lyue. As for me, I haue not bene called to come into the kyng now this thyrtie dayes. |
| 4:12 | And they certifyed Mardocheus of Esthers wordes, |
| 4:13 | & Mardocheus bad saye agayne vnto Esther, thynke not to saue thyne awne lyfe, while thou art in the kynges house, before all Iewes: |
| 4:14 | for yf thou holdest thy peace at this tyme, then shall the Iewes haue helpe and deliueraunce out of another place, & thou & thy fathers house shalbe destroyed. And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kyngdom, for this causes sake? |
| 4:15 | Esther had them geue Mardocheus this answer: |
| 4:16 | Go thou thy waye, and gether together all the Iewes that are found at Susan, and fast ye for me, that ye eat not and drynke not in thre dayes, nether daye nor nyght. I and my damosels will fast lykewise, and so will I go into the kyng, which thing yet, is contrary to the commaundment: and yf I perishe, I perishe. |
| 4:17 | So Mardocheus went his waye, & dyd all that Esther had commaunded him. |
| 4:1 | And whanne Mardochee hadde herd these thingis, he to-rente hise clothis, and he was clothid in a sak, and spreynt aische on the heed, and he criede with greet vois in the street of the myddis of the citee, and schewide the bitternesse of his soule, |
| 4:2 | and he yede with this yellyng `til to the yatis of the paleis; for it was not leueful a man clothid with a sak to entre in to the halle of the kyng. |
| 4:3 | Also in alle prouynces, citees, and places, to which the cruel sentence of the king was comun, was greet weilyng, fastyng, yellyng, and wepyng anentis the Jewis, and many Jewis vsiden sak and aische for bed. |
| 4:4 | Sotheli the dameselis and onest seruauntis and chast of Hester entriden, and telden to hir; which thing sche herde, and was astonyed; and sche sente a cloth to Mardochee, that whanne the sak was takun a wei, he schulde clothe hym therynne; which cloth he nolde take. |
| 4:5 | And aftir that Athac, the onest seruaunt and chast, `was clepid, whom the kyng hadde youe a mynystre to hir, sche comaundide, that he schulde go to Mardochee, and lerne of hym, whi he dide this thing. |
| 4:6 | And Athac yede out, and yede to Mardochee stondynge in the street of the citee, bifor the dore of the paleis; |
| 4:7 | which schewide to Athac alle thingis that bifelden, hou Aaman hadde bihiyt to bryng siluer in to tresours of the kyng for the deeth of Jewis. |
| 4:8 | Also he yaf to Athac the copie of the comaundement, that hangide in Susa, to schewe to the queen, and to moneste hir for to entre to the kyng, and to biseche hym for hir puple. |
| 4:9 | And Athac yede ayen, and telde to Hester alle thingis, whiche Mardochee hadde seid. |
| 4:10 | And sche answeryde to hym, and seide, that he schulde seie to Mardochee, Alle the seruauntis of the kyng, |
| 4:11 | and alle prouyncis that ben vndur his lordschip, knowen, that whether a man ether a womman not clepid entrith in to the ynnere halle of the kyng, he schal be slayn anoon with outen ony tariyng, no but in hap the kyng holdith forth the goldun yerde `to hym for `the signe of merci, and he mai lyue so; therfor hou mai Y entre to the kyng, which am not clepid to hym now bi thritti daies? |
| 4:12 | And whanne Mardochee hadde herd `this thing, he sente efte to Hester, |
| 4:13 | and seide, Gesse thou not, that thou schalt delyuer oonli thi lijf, for thou art in the hows of the kyng, bifor alle Jewis; |
| 4:14 | for if thou art stille now, Jewis schulen be delyuered bi another occasioun, and thou and the hows of thi fadir schulen perische; and who knowith, whether herfor thou camist to the rewme, that thou schuldist be maad redi in sich a tyme? |
| 4:15 | And eft Hester sente these wordis to Mardochee, |
| 4:16 | Go thou, and gadere togidere alle Jewis, whiche thou fyndist in Susa, and preie ye for me; ete ye not, nether drynke ye in thre daies and thre nyytis, and Y with myn handmaydis schal fast in lijk maner; and thanne Y not clepid schal entre to the kyng, and Y schal do ayens the lawe, and Y schal bitake me to deth and to perel. |
| 4:17 | Therfor Mardochee yede, and dide alle thingis, whiche Hester hadde comaundid to hym. |

| 4:11 | All the kynges seruauntes, and the people in the londes of the kynge knowe, that who so euer commeth within the courte vnto ye kynge, whether it be man or woman, which is not called, the comaundement is that the same shal dye immediatly, excepte the kynge holde out the golde cepter vnto him, that he maye lyue. As for me, I haue not bene called to come in to the kynge now this thirtie dayes. |
| 4:12 | And wha Mardocheus was certified of Hesters wordes, |
| 4:13 | Mardocheus bad saie againe vnto Hester: Thynke not to saue thine awne life, whyle thou art in ye kynges house before all Iewes: |
| 4:14 | for yf thou holdest thy peace at this tyme, then shal the Iewes haue helpe and delyueraunce out of another place, & thou & thy fathers house shalbe destroyed. And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kyngdome, for this tymes sake? |
| 4:15 | Hester bad geue Mardocheus this answere: |
| 4:16 | Go thou yi waye then, & gather together all ye Iewes yt are founde at Susan, & fast ye for me, yt ye eate not & drynke not in thre dayes, nether daye ner nighte. I & my damsels wil fast likewyse, & so wyl I go into the kynge cotrary to the comaundement: yf I perishe, I perishe. |
