5:1 | Kynge Balthazar made a greate bancket to his thousand Lordes: with all these thousand he made great chere, |
5:2 | & when he was droncken with wyne, he commaunded to brynge hym the golden and syluer vessels, whiche his father Nabuchodonosor had taken oute of the temple at Ierusalem, that the king and hys lordes with hys quene and concubynes might drincke thereoute. |
5:3 | So they broughte the golden vessell, that was taken oute of the temple of the Lordes house at Ierusalem. Then the kynge and hys lordes with his quene & concubynes droncke oute of them. |
5:4 | They droncke wyne, and praysed theyr Idoles of golde, syluer, copper, yron woodde and stone. |
5:5 | In the very same houre there apeared fyngers, as it had bene of a mannes hande wrytynge, ryght ouer agaynst the candelstycke vpon the playne wall in the kynges palace, & the kynge sawe the palme of the hande that wrote. |
5:6 | Then chaunged the kynge hys countenaunce, and hys thoughtes troubled hym, so that the ioyntes of hys bodye shoke, and hys knees smote one against the other. |
5:7 | Wherfore the kynge cryed myghtelye, that they shulde brynge hym the charmers, Caldees and coniurers of deuyls. The kynge spake also to the wyse men of Babylon, and sayde: Who so can rede thys wrytynge, and shew me the playne meanyng therof, shalbe clothed wyth purple, haue a cheyne of golde aboute hys necke, and rule the thyrde parte of my kyngedome. |
5:8 | Vpon this, came al the kynges wyse men: but they coulde neyther reade the wrytynge, nor shewe the kinge what it signifyed. |
5:9 | Then was the kynge sore afrayed in so muche, that his colour chaunged, and his lordes were sore vexed. |
5:10 | So by reason of thys matter, that had happened to the kyng and his lordes, the quene wente vp her selfe into the banckethouse, and spake vnto the kynge, sayinge: O kyng, God saue thy lyfe for euer: Let not the thoughtes trouble the, and let not thy countenaunce be chaunged. |
5:11 | For why? there is a man in thy kingdome, that hath the spryte of the holy Goddes within him, as it was sene in thy fathers dayes. He hath vnderstandynge and wysdome like the Goddes. Yea the kynge Nabuchodonosor thy father made thys man chefe of the sothsayers, charmers, Caldees, and deuilconiurers, |
5:12 | because that suche an aboundaunt spryte knowledge & wysdome (to expound dreames, to open secretes, and to declare harde dowtes) was founde in hym: yea euen in Daniel whom the kynge named Balthazar. Let thys same Daniel be sente for, and he shall tell, what it meaneth. |
5:13 | Then was Daniel broughte before the kynge. So the kynge spake vnto Daniel, and sayde: Arte thou that Daniel, one of the presoners of Iuda, whome my father the kynge broughte oute of Iewry? |
5:14 | I haue heard speake of the, that thou haste the spryte of the holye Goddes, experience and vnderstandyng, and that there hath bene greate wysdome founde in the. |
5:15 | Now haue there ben brought me, wyse & conning charmers, to reade thys wrytyng, and to shewe me the meanynge thereof: But they coulde not tell me, what this matter sygnyfyed. |
5:16 | Then heard I saye, that thou canste expounde darcke thynges, and declare harde doutes. Well then, yf thou canst reade thys wrytynge, and shewe me the meanynge therof: thou shalte be clothed with purple, haue a cheyne of golde aboute thy necke, and rule the thyrde parte of my kyngdome. |
5:17 | Daniel aunswered, and sayde before the kynge. As for thy rewardes, kepe them to thy selfe, or geue thy ryche gyftes to another: yet not the lesse, I wyll rede the wrytynge vnto the kynge, and shewe hym the interpretacion therof. |
5:18 | O kynge, God the hyest gaue vnto Nabuchodonosor thy father, the dignite of a kynge with worshippe and honoure, |
5:19 | so that al people, kynredes and tunge stode in awe & feare of him, by reason of the hye estate, that he had lente him. For why, he slewe whom he wold: he smote, whom it pleased hym. Agayne, whom he wolde, he set vp: and whome he lyst, he put doune. |
5:20 | But because hys herte was so proude, and hys stomacke set so fast vnto wilfulnesse: he was deposed from hys kingly trone, & his magesty was taken from hym. |
5:21 | He was shote oute from amonge men, his herte was lyke a beastes herte, and hys dwellynge was wyth the wylde asses: he was fayne to eate grasse lyke an oxe, and hys body was wet with the dewe of the heauen: tyll he knewe, that the hyest had power vpon the kingdomes of men, and setteth ouer them, whome he lyst. |
