23:1	Þa spræc se hælend to þam folke. & to his leorning-cnihten.
23:2	& quoth. bokeres. & pharisei. sæten ofer moyses lareow-setl.
23:3	healdeð & wyrcað swa hwæt swa hyo seggað. & ne do ge na æfter heore wercan. Hyo seggeð & ne doð
23:4	hyo bindeð hefige byrdene. þe man abere ne mæg. & leggeð þa up-on mannen exlan. & nelled hie þa mid heora fingre æt-hrinan.
23:5	Ealle heore werc hyo doð þt men hyo ge-seon. hyo tobredeð heora halsbec. & marsiað heora reafe fnæde.
23:6	Hyo lufieð þa fermestan setlen on beorscipan. & þa fermeste lareow-setlen on ge-samnengen.
23:7	& þt hy men grete on stræten. & þt hy man manne lareowes nemnie.
23:8	Ne gerne ge þt man eow lareowes nemnie. An ys eower lareow. Ge synde ealle ge-broðre.
23:9	& ne nemnie ge eow fæder ofer eorðan. an ys eower fæder se þe on heofene ys.
23:10	Ne eow man ne nemnie lareowes. for þam ane crist ys eower lareow.
23:11	Se þe eower yldest byo. syo se eower þeing.
23:12	Witodlice se þe hine up-ähefð. se beoð ge-neþered. & se þe hine selfne ge-eadmet. se beoð up-ahafen.
23:13	Wa eow bokeras & farisei lickeras for-þam ge be-lukeð heofene rice be-foran mannen. Ne ge in ne gað. ne ge ne geþafiað. þt oðre ingan.

23:15	Wa eow bokeres & farisei liceteras for-þam. ge befareð sæ. & eorðan þt ge don ænne ealðeodigene. & þanne he ge-wurðin beoð ge ge-doð hine helle bearn. twifealdlicor þanne eow.
23:16	Wa eow blinde liceteras ge seggeð swa hwylce swa swereð on temple þt is naht. swa hwa swa swerað on þas temples golde. se ys sceldig.
23:17	Eale ge desigen & blindan hwæðer ys mare ðe þt gold þe þt tempel þe þt gold halgað.
23:18	& swa hwa swa swereð on þam weofede þt ys naht. Swa hwilc swa swereð on þare ofrunge þe ofer þt weofed ys se is geltig.
23:19	Eale ge blinde hwæðer is mare þe offreng þe þt weofod þe ge-halgod þa offrenge.
23:20	Witodlice se þe swereð on weofode. he swereð on him & on eallen þan þe him ofer synt.
23:21	& se þe swereð on temple he swereð on him. & on þam þe him on eardiað.
23:22	& se þe swereð on heofenan he swereð on godes þrim-settel. & on þam þe ofer þt sit.
23:23	Wa eow bokeres & farisei. liceteres ge þe teoðiað mintan dyle & cumin & for-leten þa þing þe synde hefegeren. þære lage dom. & mildheortnysse. & geleafan. þas þing hit geberede. þt ge dydon. & þa oðre ne for-leten.
23:24	La blinde latteowas ge drenieð þanne gnet aweig. & drinceð þa olfend.
23:25	Wa eow bokeres. & farisei liceteras. for-þam ge clænsiað þt wið-utan þas calices & disscas. & ge synt innan fule reaflakes & unclænnysse.
23:26	Eala þu blinde fariseus. clænse ærest þt wið-innan ys. calices & discas (sic) þt hit sye clæne þæt wið-uten ys.
23:27	Wa eow bokeres & pharisei liceteras. for-þam ge synde gelïc hwite beriene. þa þinceð mannen uten wlytige. & hyo sinden innan fulle deadera banen. & ealre felðe.
23:28	& swa ge atewiað uton mannen riht-wisnisse. innen ge synd fulle licetenge & unrihtwisnysse.
23:29	Wa eow bokeres & farisei liceteras. ge þe tymbrieð witegene byregene. & glencgað rihtwisere ge-mynd-stowe.
23:30	& ge cwæðeð gyf we wæron on uren fæderen dagen nære we heora ge-feren on þare witegane blodes gyte.
23:31	Witodlice ge synd eow sylfe to ge-witnesse. þt ge synd þare bearn. þe of-slogen þa witegen.
23:32	& ge-fylle ge þt ge-met eowra fædera.
23:33	Eale ge næddra & neddrena kyn. hwi fleo ge fram helle dome.
23:34	Ic sende to eow witegan & wise bokeres. & ge hyo of-sleað. & hoð & swingeð on eowren somnungan. & ge hye ehtað of bery an berig.
