>
18:1When Iesus had spoken these wordes, he went forth with hys discyples ouer the broke Cedron, wher was a garden, into the which he entred and hys disciples.
18:2Iudas also which betrayed him, knewe the place: for Iesus ofte tymes resorted thyther wt his discyples.
18:3Iudas then after he had receaued a bonde of men, (and mynysters of the hye Prestes & Pharyses) came thyther with lanternes, and fyerbrandes, and wepens.
18:4And Iesus knowyng all thynges that shulde come on hym, went forth, and sayde vnto them: whom seke ye?
18:5They answered him: Iesus of Nazareth. Iesus sayeth vnto them: I am he. Iudas also which betrayed hym, stode with them.
18:6Assone then as he had sayde vnto them, I am he, they went backewarde and fell to the grounde.
18:7Then asked he them agayne: whom seke ye? They sayde: Iesus of Nazareth.
18:8Iesus answered: I haue tolde you, that I am he. If ye seke me therfore lett these goo their waye.
18:9That the saying might be fulfylled which he spake: of them which thou gauest me, haue I not lost one.
18:10Then Simon Peter hauynge a swearde, drue it, and smote the hye prestes seruaunt, and cut of hys ryght eare. The seruauntes name was Malchus.
18:11Therfore sayeth Iesus vnto Peter: put vp thy swearde into the sheath: shall I not dryncke of the cup, which my father hath geuen me?
18:12Then the company and the Captayne, and mynysters of the Iewes toke Iesus, and bounde hym,
18:13and led him awaye to Anna fyrst: for he was father in lawe vnto Cayphas, which was the hye Preste that same yere.
18:14Cayphas was he, which gaue counsell to the Iewes that it was expedient, that one man shulde dye for the people.
18:15And Symon Peter folowed Iesus, and so dyd another dyscyple: that dyscyple was knowen vnto the hye preste, & went in with Iesus into the palace of the hye Preste.
18:16But Peter stode at the dore without. Thent went out that other discyple (which was knowen vnto the hye preste) and spake to the damsell that kept the dore, and brought in Peter.
18:17Then sayde the damsell that kept the dore, vnto Peter. Art not thou also one of this mannes dyscyples? He sayde: I am not.
18:18The seruauntes and the ministers stode there, which had made a fyer of coles: for it was colde, and they warmed them selues. Peter also stode amonge them, and warmed hym.
18:19The hye preste then asked Iesus of hys dyscyples and of hys doctryne.
18:20Iesus answered hym: I spake openly in the worlde. I euer taught in the Synagoge, and in the temple, whyther all the Iewes resorte, and in secret haue I sayde nothyng.
18:21Why askest thou me? Aske them which hearde me, what I haue sayd vnto them. Beholde, they can tell what I sayde.
18:22When he had thus spoken, one of the ministers which stode by, smote Iesus on the face, sayinge: answerest thou the hye preaste so?
18:23Iesus answered hym: If I haue euyll spoken, beare witnes of the euyll: But yf I haue well spoken, why smytest thou me?
18:24And Annas sent hym bounde vnto Cayphas the hye preste.
18:25Symon Peter stode, and warmed him selfe Then sayde they vnto hym: art not thou also one of hys dyscyples? He denyed it, & sayde: I am not.
18:26One of the seruauntes of the hye prestes (hys cosyn whose eare Peter smote of) sayde vnto hym: dyd not I se the in the garden with him?
18:27Peter therfore denyed agayne: and immediatly the cocke crewe.
18:28Then led they Iesus from Cayphas into the hall of iudgement. It was in the mornynge, & they them selues went not into the iudgement hall lest they shulde be defyled, but that they myght eate Passeouer.
18:29Pylate then went out vnto them and sayde: what accusacyon bryng ye agaynste thys man?
18:30They answered and sayde vnto him: If he were not an euyll doar we wolde not haue delyuered him vnto the.
18:31Then sayde Pylate vnto them take ye hym, & iudge him after youre awne lawe. The Iewes therfore sayd vnto him: It is not lawfull for vs to put eny man to deeth.
