38:1Then answered the Lorde vnto Iob out of the storme, and sayd:
38:2what is he that hydeth his mynde with folysh wordes?
38:3Gyrde vp thy loynes lyke a man, for I wyll questyon wyth the, se thou geue me a directe answere.
38:4Where wast thou, when I layde the foundacyons of the earth? Tell playnely, yf thou hast vnderstandyng.
38:5Who hath measured it, knowest thou? Or, who hath spreade the lyne vpon it?
38:6Where vpon stande the pyllers of it? Or, who layed the corner stone therof?
38:7Where wast thou, when the mornyng starres praysed me together, and all the chyldren of God reioysed triumphantly?
38:8Who shut the see wyth dores, when it brake forth as a chylde out of hys mothers wombe?
38:9When I made the cloudes to be a coueryng for it, and swadled it with the darcke?
38:10when I gaue it my commaundement, makyng dores and barres for it,
38:11saying: Hyther to shalt thou come, but no farther, & here shalt thou laye downe thy proud and hye waues.
38:12Hast thou geuen the mornynge hys charge (as sone as thou wast borne) and shewed the daye spryng hys place,
38:13that it myght take holde of the corners of the earth, and that the vngodly myght be shaken out?
38:14Theyr tokens and weapens are turned lyke claye, and sett vp agayne as the chaungyng of a garment.
38:15The vngodly shalbe disapoynted of their lyght, and the arme of the proude shalbe broken.
38:16Camest thou euer into the grounde of the see: or walkedest in the lowe corners of the depe?
38:17Haue the gates of deeth bene opened vnto the, or hast thou sene the dores of the shadowe of death?
38:18Hast thou also perceaued how broade the earth is? Yf thou hast knowledge of all thys,
38:19then shew me, where lyght dwelleth, and where darcknes is:
38:20that thou mayest brynge vs vnto theyr quarters, yf thou canst tell the waye to theyr houses.
38:21Knewest thou (afore thou wast borne) how olde thou shuldest be?
38:22Wentest thou euer into the treasuryes of the snowe, or hast thou sene the secrete places of the hayle,
38:23whych I haue prepared agaynst the tyme of trouble, agaynst the tyme of batell and warre?
38:24By what waye is the lyght parted, and into what lande breaketh the east wynde:
38:25Who deuydeth the aboundaunce of waters into ryuers, or who maketh a waye for the lyghtenyng and thonder,
38:26that it watereth & moystureth the drye and barengrounde:
38:27to make the grasse growe in places where no body dwelleth, and in the wyldernes where no man remayneth?
38:28Who is the father of rayne? Or who hath begotten the droppes of dewe?
38:29Out of whose wombe came the yse? Who hath gendred the coldnes of the ayre?
38:30that the waters are as harde as stones, and lye congeled aboue the depe.
38:31Wylt thou hyndre the swete influences of the .vij. starres? Or art thou able to breke the circle of heauen?
38:32Canst thou brynge forth the mornynge starre or the euenynge starre at conuenient tyme, & conueye them home agayne?
38:33Knowest thou the course of heauen, that thou mayest set vp the ordinaunce therof vpon the erth?
38:34Moreouer, canst thou lyft vp thy voyce to the cloudes, that they maye poore downe a greate rayne vpon the?
38:35Canst thou thondre also that they maye go theyr waye, and be obedient vnto the, sayeng: Lo here are we?
38:36Who geueth sure wysdome or stedfast vnderstandynge?
38:37who nombreth the cloudes in wysdome? who stylleth the vehement waters of the heauen?
38:38who turneth the clottes to dust, & then to be clottes agayne?
38:39Wylt thou hunt the praye from the lyon, or fede hys whelpes
38:40lying in theyr dennes, and lurkyng in theyr couches?
38:41who prouideth meate for the rauen, when hys yonge ones crye vnto God, and fle aboute for lack of meate?

 

