Matthew - Chapter: 23

>
23:1Then spake Iesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
23:2Saying, The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses seate:
23:3All therefore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and doe, but doe not ye after their workes: for they say, and doe not.
23:4For they binde heauie burdens, and grieuous to be borne, and lay them on mens shoulders, but they themselues will not mooue them with one of their fingers.
23:5But all their workes they doe, for to be seene of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
23:6And loue the vppermost roomes at feasts, and the chiefe seats in the Synagogues,
23:7And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, euen Christ, and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call no man your father vpon the earth: for one is your father which is in heauen.
23:10Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, euen Christ.
23:11But hee that is greatest among you, shall be your seruant.
23:12And whosoeuer shall exalt himselfe, shall be abased: and he that shall humble himselfe, shall be exalted.
23:13But woe vnto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for yee shut vp the kingdom of heauen against men: For yee neither goe in your selues, neither suffer ye them that are entring, to goe in.
23:14Woe vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for yee deuoure widowes houses, and for a pretence make long prayer; therefore ye shall receiue the greater damnation.
23:15Woe vnto you Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites; for yee compasse Sea and land to make one Proselyte, and when hee is made, yee make him two fold more the childe of hell then your selues.
23:16Woe vnto you, yee blind guides, which say, Whosoeuer shall sweare by the Temple, it is nothing: but whosoeuer shal sweare by the gold of the Temple, he is a debter.
23:17Ye fooles and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the Temple that sanctifieth the gold?
23:18And whosoeuer shall sweare by the Altar, it is nothing: but whosoeuer sweareth by the gift that is vpon it, he is guiltie.
23:19Ye fooles and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the Altar that sanctifieth the gift?
23:20Who so therefore shall sweare by the Altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
23:21And who so shall sweare by the Temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
23:22And he that shall sweare by heauen, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23Woe vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for yee pay tithe of mint, and annise, and cummine, and haue omitted the weightier matters of the Law, iudgement, mercie and faith: these ought ye to haue done, and not to leaue the other vndone.
23:24Ye blind guides, which straine at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
23:25Woe vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for yee make cleane the outside of the cup, and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excesse.
23:26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may bee cleane also.
23:27Woe vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for yee are like vnto whited sepulchres, which indeed appeare beautifull outward, but are within full of dead mens bones, and of all vncleannesse.
23:28Euen so, yee also outwardly appeare righteous vnto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisie and iniquitie.
23:29Woe vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because ye build the tombes of the Prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
23:30And say, If wee had beene in the dayes of our fathers, wee would not haue bene partakers with them in the blood of the Prophets.
23:31Wherefore ye bee witnesses vnto your selues, that yee are the children of them which killed the Prophets.
23:32Fil ye vp then the measure of your fathers.
23:33Yee serpents, yee generation of vipers, How can yee escape the damnation of hell?
23:34Wherefore behold, I send vnto you Prophets, and wisemen, and Scribes, and some of them yee shall kill and crucifie, and some of them shall yee scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from citie to citie:
23:35That vpon you may come all the righteous blood shed vpon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, vnto the blood of Zacharias, sonne of Barachias, whom yee slew betweene the temple and the altar.
23:36Uerily I say vnto you, All these things shal come vpon this generation.
23:37O Hierusalem, Hierusalem, thou that killest the Prophets, and stonest them which are sent vnto thee, how often would I haue gathered thy children together, euen as a hen gathereth her chickens vnder her wings, and yee would not?
23:38Behold, your house is left vnto you desolate.
23:39For I say vnto you, yee shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that commeth in the Name of the Lord.

23:1Then spake Iesus to the multitudes, and to his disciples,
23:2Saying: The Scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moyses seate.
23:3All therfore, whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and do: but do not ye after their workes, for they say, and do not.
23:4Yea, they bynde together heauy burthens, and greeuous to be borne, and lay them on mens shoulders: but they them selues wyll not moue them with [one] of their fingers.