18:32That the wordes of Iesus myght be fulfylled which he spake, signifyeng, what deeth he shuld dye.
18:33Then Pylate entred into the iudgement hall agayne, and called Iesus, and sayde vnto hym: art thou the kynge of the Iewes?
18:34Iesus answered: sayst thou that of thy selfe, or dyd other tell it the of me?
18:35Pylate answered: Am I a Iewe? Thyne awne nacion and hye prestes haue delyuered the vnto me. What hast thou done?
18:36Iesus answered: my kyngdome is not of this worlde. Yf my kyngdome were of this worlde, then wolde my mynysters suerly fyght, that I shulde not be delyuered to the Iewes, but now is my kyngdome not from hence.
18:37Pylate therfore sayde vnto him. Art thou a kyng then? Iesus answered: thou sayst that I am a kyng. For this cause was I borne, & for this cause came I into the worlde, that I shulde beare witnes vnto the trueth. And all that are of the trueth, heare my voyce.
18:38Pylate sayde vnto him, what thynge is trueth? And when he had sayde this, he went out agayne vnto the Iewes, and sayeth vnto them. I fynde in him no cause at all.
18:39Ye haue a custome, that I shulde deliuer you one loose at Easter. Wyll ye that I lose vnto you the kynge of the Iewes?
18:40Then cryed they all agayne sayinge. Not hym, but Barrabas: the same Barrabas was a murtherer.

18:1Whanne Jhesus hadde seid these thingis, he wente out with hise disciplis ouer the strond of Cedron, where was a yerd, in to which he entride, and hise disciplis.
18:2And Judas, that bitrayede hym, knew the place, for ofte Jhesus cam thidur with hise disciplis.
18:3Therfor whanne Judas hadde takun a cumpany of knyytis, and mynystris of the bischopis and of the Fariseis, he cam thidur with lanternys, and brondis, and armeris.
18:4And so Jhesus witynge alle thingis that weren to come on hym, wente forth, and seide to hem, Whom seken ye?
18:5Thei answeriden to hym, Jhesu of Nazareth. Jhesus seith to hem, Y am. And Judas that bitraiede hym, stood with hem.
18:6And whanne he seide to hem, Y am, thei wenten abak, and fellen doun on the erthe.
18:7And eft he axide hem, Whom seken ye? And thei seiden, Jhesu of Nazareth.
18:8He answeride to hem, Y seide to you, that Y am; therfor if ye seken me, suffre ye these to go awei.
18:9That the word which he seide schulde be fulfillid, For Y loste not ony of hem, whiche thou `hast youun to me.
18:10Therfor Symount Petre hadde a swerd, and drow it out, and smoot the seruaunt of the bischop, and kittide of his riyt eer. And the name of the seruaunt was Malcus.
18:11Therfor Jhesus seide to Petre, Putte thou thi swerd in to thi schethe; wolt thou not, that Y drynke the cuppe, that my fadir yaf to me?
18:12Therfor the cumpenye of knyytis, and the tribune, and the mynystris of the Jewis, token Jhesu, and bounden hym,
18:13and ledden hym first to Annas; for he was fadir of Caifas wijf, that was bischop of that yeer.
18:14And it was Caifas, that yaf counsel to the Jewis, that it spedith, that o man die for the puple.
18:15But Symount Petre suede Jhesu, and another disciple; and thilke disciple was knowun to the bischop. And he entride with Jhesu, in to the halle of the bischop;
18:16but Petre stood at the dore with outforth. Therfor `the tother disciple, that was knowun to the bischop, wente out, and seide to the womman that kepte the dore, and brouyte in Petre.
18:17And the damysel, kepere of the dore, seide to Petre, Whether thou art also of this mannys disciplis? He seide, Y am not.
18:18And the seruantis and mynystris stooden at the coolis, for it was coold, and thei warmyden hem; and Petre was with hem, stondynge and warmynge hym.
18:19And the bischop axide Jhesu of hise disciplis, and of his techyng.
18:20Jhesus answerde to hym, Y haue spokun opynli to the world; Y tauyte euermore in the synagoge, and in the temple, whider alle the Jewis camen togidere, and in hiddlis Y spak no thing.
