| 20:1 | Then answered Sophar the Naamathite, and sayde. |
| 20:2 | For the same cause do my thoughtes compell me to answere. And why? my mynde is ready within me. |
| 20:3 | I haue sufficiently herde thy checking and reprofe, therfore am I purposed to make answere after myne vnderstandynge. |
| 20:4 | Knowest thou not this, namely: that from the begynnyng (euer sence the creacion of man vpon earth) |
| 20:5 | the gladnes of the vngodly hath bene shorte, and that the ioye of ypocrites continued but the twyncklynge of an eye? |
| 20:6 | Though he be magnified vp to the heauen, so that his head reacheth vnto the cloudes: |
| 20:7 | yet at a turne he perisheth for euer. Insomoch that they which haue sene hym, shall saye. Where is he? |
| 20:8 | He shall vanysh as a dreame, so that he can no more be founde, and shall passe awaye as a vision in the nyght. |
| 20:9 | So that the eye which sawe hym before, shall haue nomore syght of hym, and hys place shall knowe hym nomore. |
| 20:10 | Hys chyldren shall be fayne to agree with the poore, and his handes shall restore them their goodes. |
| 20:11 | From his youth his bones are full of pleasures, but now shall it lye downe within him in the earth. |
| 20:12 | When wyckednesse, was swete in his mouth, he hid it vnder hys tonge. |
| 20:13 | That he fauoured, that wolde he not forsake, but kepte it close in his throte. |
| 20:14 | The breade that he dyd eate, is turned to the poyson of serpentes, within his body. |
| 20:15 | The ryches that he deuoured, shall he perbrake agayne, for God shall drawe them out of his bely, |
| 20:16 | he shal sucke the gall of serpentes, and the adders tonge shall slaye hym: |
| 20:17 | so that he shall nomore se the ryuers and brokes of hony and butter. |
| 20:18 | The thing that other men haue laboured for, shall he restore agayne, and shall not eate it vp. Greate trauayle shall he make for ryches, but he shall not enioye them. |
| 20:19 | And why? he hath oppressed the poore, & not helped them: houses hath he spoyled, & not buylded them. |
| 20:20 | His bely coulde neuer be fylled, therfore shall he perishe in hys coueteousnesse. |
| 20:21 | There shall none of hys meats be left behinde, therfore shall no man loke for hys prosperite. |
| 20:22 | Whan he had plenteousnesse of euery thynge, yet was he poore, though he was helped on euery syde. |
| 20:23 | For though the wycked haue neuer somoch to fyll his bely, yet God shall sende his wrath vpon him, and cause his indignacyon to raygne ouer him: |
| 20:24 | so that yf he fle the yron weapens, he shall be shott wt the stele bowe. |
| 20:25 | The arowe is taken forth, and gone out of the quyuer, & a glystering sweard thorowe the gall of him, feare shall come vpon hym. |
| 20:26 | There shall no darcknes be able to hyde him An vnkyndled fyre shall consume him, and loke what remayneth in hys house, it shall be destroyed. |
| 20:27 | The heauen shall declare hys wyckednesse, and the earth shall take parte agaynst him. |
| 20:28 | The substaunce that he hath in hys house, shalbe taken awaye and peryshe in the daye of the Lordes wrath. |
| 20:29 | This is the porcyon that the wycked man shall haue of God, and the herytage that he maye loke for of God. because of his wordes. |

| 20:2 | Therfor my thouytis dyuerse comen oon aftir anothir; and the mynde is rauyischid in to dyuerse thingis. |
| 20:3 | Y schal here the techyng, bi which thou repreuest me; and the spirit of myn vndurstondyng schal answere me. |
| 20:4 | Y woot this fro the bigynnyng, sithen man was set on erthe, |
| 20:5 | that the preisyng of wickid men is schort, and the ioie of an ypocrite is at the licnesse of a poynt. |
| 20:6 | Thouy his pride `stieth in to heuene, and his heed touchith the cloudis, |
| 20:7 | he schal be lost in the ende, as a dunghil; and, thei that sien hym, schulen seie, Where is he? |
| 20:8 | As a dreem fleynge awei he schal not be foundun; he schal passe as `a nyytis siyt. |
| 20:9 | The iye that siy hym schal not se; and his place schal no more biholde him. |
| 20:10 | Hise sones schulen be `al to-brokun with nedynesse; and hise hondis schulen yelde to hym his sorewe. |
| 20:11 | Hise boonys schulen be fillid with the vices of his yong wexynge age; and schulen slepe with hym in dust. |
| 20:12 | For whanne yuel was swete in his mouth, he hidde it vndur his tunge. |
| 20:13 | He schal spare it, and schal not forsake it; and schal hide in his throte. |
| 20:14 | His breed in his wombe schal be turned in to galle of snakis withynne. |
