Acts - Chapter: 16


16:1	Then came he to Derbe, and Lystra: and behold, a certaine disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certaine woman which was a Iewesse, and beleeued: but his father was a Greeke:
16:2	Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
16:3	Him would Paul haue to go forth with him, and tooke, and circumcised him, because of the Iewes which were in those quarters: for they knew all, that his father was a Greeke.
16:4	And as they went through the cities, they deliuered them the decrees for to keepe, that were ordeined of the Apostles and Elders, which were at Hierusalem.
16:5	And so were the Churches established in the faith, and increased in number dayly.
16:6	Now when they had gone thorowout Phrygia, and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
16:7	After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to goe into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
16:8	And they passing by Mysia, came downe to Troas.
16:9	And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come ouer into Macedonia, and helpe vs.
16:10	And after he had seene the vision, immediatly we endeuoured to goe into Macedonia, assuredly gathering, that the Lord had called vs for to preach the Gospel vnto them.
16:11	Therfore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis:
16:12	And from thence to Philippi, which is the chiefe citie of that part of Macedonia, and a Colonie: and we were in that citie abiding certaine dayes.
16:13	And on the Sabboth we went out of the citie by a riuer side, where prayer was wont to be made, & we sate downe, and spake vnto the women which resorted thither.
16:14	And a certaine woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the citie of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard vs: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended vnto the things which were spoken of Paul.
16:15	And when she was baptized, and her houshold, she besought vs, saying, If ye haue iudged me to bee faithfull to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained vs.
16:16	And it came to passe, as we went to prayer, a certaine Damosell possessed with a spirit of diuination, met vs: which brought her masters much gaine by soothsaying.
16:17	The same followed Paul and vs, and cried, saying, These men are the seruants of the most hie God, which shew vnto vs the way of saluation.
16:18	And this did she many dayes: but Paul being grieued, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the Name of Iesus Christ, to come out of her. And he came out the same houre.
16:19	And when her Masters saw that the hope of their gaines was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the market place, vnto the rulers,
16:20	And brought them to the Magistrates, saying, These men being Iewes, do exceedingly trouble our city,
16:21	And teach customes which are not lawfull for vs to receiue, neither to obserue, being Romanes.
16:22	And the multitude rose vp together against them, and the Magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beate them.
16:23	And when they had layed many stripes vpon them, they cast them into prison, charging the Iaylour to keepe them safely.
16:24	Who hauing receiued such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, & made their feet fast in the stockes.
16:25	And at midnight, Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises vnto God: and the prisoners heard them.
16:26	And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doores were opened, and euery ones bands were loosed.
16:27	And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleepe, and seeing the prison doores open, he drew out his sword, and would haue killed himselfe, supposing that the prisoners had beene fled.
16:28	But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Doe thy selfe no harme, for we are all heere.
16:29	Then hee called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell downe before Paul and Silas,
16:30	And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I doe to be saued?
16:31	And they saide, Beleeue on the Lord Iesus Christ, and thou shalt be saued, and thy house.
16:32	And they spake vnto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
16:33	And hee tooke them the same houre of the night, and washed their stripes, and was baptized, hee and all his, straightway.
16:34	And when he had brought them into his house, hee set meat before them, and reioyced, beleeuing in God with all his house.
16:35	And when it was day, the Magistrates sent the Sergeants, saying, Let those men goe.
16:36	And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The Magistrates haue sent to let you goe: Now therefore depart, and goe in peace.
16:37	But Paul said vnto them, They haue beaten vs openly vncondemned, being Romanes, and haue cast vs into prison, and now doe they thrust vs out priuily? Nay verily, but let them come themselues, and fetch vs out.
16:38	And the Sergeants tolde these words vnto the Magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romanes.
16:39	And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the citie.
16:40	And they went out of the prison, and entred into the house of Lydia, and when they had seene the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

16:3	Paul wolde that the same shulde go forth with him, and toke and circumcysed him because of the Iewes that were in those quarters. For they knewe all, that his father was a Greke.
16:4	But as they wente thorow the cities, they delyuered them the sentence to kepe, which was concluded of the Apostles and Elders at Ierusalem.
16:5	The were the congregacions stablyshed in the faith, and increased in nombre daylie.
16:6	But as they wente thorow Phrygia and the londe of Galacia, they were forbydden of the holy goost, to preache the worde in Asia.
16:7	Howbeit as they came in to Mysia, they proued to take their iourney in to Bithinia, and the sprete suffred them not.
16:8	Neuertheles whan they had passed thorow Mysia, they came downe to Troada,
16:9	and there appeared a vision vnto Paul by night, that there was a man of Macedonia which stode and prayed him, and sayde: Come downe to Macedonia, and helpe vs.
16:10	Whan he had sene ye vision, we soughte immediatly to go, vnto Macedonia, beynge certified, that ye LORDE had called vs thither, to preach the Gospell vnto them.