23:5All their workes they do, for to be sene of men: They make broade their philacteries, and enlarge the hemmes of their garmentes.
23:6And loue the vppermost seates at feastes, and to syt in the chiefe place in councels,
23:7And greetynges in the markettes, and to be called of men, Rabbi.
23:8But be not ye called Rabbi: For one is your maister, [euen] Christe, and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call [no man] your father, vpon the earth: for one is your father, which is in heauen.
23:10Neither be ye called maisters: for one is your maister [euen] Christe.
23:11He that is greatest among you, shalbe your seruaunt.
23:12But whosoeuer exalteth hym selfe, shalbe brought lowe: And he that humbleth hym selfe, shalbe exalted.
23:13Wo vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye shut vp the kingdome of heauen before men: ye neither go in your selues, neither suffer ye them that come, to enter in.
23:14Wo vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye deuoure widdowes houses, and that vnder a pretence of long prayer: therfore ye shall receaue the greater dampnation.
23:15Wo vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye compasse sea and lande, to make one proselite: & when he is become one, ye make hym two folde more the chylde of hell, then ye your selues [are].
23:16Wo be vnto you ye blynde guides: for ye say, whosoeuer doth sweare by the temple, it is nothyng: but whosoeuer sweareth by the golde of the temple, he is a detter.
23:17Ye fooles and blynde. For whether is greater, the golde, or the temple that sanctifieth the golde?
23:18And whosoeuer sweareth by the aulter, it is nothyng: but whosoeuer sweareth by the gyft that is vpon it, he is a detter.
23:19Ye fooles and blynde, for whether is greater, the gyft: or the aulter that sanctifieth the gyft?
23:20Who so therfore sweareth by the aulter, sweareth by it, and by all thynges theron.
23:21And who so sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by hym that dwelleth therin.
23:22And he that sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the seate of God, and by hym that sitteth theron.
23:23Wo vnto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye tythe mynt, and annise, and cummyn: and haue left the wayghtier matters of the lawe, iudgement, mercy, and fayth. These ought ye to haue done, and not to leaue the other vndone.
23:24Ye blynde guides, which strayne out a gnat, and swalowe a Camel.
23:25Wo vnto you Scribes and Pharisees hypocrites: for ye make cleane the vtter syde of the cup, & of the platter: but within they are full of brybery & excesse.
23:26Thou blynde Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outsyde of them may be cleane also.
23:27Wo vnto you Scribes and Pharisees hypocrites: for ye are lyke vnto paynted sepulchres, which in dede appeare beautifull outwarde, but are within full of dead [mens] bones, and of all fylthynes.
23:28Euen so, ye also, outwardly appeare ryghteous vnto men: But within, ye are full of hypocrisie and iniquitie.
23:29Wo vnto you Scribes and Pharisees hypocrites: ye builde the tombes of the Prophetes, and garnishe the sepulchres of the ryghteous:
23:30And say, yf we had ben in the dayes of our fathers, we woulde not haue ben parteners with them in the blood of the prophetes.
23:31And so ye be witnesses vnto your selues, that ye are the chyldren of them which kylled the prophetes.
23:32Fulfyll ye lykewyse, the measure of your fathers.
23:33Ye serpentes, ye generation of vipers, howe wyll ye escape the dampnation of hell?
23:34Wherfore, beholde I sende vnto you prophetes, and wyse men, and Scribes, and [some] of them ye shall kyll and crucifie: and [some] of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from citie to citie.
23:35That vpon you may come all the ryghteous blood, which hath ben shed vpon the earth, from the blood of ryghteous Abel, vnto the blood of Zacharias, sonne of Barachias, whom ye slewe betwene the temple & the aulter.
23:36Ueryly I say vnto you: all these thynges shal come vpon this generatio.
23:37O Hierusalem, Hierusalem, thou that kyllest the prophetes, and stonest them which are sent vnto thee: Howe often woulde I haue gathered thy chyldren together, euen as the henne gathereth her chickens vnder her wynges, and ye woulde not?