5:22 | And thou hys sonne (O Balthazar) for al this, hast not submytted thyne herte, thoughe thou knewest all these thynges, |
5:23 | but hast magnyfyed thy selfe aboue the Lorde of heauen, so that the vessels of hys house were broughte before the, that thou, and thy Lordes, with thy quene and concubynes, myght drincke wyne thereoute: And hast praysed the Idoles of syluer and golde, copper and yron, of wode and stone: As for the God in whose hande consysteth thy breth and all thy wayes: thou haste not loaued hym. |
5:24 | Therfore is the palme of thys hande sente hyther from hym, to token vp thys writinge. |
5:25 | And thys is the scrypture, that is wryten vp: Mane, Thetel, Phares. |
5:26 | Nowe the interpretacyon of the thynge is thys: Mane, God hath nombred the kyngdome, and brought it to an ende: |
5:27 | Thetel, thou arte weyed in the balaunce and arte founde to lyghte: |
5:28 | Phares, thy kyngdome is delte in partes, and geuen to the Medes and Perses. |
5:29 | Then commaunded Balthazar, to clothe Daniel wyth purple, to hange a cheyne of golde aboute hys necke, and to make a proclamacyon concerning him: that he shulde be the ruler of the thyrde parte of hys kyngedome. |
5:30 | The very same nyghte was Balthazar the kynge of the Caldees slayne, |
5:31 | and Darius out of Medea toke in the kyngedome, beyng .lxij. yeare of age. |
5:1 | Kynge Balthazar made a great bancket to his thousand Lordes: with all these thousande he made great chere, |
5:2 | and when he was droncken with wyne commaunded to bring hym the golden and syluer vessels which hys father Nabuchodonosor had taken oute of the temple at Ierusalem: that the kynge & his Lordes with his quene and concubynes myght drincke therout. |
5:3 | So they brought the golden vessell, that was taken oute of the temple of the Lordes house at Ierusalem. Then the kynge and his Lordes with his quene and concubines droncke out of them. |
5:4 | They droncke wyne, and praysed theyr Idoles of golde, syluer, copper yron, wodde and stone. |
5:5 | In the very same houre there appeared fyngers, as it had bene of a mans hande writynge, ryght ouer agaynst the candelstycke vpon the playne wall in the kynges palace: & the kynge sawe the palme of the hande that wrote. |
5:6 | Then chaunged the kynge his countenaunce, and his thoughtes troubled hym, so that the ioyntes of his body shoke, and hys knees smote one agaynst the other. |
5:7 | Wherfore the kinge cried myghtely, that they shulde brynge hym the charmers. Caldees and coniurers of deuels. The kynge spake also to the wyse men of Babylon, and sayde: Who so can rede this writing, & shewe me the playne meaning therof: shalbe clothed with purple, haue a cheyne of golde aboute his necke, and rule the thyrde part of my kyngdome. |
5:8 | Upon this, came all the kinges wyse men: but they coulde nether reade the writynge, ner shewe the kinge what it signifyed. |
5:9 | Then was the kynge sore afrayed, in so moch, that hys coloure chaunged, and his Lordes were sore vexed. |
5:10 | So by reason of this matter, that had happened to the kynge & his Lordes, the quene went vp herselfe into the bancket house, and spake vnto the kinge, sayinge: O kyng, God saue thy lyfe for euer. Let not the thoughtes trouble the, and let not thy countenaunce be chaunged. |
5:11 | For why? there is a man in thy kyngdome, that hath the sprete of the holy goddes within him, as it was sene in thy fathers dayes. He hath vnderstandynge and wysdome lyke the goddes. Ye the kynge Nabuchodonosor thy father made this man chefe of the sothsayers, charmers, Caldees and readers of destines: |
5:12 | because that soche an aboundaunt sprete, knowledge & wysdome (to expounde dreames, to open secretes, and to declare harde dowtes) was founde in him: yee, euen in Daniel, whom the kyng named Balthasar. Let this same Daniel be sente for, and he shall tell, what it meaneth. |
5:13 | Then was Daniel brought before the kynge. So the kinge spake vnto Daniel, and sayde. Art thou that Daniel, one of the presoners of Iuda, whom my father the kynge brought out of Iewry? |
5:14 | I haue heard speake of the, that thou hast the sprete of the holy goddes, experience and vnderstandinge, and that there hath bene greate wysdome founde in the. |