16:11	The departed we from Troada, and came the straight course vnto Samothracia, on the nexte daye to Neapolis,
16:12	and from thence to Philippis, which is the chefe cite of the londe of Macedonia, and a fre cite. In this cite abode we certayne dayes.
16:13	On the daye of the Sabbathes wete we out of the cite besyde the water, where men were wonte to praye, and we sat downe, and spake vnto the wemen that resorted thither.
16:14	And a deuoute woman (named Lydia) a seller of purple, out of the cite of Thiatira, herkened to, whose hert the LORDE opened that she gaue hede vnto the thinges that Paul spake.
16:15	Whan she was baptysed and hir housholde, she besoughte vs, and sayde: Yf ye thynke that I beleue on the LORDE, then come in to my house, and a byde there. And she constrayned vs.
16:16	It fortuned whan we wente to prayer, yt there met vs a damsel, which had a sprete of soythsayenge, and broughte hir master and mastresse greate vauntage with soyth sayenge:
16:17	ye same folowed Paul and vs, and cryed, and sayde: These men are the seruauntes of the most hye God, which shewe vs ye waye of saluacion.
16:18	This dyd she many dayes. But Paul was not content with it, and turned him aboute, and sayde vnto the sprete: I comaunde the in the name of Iesu Christ, that thou departe out of her. And he departed out at the same houre.
16:19	But wha hir master and mastresse sawe that the hope of their vauntage was gone, they toke Paul and Sylas, drue them in to the market place before ye rulers,
16:20	& broughte the vnto the officers, and sayde: These men trouble oure cyte, & are Iewes,
16:21	and preach an ordynaunce, which is not laufull for vs to receaue, ner to obserue, seynge we are Romaynes.
16:22	And the people rane on them, and the officers rente their clothes, and comaunded them to be beaten with roddes.
16:23	And whan they had beaten them sore, they cast the in preson, and commaunded the iayler, to kepe them diligetly.
16:24	Which whan he had receaued soch commaundement, he cast the in to the ynner preson, and put their fete in the stockes.
16:25	But at mydnight prayed Paul and Sylas, and praysed God. And the presoners herde them.
16:26	Sodenly was there a greate earth quake, so that the foundacions of the preson were shaken. And immediatly were all the dores open, & all their bondes lowsed
16:27	Wha the keper of the preson waked out of slepe, and sawe the preson dores open, he drue out his swerde, and wolde haue kylled him selfe: for he thoughte ye presoners had bene fled.
16:28	But Paul cryed loude, and sayde: Do thy self no harme, for we are all here.
16:29	He called for a lighte, and sprange in, and trembled, and fell at the fete of Paul and Sylas,
16:30	and broughte them out, and sayde: Syrs, what must I do, to be saued?
16:31	They sayde: Beleue on the LORDE Iesus, and so shalt thou and thy housholde be saued.
16:32	And they preached the worde of the LORDE vnto him, and to all that were in his house.
16:33	And he toke them to him in the same houre of the night, and wasshed their strypes. And immediatly was he baptysed, and all his.
16:34	And he broughte them in to his house, and set them a table, and reioysed with all his housholde, that he was become a beleuer on God.
16:35	And whan it was daye, the officers of the cite sent mynisters, and sayde: Let those men go.
16:36	And the keper of the preson tolde this sayenge vnto Paul: The officers haue sent hither, that ye shulde be lowse. Now therfore get you hece, and go in peace.
16:37	But Paul sayde vnto them: They haue beaten vs openly vncondempned (where as we are yet Romaynes) and haue cast vs in preson, and shulde they now thrust vs out preuely? Not so, but let them come them selues, and brynge vs out.
16:38	The mynisters tolde these wordes vnto the officers. And they feared, whan they herde that they were Romaynes,
16:39	and came and besoughte them, and prayed the to departe out of the cite.
16:40	Then wente they out of the preson, and entred in to the house of Lydia. And whan they had sene the brethren and comforted them, they departed.


16:1	And he cam in to Derben and Listram. And lo! a disciple was there, bi name Timothe, the sone of a Jewesse cristen, and of the fadir hethen.
16:2	And britheren that weren in Listris and Iconye, yeldiden good witnessing to hym.
16:3	And Poul wolde that this man schulde go forth with him, and he took, and circumsidide hym, for Jewis that weren in the places. For alle wisten, that his fadir was hethen.
16:4	Whanne thei passiden bi citees, thei bitoken to hem to kepe the techingis, that weren demyd of apostlis and eldre men, that weren at Jerusalem.
16:5	And the chirches weren confermed in feith, and encreseden in noumbre eche dai.
16:6	And thei passiden Frigie, and the cuntre of Galathi, and weren forbedun of the Hooli Goost to speke the word of God in Asie.