18:21What axist thou me? axe hem that herden, what Y haue spokun to hem; lo! thei witen, what thingis Y haue seid.
18:22Whanne he hadde seid these thingis, oon of the mynystris stondynge niy, yaf a buffat to Jhesu, and seide, Answerist thou so to the bischop?
18:23Jhesus answeride to hym, If Y haue spokun yuel, bere thou witnessyng of yuel; but if Y seide wel, whi smytist thou me?
18:24And Annas sente hym boundun to Caifas, the bischop.
18:25And Symount Petre stood, and warmyde him; and thei seiden to hym, Whether also thou art his disciple? He denyede, and seide, Y am not.
18:26Oon of the bischops seruantis, cosyn of hym, whos eere Petre kitte of, seide, Say Y thee not in the yerd with hym?
18:27And Petre eftsoone denyede, and anoon the cok crew.
18:28Thanne thei ledden Jhesu to Cayfas, in to the moot halle; and it was eerli, and thei entriden not in to the moot halle, that thei schulden not be defoulid, but that thei schulden ete pask.
18:29Therfor Pilat wente out with outforth to hem, and seide, What accusyng brynge ye ayens this man?
18:30Thei answeriden, and seiden to hym, If this were not a mysdoere, we hadden not bitakun hym to thee.
18:31Thanne Pilat seith to hem, Take ye hym, and deme ye him, after youre lawe. And the Jewis seiden to hym, It is not leueful to vs to sle ony man;
18:32that the word of Jhesu schulde be fulfillid, whiche he seide, signifiynge bi what deth he schulde die.
18:33Therfor eftsoone Pilat entride in to the moot halle, and clepide Jhesu, and seide to hym, Art thou kyng of Jewis?
18:34Jhesus answerde, and seide to hym, Seist thou this thing of thi silf, ether othere han seid to thee of me?
18:35Pilat answeride, Whether Y am a Jewe? Thi folc and bischops bitoken thee to me; what hast thou don?
18:36Jhesus answeride, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my mynystris schulden stryue, that Y schulde not be takun to the Jewis; but now my kingdom is not here.
18:37And so Pilat seide to hym, Thanne `thou art a king. Jhesus answeride, Thou seist, that Y am a king. To this thing Y am borun, and to this Y `am comun in to the world, to bere witnessing to treuthe. Eche that is of treuthe, herith my vois.
18:38Pilat seith to hym, What is treuthe? And whanne he hadde seid this thing, eft he wente out to the Jewis, and seide to hem, Y fynde no cause in hym.
18:39But it is a custom to you, that Y delyuere oon to you in pask; therfor wole ye that Y delyuere to you the kyng of Jewis?
18:40Alle crieden eftsoone, and seiden, Not this, but Baraban. And Barabas was a theef.

18:1Whan Iesus had thus spoke, he wete forth with his disciples ouer the broke Cedron, where there was a garde, in to the which Iesus entred and his disciples.
18:2But Iudas yt betrayed hi, knewe the place also. For Iesus resorted thither oft tymes wt his disciples.
18:3Now whan Iudas had take vnto him the copany, & mynisters of the hye prestes and Pharises, he came thither with creshettes, wt lanternes, and with weapens.
18:4Iesus now knowinge all yt shulde come vpon him, wete forth, and sayde vnto the: Whom seke ye?
18:5They answered him: Iesus of Nazareth. Iesus sayde vnto them: I am he. Iudas also which betrayed him, stode with the.
18:6Now whan Iesus sayde vnto the: I am he, they wete bacwardes, and fell to the grounde.
18:7Then axed he the agayne: Whom seke ye? They sayde: Iesus of Nazareth.
18:8Iesus answered: I haue tolde you, that I am he. Yf ye seke me, then let these go their waye.
18:9That the worde might be fulfylled, which he sayde: Of them who thou gauest me, haue I not lost one.
18:10Then had Symon Peter a swerde, and drewe it out, and smote the hye prestes seruaut, and cut of his right eare. And ye seruautes name was Malchus.