5:15 | Nowe haue there bene brought me, wise & conninge charmers, to reade thys wryting and to shewe me the meanynge therof. But they coulde not tell me, what thys matter signifyed |
5:16 | Then hearde I saye, that thou canst expounde darcke thynges, and declare harde doutes. Well than, yf thou canst reade thys wrytynge, & shewe me the meanynge therof thou shalt be clothed wt purple, haue a cheyne of golde aboute thy necke, and rule the thyrd parte of my kyngdome. |
5:17 | Daniel answered, & sayde before the kyng: As for thy rewardes, kepe them to thy selfe, or geue thy ryche gyftes to another: yet not the lesse, I will rede the wryting vnto the kyng, & shewe him the interpretacyon therof |
5:18 | O kynge heare. God the hyest gaue vnto Nabuchodonosor thy father, the dignitie of a kyng with worshyppe & honour, |
5:19 | so that all people, kinreddes & tunges stode in awe and feare of hym, by reason of the hye estate, that he had lent hym. For why, he slewe whom he wolde: he smote, whom it pleased him. Agayne: whom he wolde, he set vp: and whom he lyst, he put downe. |
5:20 | But because his hert was so proude, and his stomack set so fast vnto wylfulnesse: he was deposed from his kyngly trone, & hys magesty was taken from hym. |
5:21 | He was shut out from amonge men, hys herte was lyke a beastes herte, and hys dwellynge was with the wylde asses: he was fayne to eate grasse lyke an oxe, & hys body was wet with the dewe of the heauen, tyll he knewe, that the hyest had power vpon the kyngdomes of men and setteth ouer them, whom he lyst. |
5:22 | And thou his sonne (O Balthazar) for all this, hast not submytted thyne herte, though thou knewest all these thinges: |
5:23 | but hast magnifyed thy selfe aboue the Lorde of heauen, so that the vessels of hys house were brought before the: that thou, and thy Lordes? with thy quene and concubynes, myght dryncke wyne therout. And hast praysed the Idoles of syluer and gold, copper and yron, of wodd and stone. As for the God in whose hande consysteth thy breth and all thy wayes: thou hast not loued hym. |
5:24 | Therfore is the palme of thys hande sent hyther from hym, to token vp this wryting. |
5:25 | And this is the scripture, that is written vp: Mane, Thetel, Phares. |
5:26 | Nowe the interpretacion of the thynge is this: Mane, God hath nombred the kyngdome, and brought it to an ende: |
5:27 | Thetel, thou art weyed in the balaunce, and art founde to lyght: |
5:28 | Phares, thy kyngdome it delt in partes, and geuen to the Medes and Perses. |
5:29 | Then commaunded Balthazar, to cloth Daniel wyth purple, to hange a cheyne of golde aboute hys necke, and to make a proclamacyon concernynge hym: that he shulde be the ruler of the thyrde parte of hys kyngdome. |
5:30 | The very same night was Balthazar the kynge of the Caldees slayne, |
5:31 | and Darius out of Medea toke in the kyngdome, beynge .lxii. yeare of age. |
5:1 | King Belshazzar made a great feast to a thousand of his princes, and dranke wine before the thousand. |
5:2 | And Belshazzar whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring him the golden and siluer vessels, which his father Nebuchad-nezzar had brought from the Temple in Ierusalem, that the King and his princes, his wiues, and his concubines might drinke therein. |
5:3 | Then were brought the golden vessels, that were taken out of the Temple of the Lords house at Ierusalem, and the King and his princes, his wiues and his concubines dranke in them. |
5:4 | They drunke wine and praysed the gods of golde, and of siluer, of brasse, of yron, of wood and of stone. |
5:5 | At the same houre appeared fingers of a mans hand, which wrote ouer against the candlesticke vpon the plaister of the wall of ye Kings palace, and the King sawe the palme of the hand that wrote. |
5:6 | Then the Kings countenance was changed, and his thoughtes troubled him, so that the ioynts of his loynes were loosed, and his knees smote one against the other. |
5:7 | Wherefore the King cryed loude, that they should bring the astrologians, the Caldeans and the soothsayers. And the King spake, and sayd to the wise men of Babel, Whosoeuer can reade this writing, and declare me the interpretation thereof, shalbe clothed with purple, and shall haue a chaine of golde about his necke, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdome. |