16:7	And whanne thei camen in to Mysie, thei assaieden to go in to Bithynye, and the spirit of Jhesu suffride not hem.
16:8	But whanne thei hadden passid bi Mysie, thei camen doun to Troade;
16:9	and a visioun `bi nyyt was schewid to Poul. But a man of Macedonye that stoode, preiede hym, and seide, Go thou in to Macedonye, and helpe vs.
16:10	And as he hadde sei the visioun, anoon we souyten to go forth in to Macedonye, and weren maad certeyn, that God hadde clepid vs to preche to hem.
16:11	And we yeden bi schip fro Troade, and camen to Samatrachia with streiyt cours; and the dai suynge to Neapolis;
16:12	and fro thennus to Filippis, that is the firste part of Macedonye, the citee colonye. And we weren in this citee summe daies, and spaken togidere.
16:13	And in the dai of sabotis we wenten forth with out the yate bisidis the flood, where preier semyde to be; and we saten, and spaken to wymmen that camen togidere.
16:14	And a womman, Lidda bi name, a purpuresse of the cite of Tiatirens, worschipinge God, herde; whos herte the Lord openyde to yyue tente to these thingis, that weren seid of Poul.
16:15	And whanne sche was baptisid and hir hous, sche preyede, and seide, If ye han demyd that Y am feithful to the Lord, entre ye in to myn hous, and dwelle.
16:16	And sche constreynede vs. And it was don, whanne we yeden to preier, that a damysel that hadde a spirit of diuynacioun, mette vs, which yaf greet wynnyng to her lordis in dyuynynge.
16:17	This suede Poul and vs, and criede, and seide, These men ben seruauntis of the hiy God, that tellen to you the weie of helthe.
16:18	And this sche dide in many daies. And Poul sorewide, and turnede, and seide to the spirit, Y comaunde thee in the name of Jhesu Crist, that thou go out of hir.
16:19	And he wente out in the same our. And the lordis of hir siyen, that the hope of her wynnyng wente awei, and thei token Poul and Silas, and ledden in to the `dom place, to the princis.
16:20	And thei brouyten hem to the magistratis, and seiden, These men disturblen oure citee,
16:21	for thei ben Jewis, and schewen a custom, which it is not leueful to vs to resseyue, nether do, sithen we ben Romayns.
16:22	And the puple `and magistratis runnen ayens hem, and when thei hadden to-rente the cootis of hem, thei comaundiden hem to be betun with yerdis.
16:23	And whanne thei hadden youun to hem many woundis, thei senten hem into prisoun, and comaundiden to the kepere, that he schulde kepe hem diligentli.
16:24	And whanne he hadde take siche a precept, he putte hem into the ynnere prisoun, and streynede the feet of hem in a tre.
16:25	And at mydniyt Poul and Silas worschipide, and heriden God; and thei that weren in kepyng herden hem.
16:26	And sudenli a greet erthe mouyng was maad, so that the foundementis of the prisoun weren moued. And anoon alle the doris weren openyd, and the boondis of alle weren lousid.
16:27	And the kepere of the prisoun was awakid, and siy the yatis `of the prisoun openyd, and with a swerd drawun out he wolde haue slawe hym silf, and gesside that the men that weren boundun, hadden fled.
16:28	But Poul criede with a greet vois, and seide, Do thou noon harm to thi silf, for alle we ben here.
16:29	And he axide liyt, and entride, and tremblide, and felle doun to Poul and to Silas at her feet.
16:30	And he brouyte hem with out forth, and seide, Lordis, what bihoueth me to do, that Y be maad saaf?
16:31	And thei seiden, Bileue thou in the Lord Jhesu, and thou schalt be saaf, and thin hous.
16:32	And thei spaken to hym the word of the Lord, with alle that weren in his hous.
16:33	And he took hem in the ilke our of the niyt, and waschide her woundis. And he was baptisid, and al his hous anoon.
16:34	And whanne he hadde led hem in to his hous, he settide to hem a boord. And he was glad with al his hous, and bileuede to God.
16:35	And whanne dai was come, the magistratis senten catchepollis, and seiden, Delyuere thou tho men.
16:36	And the kepere of the prisoun telde these wordis to Poul, That the magistratis han sent, that ye be delyuered; now therfor go ye out, and go ye in pees.
16:37	And Poul seide to hem, Thei senten vs men of Rome in to prisoun, that weren betun openli and vndampned, and now priueli thei bringen vs out; not so, but come thei hem silf, and delyuere vs out.
16:38	And the catchepollis telden these wordis to the magistratis; and thei dredden, for thei herden that thei weren Romayns.
16:39	And thei camen, and bisechiden hem, and thei brouyten hem out, and preieden, that thei schulden go out of the citee.
16:40	And thei yeden out of the prisoun, and entriden to Lidie. And whanne thei siyen britheren, thei coumfortiden hem, and yeden forth.