18:11Then sayde Iesus vnto Peter: Put vp thy swerde in to the sheeth. Shal I not drynke of ye cuppe, which my father hath geue me?
18:12Then the company and the captayne & the officers of the Iewes toke Iesus, and bounde him,
18:13& led him awaye first vnto Annas, that was fatherlawe vnto Caiphas, which was hye prest yt same yeare.
18:14It was Caiphas, which gaue coucell vnto ye Iewes that it were good, that one man shulde dye for the people.
18:15As for Symon Peter, he and another disciple folowed Iesus. The same disciple was knowne vnto the hye prest, and wete in with Iesus in to the hye prestes palace.
18:16But Peter stode without at the dore. Then yt other disciple which was knowne vnto the hye prest, wente out, and spake to the damsell yt kepte the dore, and brought in Peter.
18:17Then the damsell that kepte the dore, sayde vnto Peter: Art not thou also one of this mans disciples? He sayde: I am not.
18:18The seruauntes & officers stode, and had made a fyre of coles (for it was colde) & warmed the selues. Peter also stode with them, and warmed him self.
18:19The hye prest axed Iesus of his disciples, and of his doctryne.
18:20Iesus answered him: I haue spoken openly before the worlde, I haue euer taught in the synagoge and in the teple, whither all the Iewes resorted, & in secrete haue I spoke nothinge.
18:21Why axest thou me? Axe the yt haue herde, what I haue spoken vnto the: beholde, they can tell what I haue sayde.
18:22But whan he had thus spoke, one of the officers that stode by, smote Iesus on the face, and sayde: Answerest thou the hye prest so?
18:23Iesus answered him: Yf I haue euell spoke, the beare wytnesse of euell: but yf I haue well spoken, why smytest thou me?
18:24And Annas sent him bounde vnto Caiphas ye hye prest.
18:25Symo Peter stode and warmed him self. The sayde they vnto him: Art not thou one of his disciples? He denyed, and sayde: I am not.
18:26A seruaut of the hye prestes, a kynssma of his, whose eare Peter had smytten of, sayde vnto him: Dyd not I se the in the garde with him?
18:27Then Peter denyed agayne. And immediatly the cock crew.
18:28Then led they Iesus from Caiphas in to the comon hall. And it was early in the mornynge. And they them selues wete not in to the como hall, lest they shulde be defyled, but yt they might eate ye Pascall lambe.
18:29Then wente Pilate out vnto the, and sayde: What accusacion brynge ye agaynst this man?
18:30They answered, and sayde vnto him: Yf he were not an euell doer, we had not delyuered him vnto the.
18:31Then sayde Pilate vnto the: Take ye him, and iudge him after yor lawe. Then sayde ye Iewes vnto him: It is not laufull for vs to put eny ma to death.
18:32That ye worde of Iesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, whan he signified, what death he shulde dye.
18:33Then entred Pilate in to the comon hall agayne, and called Iesus, & sayde vnto him: Art thou the kynge of the Iewes?
18:34Iesus answered: Sayest thou that of thy self, or haue other tolde it the of me?
18:35Pilate answered: Am I a Iewe? Thy people and the hye prestes haue delyuered the vnto me. What hast thou done?
18:36Iesus answered: My kyugdome is not of this worlde. Yf my kyngdome were of this worlde, my mynisters wolde fight therfore, yt I shulde not be delyuered vnto the Iewes. But now is my kyngdome not from hence.
18:37The sayde Pilate vnto hi: Art thou a kynge the? Iesus answered: Thou sayest it, for I am a kynge. For this cause was I borne, and came in to the worlde, that I shulde testifye the trueth. Who so euer is of the trueth, heareth my voyce.
18:38Pilate sayde vnto hi: What is the trueth? And whan he had sayde that he wete out agayne to the Iewes, and sayde vnto them: I fynde no gyltinesse in him:
18:39But ye haue a custome, that I shulde geue one vnto you lowse at Easter. Wyl ye now yt I lowse vnto you the kynge of ye Iewes?
18:40The cryed they agayne alltogether, and sayde: Not him, but Barrabas. Yet was Barrabas a murthurer.