5:8 | Then came all the Kings wise men, but they could neither reade the writing, nor shewe the King the interpretation. |
5:9 | Then was King Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his princes were astonied. |
5:10 | Now the Queene by reason of the talke of the King, and his princes came into the banket house, and the Queene spake, and sayd, O King, liue for euer: let not thy thoughtes trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed. |
5:11 | There is a man in thy kingdome, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods, and in the dayes of thy father light and vnderstanding and wisdome like the wisdome of the gods, was found in him: whom the King Nebuchad-nezzar thy father, the King, I say, thy father, made chiefe of the enchanters, astrologians, Caldeans, and soothsayers, |
5:12 | Because a more excellent spirit, and knowledge, and vnderstanding (for hee did expound dreames, and declare hard sentences, and dissolued doubtes) were founde in him, euen in Daniel, whome the King named Belteshazzar: nowe let Daniel be called, and hee will declare the interpretation. |
5:13 | Then was Daniel brought before the King, and the King spake and sayd vnto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captiuitie of Iudah, whom my father the King brought out of Iewrie? |
5:14 | Now I haue heard of thee, that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and that light and vnderstanding and excellent wisdome is found in thee. |
5:15 | Now therefore, wisemen and astrologians haue bene brought before me, that they should reade this writing, and shewe me the interpretation thereof: but they could not declare the interpretation of the thing. |
5:16 | Then heard I of thee, that thou couldest shewe interpretations, and dissolue doutes: nowe if thou canst reade the writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with purple, and shalt haue a chaine of golde about thy necke, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdome. |
5:17 | Then Daniel answered, and sayd before the King, Keepe thy rewards to thy selfe, and giue thy giftes to another: yet I will reade the writing vnto the King, and shew him the interpretation. |
5:18 | O King, heare thou, The most high God gaue vnto Nebuchad-nezzar thy father a kingdome, and maiestie, and honour and glory. |
5:19 | And for the maiestie that he gaue him, all people, nations, and languages trembled, and feared before him: he put to death whom he would: he smote whome he would: whome he would he set vp, and whome he would he put downe. |
5:20 | But when his heart was puft vp, and his minde hardened in pride, hee was deposed from his kingly throne, and they tooke his honour from him. |
5:21 | And hee was driuen from the sonnes of men, and his heart was made like the beastes, and his dwelling was with the wilde asses: they fed him with grasse like oxen, and his body was wet with the dewe of the heauen, till he knewe, that the most high God bare rule ouer the kingdome of men, and that he appointeth ouer it, whomsoeuer he pleaseth. |
5:22 | And thou his sonne, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all these things, |
5:23 | But hast lift thy selfe vp against the Lord of heauen, and they haue brought the vessels of his House before thee, and thou and thy princes, thy wiues and thy concubines haue drunke wine in them, and thou hast praysed the gods of siluer and golde, of brasse, yron, wood and stone, which neither see, neither heare, nor vnderstand: and the God in whose hand thy breath is and all thy wayes, him hast thou not glorified. |
5:24 | Then was the palme of the hand sent from him, and hath written this writing. |
5:25 | And this is the writing that he hath written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL UPHARSIN. |
5:26 | This is the interpretation of the thing, MENE, God hath nombred thy kingdome, and hath finished it. |
5:27 | TEKEL, thou art wayed in the balance, and art found too light. |
5:28 | PERES, thy kingdome is deuided, and giuen to the Medes and Persians. |
5:29 | Then at the commandement of Belshazzar they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chaine of golde about his necke, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdome. |
5:30 | The same night was Belshazzar the King of the Caldeans slaine. |
5:31 | And Darius of the Medes tooke the kingdome, being threescore and two yeere olde. |