23:35	þæt ofer eow cume ælc rihtwis blod. þe wæs agoten ofer eorðan. fram abeles blode þas rihtwisan. oððe zacharias blode barachias sune. þane ge of-slogen be-tweox þam temple & þam weofede.
23:36	Soð ic segge eow. ealle þas þing cumeð ofer þas cneornisse.
23:37	Eala ierusalem eala ierusalem þu þe þa witegan of-slyhst. & mid stanen of-torfest þa þe to þe asende synden. Swiðe oft ic wolde þine bearn gegaderian swa syo henn hyre chikene under hyre fiþera gegadereð. & þu noldest.
23:38	Witodlice nu beoð eower hus eow weste for-lætene.
23:39	Soð ic segge eow ne seo ge me heonan-forð ær þam þe ge seggen syo ge-bletsod se þe com on drihtnes namen.


23:1	Then spake Iesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
23:2	Saying, The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses seate.
23:3	All therefore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and doe: but after their workes doe not: for they say, and doe not.
23:4	For they binde heauie burdens, and grieuous to be borne, and lay them on mens shoulders, but they themselues will not moue them with one of their fingers.
23:5	All their workes they doe for to be seene of men: for they make their phylacteries broad, and make long the frindges of their garments,
23:6	And loue the chiefe place at feastes, and to haue the chiefe seates in the assemblies,
23:7	And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8	But be not ye called, Rabbi: for one is your doctour, to wit, Christ, and all ye are brethren.
23:9	And call no man your father vpon the earth: for there is but one, your father which is in heauen.
23:10	Be not called doctours: for one is your doctour, euen Christ.
23:11	But he that is greatest among you, let him be your seruant.
23:12	For whosoeuer will exalt himselfe, shall be brought lowe: and whosoeuer will humble himselfe, shalbe exalted.
23:13	Wo therefore be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, because ye shut vp the kingdome of heauen before men: for ye your selues go not in, neither suffer ye them that would enter, to come in.
23:14	Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye deuoure widowes houses, euen vnder a colour of long prayers: wherefore ye shall receiue the greater damnation.
23:15	Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye compasse sea and land to make one of your profession: and when he is made, ye make him two folde more the childe of hell, then you your selues.
23:16	Wo be vnto you blinde guides, which say, Whosoeuer sweareth by the Temple, it is nothing: but whosoeuer sweareth by the golde of the Temple, he offendeth.
23:17	Ye fooles and blinde, whether is greater, the golde, or the Temple that sanctifieth the golde?
23:18	And whosoeuer sweareth by the altar, it is nothing: but whosoeuer sweareth by the offering that is vpon it, offendeth.
23:19	Ye fooles and blinde, whether is greater, the offering, or the altar which sanctifieth the offering?
23:20	Whosoeuer therefore sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
23:21	And whosoeuer sweareth by the Temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
23:22	And he that sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23	Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye tithe mynt, and annyse, and cummyn, and leaue the weightier matters of the law, as iudgement, and mercy and fidelitie. These ought ye to haue done, and not to haue left the other.
23:24	Ye blinde guides, which straine out a gnat, and swallowe a camell.
23:25	Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye make cleane the vtter side of the cup, and of the platter: but within they are ful of briberie and excesse.
23:26	Thou blinde Pharise, cleanse first the inside of the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be cleane also.
23:27	Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye are like vnto whited tombes, which appeare beautifull outward, but are within full of dead mens bones, and all filthines.
23:28	So are ye also: for outwarde ye appeare righteous vnto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisie and iniquitie.
23:29	Wo be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye build the tombes of the Prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
23:30	And say, If we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we would not haue bene partners with them in the blood of the Prophets.
23:31	So then ye be witnesses vnto your selues, that ye are the children of them that murthered the Prophets.
23:32	Fulfill ye also ye measure of your fathers.
23:33	O serpents, the generation of vipers, howe should ye escape the damnation of hell!
23:34	Wherefore beholde, I send vnto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes, and of them ye shall kill and crucifie: and of them shall ye scourge in your Synagogues, and persecute from citie to citie,
23:35	That vpon you may come all the righteous blood that was shed vpon the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous, vnto the blood of Zacharias the sonne of Barachias, whome ye slewe betweene the Temple and the altar.
23:36	Verely I say vnto you, all these things shall come vpon this generation.
23:37	Hierusalem, Hierusalem, which killest the Prophets, and stonest them which are sent to thee, how often would I haue gathered thy children together, as the henne gathereth her chickins vnder her wings, and ye would not!
23:38	Beholde, your habitation shalbe left vnto you desolate,
23:39	For I say vnto you, ye shall not see mee henceforth till that ye say, Blessed is he that commeth in the Name of the Lord.