23:38Beholde, your house is left vnto you desolate.
23:39For I say vnto you: ye shall not see me hencefoorth, tyll that ye say, blessed [is he] that commeth in the name of the Lorde.

23:1Then spake Iesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
23:2Saying, The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses seate.
23:3All therefore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and doe: but after their workes doe not: for they say, and doe not.
23:4For they binde heauie burdens, and grieuous to be borne, and lay them on mens shoulders, but they themselues will not moue them with one of their fingers.
23:5All their workes they doe for to be seene of men: for they make their phylacteries broad, and make long the frindges of their garments,
23:6And loue the chiefe place at feastes, and to haue the chiefe seates in the assemblies,
23:7And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8But be not ye called, Rabbi: for one is your doctour, to wit, Christ, and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call no man your father vpon the earth: for there is but one, your father which is in heauen.
23:10Be not called doctours: for one is your doctour, euen Christ.
23:11But he that is greatest among you, let him be your seruant.
23:12For whosoeuer will exalt himselfe, shall be brought lowe: and whosoeuer will humble himselfe, shalbe exalted.
23:13Wo therefore be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, because ye shut vp the kingdome of heauen before men: for ye your selues go not in, neither suffer ye them that would enter, to come in.
23:14Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye deuoure widowes houses, euen vnder a colour of long prayers: wherefore ye shall receiue the greater damnation.
23:15Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye compasse sea and land to make one of your profession: and when he is made, ye make him two folde more the childe of hell, then you your selues.
23:16Wo be vnto you blinde guides, which say, Whosoeuer sweareth by the Temple, it is nothing: but whosoeuer sweareth by the golde of the Temple, he offendeth.
23:17Ye fooles and blinde, whether is greater, the golde, or the Temple that sanctifieth the golde?
23:18And whosoeuer sweareth by the altar, it is nothing: but whosoeuer sweareth by the offering that is vpon it, offendeth.
23:19Ye fooles and blinde, whether is greater, the offering, or the altar which sanctifieth the offering?
23:20Whosoeuer therefore sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
23:21And whosoeuer sweareth by the Temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
23:22And he that sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye tithe mynt, and annyse, and cummyn, and leaue the weightier matters of the law, as iudgement, and mercy and fidelitie. These ought ye to haue done, and not to haue left the other.
23:24Ye blinde guides, which straine out a gnat, and swallowe a camell.
23:25Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye make cleane the vtter side of the cup, and of the platter: but within they are ful of briberie and excesse.
23:26Thou blinde Pharise, cleanse first the inside of the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be cleane also.
23:27Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye are like vnto whited tombes, which appeare beautifull outward, but are within full of dead mens bones, and all filthines.
23:28So are ye also: for outwarde ye appeare righteous vnto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisie and iniquitie.
23:29Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye build the tombes of the Prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
23:30And say, If we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we would not haue bene partners with them in the blood of the Prophets.
23:31So then ye be witnesses vnto your selues, that ye are the children of them that murthered the Prophets.
23:32Fulfill ye also ye measure of your fathers.
23:33O serpents, the generation of vipers, howe should ye escape the damnation of hell!
23:34Wherefore beholde, I send vnto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes, and of them ye shall kill and crucifie: and of them shall ye scourge in your Synagogues, and persecute from citie to citie,
23:35That vpon you may come all the righteous blood that was shed vpon the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous, vnto the blood of Zacharias the sonne of Barachias, whome ye slewe betweene the Temple and the altar.
23:36Verely I say vnto you, all these things shall come vpon this generation.
23:37Hierusalem, Hierusalem, which killest the Prophets, and stonest them which are sent to thee, how often would I haue gathered thy children together, as the henne gathereth her chickins vnder her wings, and ye would not!
23:38Beholde, your habitation shalbe left vnto you desolate,
23:39For I say vnto you, ye shall not see mee henceforth till that ye say, Blessed is he that commeth in the Name of the Lord.
