Jeremiah - Chapter: 23


23:1	Wo be vnto the shepherdes, that destroye, and scatre my flocke, sayeth the Lorde.
23:2	Wherfore this is the commaundement of the Lorde God of Israel, vnto the shepeherdes that fede my people: Ye scatre & thrust out my flocke, & loke not vpon them. Therfore now wyll I vyset the wickednes of youre ymagynacions, sayeth the Lorde.
23:3	And wyll gather together the remnaunt of my flocke, from all landes that I had dryuen them vnto, and will brynge them agayne to their pastures, that they maye growe and increase.
23:4	I wyll set shepherdes also ouer them, which shall fede them. They shall nomore feare and drede, for there shall none of them be lost, saieth the Lorde.
23:5	Beholde, the tyme commeth, sayeth the Lorde, that I wyll rayse vp the ryghteous braunche of Dauid, which kynge shall beare rule, and he shall prosper with wysedome, & shall set vp equite & righteousnes agayne in the erth.
23:6	In this tyme shall Iuda be saued, and Israell shall dwell without feare. And this is the name that they shal call him: euen the Lorde oure ryghteousnesse.
23:7	And therfore beholde, the tyme commeth, sayeth the Lorde that it shall nomore be sayde: the Lorde lyueth, which brought the chyldren of Israell out of the lande of Egypte:
23:8	But the Lorde lyueth, which brought forth, and led the sede of the house of Israel, out of the North lande, and from all countrees where I had scatred them, and they shall dwell in their awne lande agayne.
23:9	My herte breaketh in my body because of the false prophetes, al my bones shake: I am become lyke a droncken man (that by the reason of wyne can take no rest) for verye feare of the Lorde, and of his holy wordes:
23:10	Because the lande is full of aduouterers & thorowe swering it mourneth & the pleasaunt pastures of the deserte are dryed vp. Yee, the waye that men take, is wicked, and theyr gouernaunce is nothinge lyke the holy worde of the Lorde.
23:11	For prophetes and the prestes them selues are polluted ypocrites, and theyr wyckednes haue I founde in my house, saieth the Lorde.
23:12	Wherfore, their way shall be slyppery in the darcknesse, where in they maye stacker & fall. For I wyll bryng a plage vpon them, euen the yeare of theyr visitacion saieth the Lorde.
23:13	I haue sene foly amonge the Prophetes of Samaria, that they preached for Baall, and disceaued my people of Israell.
23:14	I haue sene also amonge the Prophetes of Ierusalem foule aduoutry, and presumpteous lyes. They take the most shamefull men by the hande, flattringe them, so that they cannot returne from theyr wyckednes. All these wt their cytesyns are vnto me, as Sodome, and as the inhabitours of Gomorre.
23:15	Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes concernynge the prophetes: Beholde, I will fede them with wormwod, and make them drincke the water of gall. For from the prophetes of Ierusalem is ypocrisye come into all the lande.
23:16	And therfore the Lorde of Hostes geueth you this warninge. Heare not the wordes of the prophetes, that preach vnto you, and disceaue you: surely they teache you vanyte for they speake the meanynge of their awne herte, & not out of the mouth of the Lorde.
23:17	They saye vnto them that despyse me: The Lorde hath spoken it: Tush: ye shal prospere ryght well. And vnto all them, that walcke after the lust of theyr awne hert, they saye: Tush, there shall no misfortune happen you.
23:18	For who hath sytten in the councell of the Lorde, that he hath herde & vnderstande, what he is aboute to do: Who hath marcked hys deuyce, and herde it?
23:19	Beholde, the stormy wether of the Lorde (that is, his indignacion) shall go forth, and a vyolent whirlwynde shall fal downe vpon the heade of the vngodly.
23:20	And the wrath of the Lorde shall not turne agayne, vntyll he perfourme and fulfyl the thought of hys herte. And in the latter dayes ye shall knowe his meanynge.
23:21	I haue not sent these prophetes (saieth the Lorde) & yet they ranne. I haue not spoken to them, and yet they preached.
23:22	But yf they had continued in my councell they had opened to my people my wordes & they had turned my people from their euell wayes & wycked ymagynacions.
23:23	Am I then God that seyth but the thinge, whiche is nye at hande, and not that is farre of? sayeth the Lorde.
23:24	Maye eny man hyde hym self so, that I shall not se hym? sayeth the Lorde. Do not I fulfyll heauen and earth? sayeth the Lorde.
23:25	I haue herde well ynough, what the prophetes saye that preache lyes in my name, sayeng: I haue dreamed, I haue dreamed.
23:26	How longe wyll this continue in the prophetes hert to tell lyes, and to preache the crafty sotylte of their awne hert?
23:27	Whose purpose is (with the dreames that euery one tell) to make my people forget my name, as theyr forefathers dyd, when Baall came vp.