23:1	Then spake Iesus to the people and to his disciples
23:2	sayinge. The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses seate.
23:3	All therfore whatsoever they byd you observe that observe and do: but after their workes do not:
23:4	For they saye and do not. Ye and they bynde hevy burthes and grevous to be borne and ley the on menes shulders: but they themsylfes will not heave at them with one of their fyngers.
23:5	All their workes they do for to be sene of me. They set abroade their philateries and make large borders on there garmetes
23:6	and love to sit vppermooste at feastes and to have the chefe seates in the synagoges
23:7	and gretinges in the marketes and to be called of men Rabi.
23:8	But ye shall not suffre youre selves to be called Rabi. For one is youre master that is to wyt Christ and all ye are brethre.
23:9	And call no man youre father vpon the erth for there is but one youre father and he is in heven.
23:10	Be not called masters for there is but one youre master and he is Christ.
23:11	He that is greatest amoge you shalbe youre seruaunte.
23:12	But whosoever exalteth himsilfe shalbe brought lowe. And he yt hubleth himsilfe shalbe exalted.
23:13	Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites for ye shutte vp the kyngdome of heve before men: ye youre selves goo not in nether suffre ye them that come to enter in.
23:14	Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites: ye devoure widdowes houses and that vnder a coloure of praying longe prayers: wherfore ye shall receave greater damnacion.
23:15	Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites which compasse see and londe to bringe one in to youre belefe: and when he ys brought ye make him two folde more the chylde of hell then ye youre selves are.
23:16	Wo be vnto you blynd gides which saye whosoever sweare by the teple it is no thinge: but whosoever sweare by the golde of the temple he offendeth.
23:17	Ye foles and blinde? whether is greater the golde or the teple that sanctifieth ye golde.
23:18	And whosoever sweareth by the aulter it is nothinge: but whosoever sweareth by ye offeringe yt lyeth on ye aultre offendeth.
23:19	Ye foles and blinde: whether is greater ye offeringe or ye aultre which sanctifieth ye offeringe?
23:20	Whosoever therfore sweareth by ye aultre sweareth by it and by all yt there on is.
23:21	And whosoever sweareth by the teple sweareth by it and by hym yt dwelleth therin.
23:22	And he that sweareth by heve swereth by the seate of God and by hym that sytteth theron.
23:23	Wo be to you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites which tythe mynt annyse and comen and leave the waygthtyer mattres of ye lawe vndone: iudgemet mercy and fayth. These ought ye to have done and not to have left the othre vndone.
23:24	Ye blinde gydes which strayne out a gnat and swalowe a cammyll.
23:25	Wo be to you scribes and pharises ypocrites which make clene ye vtter syde of the cuppe and of the platter: but within they are full of brybery and excesse.
23:26	Thou blinde Pharise clense fyrst the outsyde of the cup and platter that the ynneside of them maye be clene also.
23:27	Wo be to you Scribe and Pharises ypocrite for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes which appere beautyfull outwarde: but are wt in full of deed bones and of all fylthynes.
23:28	So are ye for outwarde ye appere righteous vnto me when within ye are full of ypocrisie and iniquite.
23:29	Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites: ye bylde the tombes of the Prophetes and garnisshe the sepulchres of the righteous
23:30	and saye: Yf we had bene in the dayes of oure fathers we wolde not have bene parteners with them in the bloud of the Prophetes.
23:31	So then ye be witnesses vnto youre selfes that ye are the chyldren of them which killed the prophetes.
23:32	Fulfill ye lyke wyse the measure of youre fathers.
23:33	Yee serpentes and generacion of vipers how shuld ye scape ye dapnacio of hell?
23:34	Wherfore beholde I sende vnto you prophetes wyse men and scribes and of the ye shall kyll and crucifie: and of the ye shall scourge in youre synagoges and persecute from cyte to cyte
23:35	that vpon you maye come all the righteous bloude that was sheed vpon the erth fro the bloud of righteous Abell vnto ye bloud of zacharias the sonne of Barachias who ye slewe betwene the teple and ye altre.
23:36	Verely I say vnto you all these thinges shall light vpon this generacion.
23:37	Hierusalem hierusalem which kyllest prophetes and stonest the which are sent to the: how often wolde I have gadered thy chyldren to gether as the henne gadreth her chickes vnder her winges but ye wolde not:
23:38	Beholde youre habitacio shalbe lefte vnto you desolate.
23:39	For I saye to you ye shall not se me heceforthe tyll that ye saye: blessed is he that cometh in the name of ye Lorde.
