23:1Then spake Iesus to the people, & to hys disciples
23:2sayinge: The Scribes and the Phariseis sit in Moyses seate.
23:3All therfore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and do, but after their workes do not,
23:4for they say and do not. Yea, and they bynd heauy burthens and greuous to be borne and lay them on mens shoulders: but they them selfs will not heaue at them with one of theyr fyngers.
23:5All their workes thei do for to be sene of men. They set abroade theyr philateries, & make large borders on theyr garmentes,
23:6and loue to sit vppermoste at feastes, and to haue the chiefe seates in the Synagoges,
23:7and gretynges in the markettes, and too be called of men Rabbi.
23:8But ye shall not suffer youre selues to be called Rabbi. For one is your master, that is to witte Christ, and all ye are brethreu.
23:9And call no man your father vpon the earth, for there is but one your father, & he is in heauen.
23:10Be not called masters: for there is but one your master: and he is Christ.
23:11He that is greatest amonge you: shalbe your seruaunt.
23:12But whosoeuer exalteth hym selfe: shalbe brought lowe, and he that humbleth hym selfe, shalbe exalted.
23:13Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, for ye shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: ye youre selues go not in, neyther suffer ye them that come to enter in.
23:14Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, ye deuoure wyddowes houses, & that vnder a coloure of praieng long prayers wherfore ye shall receyue great damnacion.
23:15Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrites: which compasse sea and lande, to brynge one into youre belefe: and when he is brought ye make hym two folde more the chyld of hell: then ye your selues are.
23:16Wo be vnto you blynde guydes, whyche say whosoeuer sweare by the temple, it is nothing, but whosoeuer sweared by the golde of the temple: he offendeth.
23:17Ye fooles and blind, whither is greater, the golde, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
23:18And whosoeuer sweareth by the aultare, it is nothynge: but whosoeuer sweareth by the offeryng that lyeth on the aulter, offendeth.
23:19Ye fooles and blynde, whither is greater the offerynge, or the aulter whiche sanctifieth the offeryng?
23:20Whosoeuer therfore sweareth by the aultare, sweareth by it and by all that thereon is.
23:21And whosoeuer sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by hym that dwelleth therin.
23:22And he that sweareth by heauen sweareth by the seate of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23Wo be to you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, which tythe mynte, anyse and commen, and leaue the wayghtyer matters of the lawe vndone: iudgement, mercy, and faythe. These ought ye to haue done, and not to haue lefte the other vndone.
23:24Ye blynde guydes whiche strayne out a gnat, and swallowe a cammell.
23:25Wo be to you Scribes and Pharises hypocrites, which make cleane the vtter side of the cuppe, & of the platter: but within they are ful of bribery and excesse.
23:26Thou blynd Pharisei, clense first the ynneside of the cup & platter, that the outside of them may be clene also.
23:27Wo be to you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrytes, for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes, whiche appeare beautifull outwarde, but are within full of dead bones and of all filthines.
23:28So are ye, for outwarde ye apeare righteouse vnto men, when within, ye are full of hypocresie and iniquitie.
23:29Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrites, ye buylde the tombes of the Prophetes and garnysh the sepulchres of the righteouse,
23:30and saye: if we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we woulde not haue bene parteners with them in the bloude of the Prophetes.
23:31So then ye be witnesses to your selues, that ye are the chyldren of them whyche kylled the Prophetes.
23:32Fulfil ye likewyse the measure of your fathers.
23:33Ye serpentes and generacion of vppers howe shoulde ye scape the damnacion of hell?
23:34Wherfore, behold I send vnto you Prophetes, wise men, & Scribes. Of them ye shal kyl and crucifye: and of them ye shall scourge in your synagoges, and persecute from citye to citye
23:35that vpon you may come all the ryghtuous bloude that was shede vpon the earth, from the bloude of ryghtuous Abel, vnto the bloude of Zacharias the sonne of Barachias, whom ye slewe betwene the tempel and the aulter.
23:36Verely I say vnto you, al these things shall lyght vpon this generation.
23:37Ierusalem, Ierusalem which killest prophetes, and stone them which are sent to the: howe often would I haue gathered thy children together: as the henne gathered her chikens vnder her winges, but ye would not.
23:38Beholde your habitation shalbe left vnto you desolate.