38:1Forsothe the Lord answeride fro the whirlewynd to Joob,
38:2and seide, Who is this man, wlappynge sentences with vnwise wordis?
38:3Girde thou as a man thi leendis; Y schal axe thee, and answere thou to me.
38:4Where were thou, whanne Y settide the foundementis of erthe? schewe thou to me, if thou hast vndurstondyng.
38:5Who settide mesures therof, if thou knowist? ethir who stretchide forth a lyne theronne?
38:6On what thing ben the foundementis therof maad fast? ether who sente doun the corner stoon therof,
38:7whanne the morew sterris herieden me togidere, and alle the sones of God sungun ioyfuli?
38:8Who closide togidere the see with doris, whanne it brak out comynge forth as of the wombe?
38:9Whanne Y settide a cloude the hilyng therof, and Y wlappide it with derknesse, as with clothis of yong childhed.
38:10Y cumpasside it with my termes, and Y settide a barre, and doris;
38:11and Y seide, `Til hidur thou schalt come, and thou schalt not go forth ferthere; and here thou schalt breke togidere thi bolnynge wawis.
38:12Whethir aftir thi birthe thou comaundist to the bigynnyng of dai, and schewidist to the morewtid his place?
38:13Whethir thou heldist schakynge togidere the laste partis of erthe, and schakedist awei wickid men therfro?
38:14A seeling schal be restorid as cley, and it schal stonde as a cloth.
38:15The liyt of wickid men schal be takun awey fro hem, and an hiy arm schal be brokun.
38:16Whethir thou entridist in to the depthe of the see, and walkidist in the laste partis of the occian?
38:17Whether the yatis of deeth ben openyd to thee, and `siest thou the derk doris?
38:18Whethir thou hast biholde the brede of erthe? Schewe thou to me, if thou knowist alle thingis,
38:19in what weie the liyt dwellith, and which is the place of derknesse;
38:20that thou lede ech thing to hise termes, and thou vndurstonde the weies of his hows.
38:21Wistist thou thanne, that thou schuldist be borun, and knew thou the noumbre of thi daies?
38:22Whethir thou entridist in to the tresours of snow, ether biheldist thou the tresours of hail?
38:23whiche thingis Y made redy in to the tyme of an enemy, in to the dai of fiytyng and of batel.
38:24Bi what weie is the liyt spred abrood, heete is departid on erthe?
38:25Who yaf cours to the strongeste reyn,
38:26and weie of the thundur sownynge? That it schulde reyne on the erthe with out man in desert, where noon of deedli men dwellith?
38:27That it schulde fille a lond with out weie and desolat, and schulde brynge forth greene eerbis?
38:28Who is fadir of reyn, ether who gendride the dropis of deew?
38:29Of whos wombe yede out iys, and who gendride frost fro heuene?
38:30Watris ben maad hard in the licnesse of stoon, and the ouer part of occian is streyned togidere.
38:31Whether thou schalt mowe ioyne togidere schynynge sterris Pliades, ethir thou schalt mowe distrie the cumpas of Arturis?
38:32Whether thou bryngist forth Lucifer, `that is, dai sterre, in his tyme, and makist euene sterre to rise on the sones of erthe?
38:33Whether thou knowist the ordre of heuene, and schalt sette the resoun therof in erthe?
38:34Whethir thou schalt reise thi vois in to a cloude, and the fersnesse of watris schal hile thee?
38:35Whethir thou schalt sende leitis, and tho schulen go, and tho schulen turne ayen, and schulen seie to thee, We ben present?
38:36Who puttide wisdoom in the entrailis of man, ethir who yaf vndurstondyng to the cok?
38:37Who schal telle out the resoun of heuenes, and who schal make acordyng of heuene to sleep?
38:38Whanne dust was foundid in the erthe, and clottis weren ioyned togidere?
38:39Whether thou schalt take prey to the lionesse, and schalt fille the soulis of hir whelpis,
38:40whanne tho liggen in caues, and aspien in dennes?
38:41Who makith redi for the crowe his mete, whanne hise briddis crien to God, and wandren aboute, for tho han not meetis?

38:4Where wast thou, when I layed ye foundacions of the earth? Tell planely yff thou hast vnderstondinge.
38:5Who hath measured it, knowest thou? Or, who hath spred ye lyne vpon it?
38:6Where vpon stode the pilers of it? Or, who layed ye corner stone?
38:7where wast thou when the mornynge starres gaue me prayse, ad when all the angels of God reioysed?
38:8Who shutt the see with dores, when it brake forth as a childe out off his mothers wombe?
38:9When I made the cloudes to be a coueringe for it, and swedled it with ye darcke?
38:10when I gaue it my comaundement, makynge dores & barres for it,
38:11sayenge: Hither to shalt thou come, but no further, and here shalt thou laye downe thy proude and hye wawes.
38:12Hast thou geue the mornynge his charge (as soone as thou wast borne) and shewed the dayespringe his place,
38:13yt it might take holde of the corners of the earth, & yt the vngodly might be shake out?
38:14Their tokes & weapes hast thou turned like claye, & set the vp agayne as the chaunginge of a garment.
38:15Yee thou hast spoyled the vngodly off their light, & broke the arme of the proude.
38:16Camest thou euer into the groude of the see, Or, hast thou walked in ye lowe corners of ye depe?
38:17Haue the gates of death bene opened vnto the or hast thou sene the dore of euerlastige treasure?
38:18Hast thou also perceaued, how brode ye earth is? Now yf thou hast knowlege of all,
38:19the shewe me where light dwelleth, and where darcknes is:
38:20yt thou mayest bringe vs vnto their quarters, yf thou cast tell the waye to their houses.
38:21Knewest thou (when thou wast borne) how olde thou shuldest be?
38:22Wentest thou euer in to the treasuries off the snowe, or hast thou sene ye secrete places of the hale:
38:23which I haue prepared agaynst the tyme of trouble, agaynst the tyme of batell & warre?
38:24By what waye is the light parted, & the heate dealt out vpon earth?
38:25Who deuydeth the abundauce of waters in to ryuers, or who maketh a waye for the stormy wether,
38:26yt it watereth & moystureth ye drye & baren grounde:
38:27to make the grasse growe in places where no body dwelleth, & in the wildernes where no ma remayneth?
38:28Who is the father of rayne? Or, who hath begotten the droppes of dew?
38:29Out of whose wobe came the yse? who hath gendred the coldnes of ye ayre?
38:30yt the waters are as harde as stones, & lye congeeled aboue the depe.
38:31Hast thou brought ye vij. starres together? Or, art thou able to breake the Circle of heaue?
38:32Cast thou bringe forth the mornynge starre or the euenynge starre at couenient tyme, & coueye the home agayne?
38:33Knowest thou the course off heaue, yt thou mayest set vp the ordinaunce therof vpo earth?
38:34Morouer, cast thou lift vp thy voyce to ye cloudes, yt they maye poure downe a greate rayne vpo the?
38:35Canst thou thodre also yt they maye go their waye, & be obediet vnto the, sayege: lo, here are we?
38:36Who geueth sure wisdome, or stedfast vnderstodinge?
38:37who nombreth the cloudes in wisdome? who stilleth ye vehement waters of the heaue?
38:38who turneth the clottes to dust, & the to be clottes agayne?
38:39Huntest thou the praye fro the Lyon, or fedest thou his whelpes
38:40lyege in their denes & lurkinge in their couches?
38:41who prouydeth meate for the rauen, whe his yonge ones crie vnto God, ad fle aboute for want of meate?