23:28	The prophet that hath a dreame let hym tell it and he that vnderstandeth my worde, let hym shewe it faythfully. For what hath chaffe and wheate to do together? sayeth the Lorde.
23:29	Is not my worde lyke a fyre, sayeth the Lorde, and Lyke an hammer, that breaketh the harde stone.
23:30	Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde: beholde, I wyll vpon the prophetes, that steale my worde priuely from euery man:
23:31	Beholde, here am I (sayeth the Lorde) agaynst the prophetes, that make tunges tender to speake, & saye: The Lorde hath sayde it.
23:32	Beholde, here am I (sayeth the Lorde) agaynst those prophetes, that darre prophecy lyenge dreames, and disceaue my people with their vanyties, and myracles, whom I neuer sent, ner commaunded them. They shall do this people greate harme, sayeth the Lorde.
23:33	Yf this people, ether eny prophet or preste aske the and saye: what is the burthen of the Lorde? Thou shalt saye vnto them: what burthen? Therfore wyll I cast you fro me, (sayeth the Lorde) because ye your selues a
23:34	And the prophet, preste or people that vseth this terme (the burthen of the Lorde) hym wyll I viset, and his house also.
23:35	But thus shall ye saye, euery one to another, & euery man to his brother. What answere hath the Lord geuen? or what is the Lordes commaundement?
23:36	And as for the burthen of the Lorde, ye shal speake nomore of it: for euery mans awne worde is his burthen because ye haue altered the wordes of the lyuynge God the Lorde of Hostes our God.
23:37	Thus shall euery man saye to the Prophetes: what answere hath the Lorde geuen the? Or, what sayth the Lorde?
23:38	And not once to name the burthen of the Lorde. Therfore thus saieth the Lorde. For so moche as ye haue vsed thys terme (the burthen of the Lorde) where as I notwithstandynge sent vnto you, and forbade you to speake of the Lordes burthen.
23:39	Beholde therfore, I wyll repute you as a burthen, and will cast you out of my presence: yee, and the citie also, that I gaue you and your fathers:
23:40	and will bryng you to an euerlastinge confusion, and into soch a shame, as shall neuer be forgotten.


23:1	Wo to the scheepherdis, that scateren and to-drawen the floc of my lesewe, seith the Lord.
23:2	Therfor the Lord God of Israel seith these thingis to the scheepherdis, that feeden my puple, Ye han scaterid my floc, and han cast hem out, and han not visitid hem; lo! Y schal visite on you the malice of youre studies, seith the Lord.
23:3	And Y schal gadere togidere the remenauntis of my floc fro alle londis, to whiche Y schal caste hem out thidur; and Y schal turne hem to her feeldis, and thei schulen encreesse, and schulen be multiplied.
23:4	And Y schal reise schepherdis on hem, and thei schulen feede hem; thei schulen no more drede, and schulen not be aferd; and noon schal be souyt of the noumbre seith the Lord.
23:5	Lo! daies comen, seith the Lord, and Y schal reise a iust buriownyng to Dauid; and he schal regne a kyng, and he schal be wijs, and he schal make doom and riytfulnesse in erthe.
23:6	In tho daies Juda schal be sauid, and Israel schal dwelle tristili; and this is the name which thei schulen clepe hym, The Lord oure riytful.
23:7	For this thing lo! daies comen, seith the Lord, and thei schulen no more seie, The Lord lyueth, that ledde the sones of Israel out of the lond of Egipt;
23:8	but, The Lord lyueth, that ledde out, and brouyte the seed of the hous of Israel fro the lond of the north, and fro alle londis to whiche Y hadde cast hem out thidur; and thei schulen dwelle in her lond.
23:9	To the prophetis; Myn herte is contrit in the myddis of me, alle my boonys trembliden togidere; Y am maad as a man drunkun, and as a man weet of wyn, of the face of the Lord, and of the face of the hooli wordis of hym;
23:10	for the lond is fillid with auowteris. For the erthe mourenede of the face of cursyng; the feeldis of desert ben maad drie, the cours of hem is maad yuel, and her strengthe is vnlijk.
23:11	For whi the profete and the prest ben defoulid; and in myn hous, seith the Lord, Y foond the yuel of hem.
23:12	Therfor the weie of hem schal be as slidur in derknessis, for thei schulen be hurtlid, and schulen falle doun therynne; for Y schal bringe on hem yuels, the yeer of visitacioun of hem, seith the Lord.
23:13	And in the profetis of Samarie Y siy fonnednesse, and thei profesieden in Baal, and disseyueden my puple Israel.
23:14	And in the profetis of Jerusalem Y siy licnesse, auoutrie, and the weie of leesyng; and thei confortiden the hondis of the worste men, that ech man schulde not conuerte fro his malice; alle thei ben maad as Sodom to me, and alle the dwellers therof `ben maad as Gommorre.