| 20:15 | He schal spue out the richessis, whiche he deuouride; and God schal drawe tho ritchessis out of his wombe. |
| 20:16 | He schal souke the heed of snakis; and the tunge of an addre schal sle hym. |
| 20:17 | Se he not the stremys of the flood of the stronde, of hony, and of botere. |
| 20:18 | He schal suffre peyne for alle thingis whiche he hath do, netheles he schal not be wastid; aftir the multitude of his fyndyngis, so and `he schal suffre. |
| 20:19 | For he brake, and made nakid the hows of a pore man; he rauyschide, and bildide it not. |
| 20:20 | And his wombe was not fillid; and whanne he hath that, that he couetide, he may not holde in possessioun. |
| 20:21 | `No thing lefte of his mete; and therfor no thing schal dwelle of his goodis. |
| 20:22 | Whanne he is fillid, he schal be maad streit; he schal `be hoot, and alle sorewe schal falle in on hym. |
| 20:23 | `Y wolde, that his wombe be fillid, that he sende out in to hym the ire of his strong veniaunce, and reyne his batel on hym. |
| 20:24 | He schal fle yrun armuris, and he schal falle in to a brasun boowe. |
| 20:25 | Led out, and goynge out `of his schethe, and schynynge, `ether smytinge with leit, `in to his bittirnesse; orrible fendis schulen go, and schulen come on hym. |
| 20:26 | Alle derknessis ben hid in hise priuytees; fier, which is not teendid, schal deuoure hym; he schal be turmentid left in his tabernacle. |
| 20:27 | Heuenes schulen schewe his wickidnesse; and erthe schal rise togidere ayens hym. |
| 20:28 | The seed of his hows schal be opyn; it schal be drawun doun in the dai of the strong veniaunce of the Lord. |
| 20:29 | This is the part of a wickid man, `which part is youun of God, and the eritage of hise wordis of the Lord. |

| 20:5 | the prayse of the vngodly hath bene shorte, and that the ioye of Ypocrytes continued but ye twincklinge of an eye? |
| 20:6 | Though he be magnified vp to the heaue, so that his heade reacheth vnto the cloudes: |
| 20:7 | yet he perisheth at the last like donge: In so moch yt they which haue sene him, saye: Where is he? |
| 20:8 | He vanysheth as a dreame, so that he can nomore be founde, & passeth awaye as a vision in ye night. |
| 20:9 | So that the eye which sawe him before, getteth now no sight of him, & his place knoweth him nomore. |
| 20:10 | His childre go a begginge, their handes bringe the to sorow and heuynesse. |
| 20:11 | From his youth his bones are ful of vyce, which shal lie downe wt him in ye earth. |
| 20:12 | Whe wickednesse is swete in his mouth, he hydeth it vnder his tonge. |
| 20:13 | That he fauoureth, that wyll he not forsake, but kepeth it close in his throte. |
| 20:14 | The meate that he eateth, shalbe turned to the poyson of serpetes within his body. |
| 20:15 | The riches yt he deuoureth, shall he perbreake agayne, for God shal drawe them out of his bely. |
| 20:16 | The serpentes heade shall sucke him, and the adders tonge shall slaye him: |
| 20:17 | so that he shal nomore se the ryuers and brokes of hony and butter: |
| 20:18 | But laboure shal he, & yet haue nothinge to eate. Greate trauayle shal he make for riches, but he shal not enioye them. |
| 20:19 | And why? he hath oppressed the poore, and not helped them: houses hath he spoyled, and not buylded them. |
| 20:20 | His bely coude neuer be fylled, therfore shall he perish in his couetousnesse. |
| 20:21 | He deuoured so gredely, yt he left nothinge behynde, therfore his goodes shal not prospere. |
| 20:22 | Though he had plenteousnesse of euerythinge, yet was he poore, & therfore he is but a wretch on euery syde. |
| 20:23 | For though ye wicked haue neuer so moch to fyll his bely, yet God shal sende his wrath vpon him, and cause his battayll to rayne ouer him: |
| 20:24 | so that yf he fle the yron weapens, he shall be shott with the stele bowe. |
| 20:25 | The arowe shal be taken forth, & go out at his backe, and a glisteringe swearde thorow ye gall of him, feare shal come vpo him. |
| 20:26 | There shal no darcknes be able to hyde him. An vnkyndled fyre shal consume him, and loke what remayneth in his house, it shall be destroyed. |
| 20:27 | The heauen shall declare his wickednesse, & the earth shal take parte agaynst him. |
| 20:28 | The substaunce that he hath in his house, shalbe taken awaye and perish, in the daye of the LORDES wrath. |
| 20:29 | This is the porcion that ye wicked shal haue of God, and the heretage that he maye loke for of the LORDE. |