23:39For I saye to you, ye shall not se me hence forth tyll that ye saye blessed is he that commeth in the name of the Lorde.

23:1Then spake Iesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
23:2Saying, The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses seate.
23:3All therefore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and doe: but after their workes doe not: for they say, and doe not.
23:4For they binde heauie burdens, and grieuous to be borne, and lay them on mens shoulders, but they themselues will not moue them with one of their fingers.
23:5All their workes they doe for to be seene of men: for they make their phylacteries broad, and make long the frindges of their garments,
23:6And loue the chiefe place at feastes, and to haue the chiefe seates in the assemblies,
23:7And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8But be not ye called, Rabbi: for one is your doctour, to wit, Christ, and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call no man your father vpon the earth: for there is but one, your father which is in heauen.
23:10Be not called doctours: for one is your doctour, euen Christ.
23:11But he that is greatest among you, let him be your seruant.
23:12For whosoeuer will exalt himselfe, shall be brought lowe: and whosoeuer will humble himselfe, shalbe exalted.
23:13Wo therefore be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, because ye shut vp the kingdome of heauen before men: for ye your selues go not in, neither suffer ye them that would enter, to come in.
23:14Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye deuoure widowes houses, euen vnder a colour of long prayers: wherefore ye shall receiue the greater damnation.
23:15Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye compasse sea and land to make one of your profession: and when he is made, ye make him two folde more the childe of hell, then you your selues.
23:16Wo be vnto you blinde guides, which say, Whosoeuer sweareth by the Temple, it is nothing: but whosoeuer sweareth by the golde of the Temple, he offendeth.
23:17Ye fooles and blinde, whether is greater, the golde, or the Temple that sanctifieth the golde?
23:18And whosoeuer sweareth by the altar, it is nothing: but whosoeuer sweareth by the offering that is vpon it, offendeth.
23:19Ye fooles and blinde, whether is greater, the offering, or the altar which sanctifieth the offering?
23:20Whosoeuer therefore sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
23:21And whosoeuer sweareth by the Temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
23:22And he that sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye tithe mynt, and annyse, and cummyn, and leaue the weightier matters of the law, as iudgement, and mercy and fidelitie. These ought ye to haue done, and not to haue left the other.
23:24Ye blinde guides, which straine out a gnat, and swallowe a camell.
23:25Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye make cleane the vtter side of the cup, and of the platter: but within they are ful of briberie and excesse.
23:26Thou blinde Pharise, cleanse first the inside of the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be cleane also.
23:27Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye are like vnto whited tombes, which appeare beautifull outward, but are within full of dead mens bones, and all filthines.
23:28So are ye also: for outwarde ye appeare righteous vnto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisie and iniquitie.
23:29Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye build the tombes of the Prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
23:30And say, If we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we would not haue bene partners with them in the blood of the Prophets.
23:31So then ye be witnesses vnto your selues, that ye are the children of them that murthered the Prophets.
23:32Fulfill ye also ye measure of your fathers.
23:33O serpents, the generation of vipers, howe should ye escape the damnation of hell!
23:34Wherefore beholde, I send vnto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes, and of them ye shall kill and crucifie: and of them shall ye scourge in your Synagogues, and persecute from citie to citie,
23:35That vpon you may come all the righteous blood that was shed vpon the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous, vnto the blood of Zacharias the sonne of Barachias, whome ye slewe betweene the Temple and the altar.
23:36Verely I say vnto you, all these things shall come vpon this generation.
23:37Hierusalem, Hierusalem, which killest the Prophets, and stonest them which are sent to thee, how often would I haue gathered thy children together, as the henne gathereth her chickins vnder her wings, and ye would not!
23:38Beholde, your habitation shalbe left vnto you desolate,
23:39For I say vnto you, ye shall not see mee henceforth till that ye say, Blessed is he that commeth in the Name of the Lord.

23:1Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
23:2Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
23:3All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
23:4For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
23:5But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
23:6And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
23:7And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
23:10Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
23:11But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
23:12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
23:13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
23:14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
23:15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
23:16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
23:17Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
23:18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
23:19Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
23:20Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
23:21And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
23:22And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
23:24Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
23:25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
23:26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
23:27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
23:28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
23:29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
23:30And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
23:31Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
23:32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
23:33Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
23:34Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
23:35That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
23:36Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
23:37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
23:38Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
23:39For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