23:15	Therfor the Lord of oostis seith these thingis to the prophetis, Lo! Y schal feed hem with wermod, and Y schal yyue drynke to hem with galle; for whi defoulyng is goen out of the profetis of Jerusalem on al the lond.
23:16	The Lord of oostis seith these thingis, Nyle ye here the wordis of profetis, that profesien to you, and disseyuen you; thei speken the visioun of her herte, not of the mouth of the Lord.
23:17	Thei seien to hem that blasfemen me, The Lord spak, Pees schal be to you; and thei seiden to ech man that goith in the schrewidnesse of his herte, Yuel schal not come on you.
23:18	For whi who is present in the councel of the Lord, and siy, and herde his word? who bihelde, and herde the word of hym?
23:19	Lo! the whirlewynd of the Lordis indignacioun schal go out, and tempest brekynge schal come on the heed of wickid men.
23:20	The strong veniaunce of the Lord schal not turne ayen, til that he do, and til that he fille the thouyt of his herte. In the laste daies ye schulen vndurstonde the councel of hym.
23:21	Y sente not the profetis, and thei runnen; Y spak not to hem, and thei profesieden.
23:22	If thei hadden stonde in my councel, and hadde maad knowun my wordis to my puple, forsothe Y hadde turned hem awei fro her yuel weie, and fro her worste thouytis.
23:23	Gessist thou, whether Y am God of niy, seith the Lord, and not God afer?
23:24	A man schal not be priuy in hid places, and Y schal not se hym, seith the Lord. Whether Y fille not heuene and erthe? seith the Lord.
23:25	Y herde what thingis the profetis seiden, profesiynge a leesyng in my name, and seiynge, Y dremede dremes.
23:26	Hou longe is this thing in the herte of profetis, profesiynge a leesyng, and profesiynge the disseite of her herte?
23:27	Whiche wolen make, that my puple foryete my name for the dremes of hem, which ech man tellith to his neiybore, as the fadris of hem foryaten my name for Baal.
23:28	A profete that hath a dreme, telle a dreem; and he that hath my word, speke verili my word. What is with chaffis to the wheete? seith the Lord.
23:29	Whether my wordis ben not as fier brennynge, seith the Lord, and as an hamer al to-brekynge a stoon?
23:30	Therfor lo! Y am redi to the profetis, seith the Lord, that stelen my wordis, ech man fro his neiybore.
23:31	Lo! Y to the profetis, seith the Lord, that taken her tungis, and seien, The Lord seith.
23:32	Lo! Y to the profetis, dremynge a leesyng, seith the Lord; which telden tho, and disseyueden my puple in her leesyng, and in her myraclis, whanne Y hadde not sente hem, nether hadde comaundide to hem; whiche profitiden no thing to this puple, seith the Lord.
23:33	Therfor if this puple, ether profete, ether prest, axith thee, and seith, What is the birthun of the Lord? thou schalt seie to hem, Ye ben the birthun, for Y schal caste you awei, seith the Lord;
23:34	and a profete, and a prest, and the puple, that seith, The birthun of the Lord, Y schal visite on that man, and on his hous.
23:35	Ye schulen seie these thingis, ech man to his neiybore, and to his brother, What answeride the Lord? and what spak the Lord?
23:36	For the birthun of the Lord schal no more be remembrid, and the word of ech man schal be birthun to hym; and ye han peruertid the wordis of lyuynge God, of the Lord of oostis, youre God.
23:37	Thou schalt seie these thingis to the profete, What answeride the Lord to thee? and what spak the Lord?
23:38	Forsothe if ye seien, The birthin of the Lord, for this thing the Lord seith these thingis, For ye seiden this word, The birthun of the Lord, and Y sente to you, and Y seide, Nyle ye seie, The birthun of the Lord; therfor lo!
23:39	Y schal take you awei, and schal bere, and Y schal forsake you, and the citee which Y yaf to you, and to youre fadris, fro my face.
23:40	And Y schal yyue you in to euerlastynge schenschipe, and in to euerlastynge sclaundir, that schal neuere be doon awei bi foryetyng.

23:6	In his tyme shall Iuda be saued, and Israel shal dwell with out feare. And this is the name that they shall call him: euen the LORDE oure rightuous maker.
23:7	And therfore beholde, the tyme commeth (saieth the LORDE) that it shall no more be sayde: the LORDE lyueth, which brought the children off Israel out of the londe of Egipte:
23:8	But the LORDE lyueth, which brought forth, ad led the sede of the house off Israel, out off the north londe, and from all countrees where I had scatred them, and they shal dwell in their owne londe agayne.

23:28	The prophet that hath a dreame, let him tell it: and he that vnderstondeth my worde, let him shewe it faithfully. For what hath chaffe and wheat to do together? saieth the LORDE.
