3:1 | A feithful word. If ony man desirith a bishopriche, he desirith a good werk. |
3:2 | Therfor it bihoueth a byschop to be with out repreef, the hosebonde of o wijf, sobre, prudent, chast, vertewous, holdinge hospitalite, a techere; |
3:3 | not youun myche to wyn, not a smytere, but temperat, not ful of chiding, not coueitouse, wel reulinge his hous, |
3:4 | and haue sones suget with al chastite; |
3:5 | for if ony man kan not gouerne his house, hou schal he haue diligence of the chirche of God? not new conuertid to the feith, |
3:6 | lest he be borun vp in to pride, and falle in to doom of the deuel. |
3:7 | For it bihoueth hym to haue also good witnessing of hem that ben with outforth, that he falle not in to repreef, and in to the snare of the deuel. |
3:8 | Also it bihoueth dekenes to be chast, not double tungid, not youun myche to wyn, not suynge foul wynnyng; |
3:9 | that han the mysterie of feith in clene conscience. |
3:10 | But be thei preued first, and mynystre so, hauynge no cryme. |
3:11 | Also it bihoueth wymmen to be chast, not bacbitinge, sobre, feithful in alle thingis. |
3:12 | Dekenes be hosebondis of o wijf; whiche gouerne wel her sones and her housis. |
3:13 | For thei that mynystren wel, schulen gete a good degre to hem silf, and myche triste in the feith, that is in Crist Jhesu. |
3:14 | Sone Timothe, Y write to thee these thingis, hopinge that Y schal come soon to thee; |
3:15 | but if Y tarie, that thou wite, hou it bihoueth thee to lyue in the hous of God, that is the chirche of lyuynge God, a pilere and sadnesse of treuthe. |
3:16 | And opynli it is a greet sacrament of pitee, that thing that was schewid in fleisch, it is iustified in spirit, it apperid to aungels, it is prechid to hethene men, it is bileuyd in the world, it is takun vp in glorie. |
3:1 | This is a true sayinge. Yf a ma covet ye office of a bysshope he desyreth a good worke. |
3:2 | Ye and a bisshope must be fautlesse the husband of one wyfe sober discrete honestly aparelled harberous apt to teache |
3:3 | not dronke no fighter not geve to filthy lucre: but gentle abhorrynge fightynge abhorrynge coveteousnes |
3:4 | and one that rueleth his awne housse honestly havynge chyldren vnder obedience with all honeste. |
3:5 | For yf a man cannot rule his owne housse how shall he care for the congregacion of God. |
3:6 | He maye not be a yonge skoler lest he swell and faule into the iudgement of the evyll |
3:7 | speaker. He must also be well reported of amonge them which are with out forth lest he fall into rebuke and snare of the evyll speaker. |
3:8 | Lykwyse must the deacons be honest not double tonged not geve vnto moche drynkinge nether vnto filthy lucre: |
3:9 | but havynge the mistery of the fayth in pure consciece. |
3:10 | And let them fyrst be proved and then let them minister yf they be founde fautlesse. |
3:11 | Even so must their wynes be honest not evyll speakers: but sober and faythfull in all thinges. |
3:12 | Let the deacons be the husbandes of one wyfe and suche as rule their chyldren well and their awne housholdes. |
3:13 | For they that minister well get them selves good degre and greate libertie in the fayth which is in Christ Iesu. |
3:14 | These thinges write I vnto the trustinge to come shortly vnto the: |
3:15 | but and yf I tarie longe yt then thou mayst yet have knowledge how thou oughtest to behave thy silfe in the housse of God which is the congregacion of the livinge God the pillar and grounde of trueth. |
3:16 | And with out naye great is that mistery of godlines: God was shewed in the flesshe was iustified in the sprete was sene of angels was preached vnto the gentyls was beleved on in erth and receaved vp in glory. |

3:3 | Not geuen to moch wyne, no fighter, not geuen to filthy lucre: but gentle, abhorrynge stryfe, abhorrynge couetousnes: |
3:4 | & one that ruleth his awne house honestly, hauynge obedient children with all honestye. |
3:5 | (But yf a man can not rule his owne house, how shal he care for the congregacion of God?) |
3:6 | He maye not be a yoge scolar, lest he be puft vp, and fall in to the iudgment of ye euell speaker. |
3:7 | He must also haue a good reporte of them which are without, lest he fall in to the rebuke and snare of the euell speaker. |
3:8 | Likewyse must the mynisters be honest, not double tonged, not geuen to moch wyne, nether vnto fylthie lucre, |
3:9 | but hauynge the mystery of faith in pure conscience. |
3:10 | And let them first be proued, and then let them mynister, yf they be blamelesse. |
3:11 | Euen so must their wyues be honest, not euell speakers, but sober and faithfull in all thinges. |
3:12 | Let the mynisters be, euery one the hussbade of one wyfe, and soch as rule their children well, and their owne housholdes. |

3:16 | and without naye, greate is that mystery of godlynes. God was shewed in the flesh: was iustified in the sprete: was sene of angels: was preached vnto the Heythen: was beleued on in the worlde: was receaued vp in glory. |
