| 14:1 | Now Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah, perceiued that the kings heart was toward Absalom. |
| 14:2 | And Ioab sent to Tekoah, and fetcht thence a wise woman, and said vnto her, I pray thee, faine thy selfe to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thy selfe with oile, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead: |
| 14:3 | And come to the king, and speake on this maner vnto him: so Ioab put the words in her mouth. |
| 14:4 | And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, shee fell on her face to the ground, and did obeysance, and said, Helpe, O king. |
| 14:5 | And the king said vnto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead. |
| 14:6 | And thy handmayd had two sonnes, and they two stroue together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him. |
| 14:7 | And behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmayd, and they said, Deliuer him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew, and we will destroy the heire also: and so they shall quench my cole which is left, and shall not leaue to my husband neither name nor remainder vpon the earth. |
| 14:8 | And the king saide vnto the woman, Goe to thine house, and I will giue charge concerning thee. |
| 14:9 | And the woman of Tekoah said vnto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquitie bee on mee, and on my fathers house: and the king and his throne bee guiltlesse. |
| 14:10 | And the king said, Whosoeuer saith ought vnto thee, bring him to mee, and he shall not touch thee any more. |
| 14:11 | Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the reuengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my sonne. And he said, As the Lord liueth, there shall not one haire of thy sonne fall to the earth. |
| 14:12 | Then the woman said, Let thine handmayd, I pray thee, speake one word vnto my lord the king. And hee said, Say on. |
| 14:13 | And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? For the king doeth speake this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doeth not fetch home againe his banished. |
| 14:14 | For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot bee gathered vp againe: neither doeth God respect any person, yet doeth he deuise meanes, that his banished bee not expelled from him. |
| 14:15 | Now therefore that I am come to speake of this thing vnto my lord the king, it is because the people haue made me afraid: and thy handmayd said, I will now speake vnto the king; it may bee that the king will performe the request of his handmayd. |
| 14:16 | For the king wil heare, to deliuer his handmayd out of the hand of the man that would destroy mee, and my sonne together out of the inheritance of God: |
| 14:17 | Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an Angel of God, so is my lord the king to discerne good and bad: therfore the Lord thy God will be with thee. |
| 14:18 | Then the king answered and said vnto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall aske thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speake. |
| 14:19 | And the king said, Is not the hand of Ioab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soule liueth, my lord the king, none can turne to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy seruant Ioab, hee bade me, and he put all these wordes in the mouth of thine handmaid: |
| 14:20 | To fetch about this forme of speech hath thy seruant Ioab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisedome of an Angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth. |
| 14:21 | And the king said vnto Ioab, Behold now, I haue done this thing: goe therefore, bring the yong man Absalom againe. |
| 14:22 | And Ioab fell to the ground on his face, & bowed himselfe, and thanked the king: and Ioab said, To day thy seruant knoweth that I haue found grace in thy sight, my lord O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his seruant. |
| 14:23 | So Ioab arose, and went to Geshur, & brought Absalom to Ierusalem. |
| 14:24 | And the king said, Let him turne to his owne house, & let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his owne house, and sawe not the kings face. |
| 14:25 | But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom, for his beautie: from the sole of his foot euen to the crowne of his head, there was no blemish in him. |
| 14:26 | And when he polled his head, (for it was at euery yeres end that he polled it: because the haire was heauy on him, therefore he polled it) hee weighed the haire of his head at two hundred shekels after the kings weight. |
| 14:27 | And vnto Absalom there were borne three sonnes, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: shee was a woman of a faire countenance. |
| 14:28 | So Absalom dwelt two full yeeres in Ierusalem, and saw not the kings face. |
| 14:29 | Therefore Absalom sent for Ioab, to haue sent him to the king, but hee would not come to him: and when hee sent againe the second time, hee would not come. |
| 14:30 | Therefore hee said vnto his seruants, See, Ioabs field is neere mine, and he hath barley there: goe, and set it on fire: and Absaloms seruants set the field on fire. |
| 14:31 | Then Ioab arose, and came to Absalom vnto his house, and said vnto him, Wherefore haue thy seruants set my field on fire? |
| 14:32 | And Absalom answered Ioab, Behold, I sent vnto thee, saying, come hither, that I may send thee to the king to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? It had bene good for mee to haue bene there still: now therefore let me see the kings face: and if there bee any iniquitie in me, let him kill me. |
| 14:33 | So Ioab came to the King, and told him: and when hee had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himselfe on his face to the ground before the king, and the King kissed Absalom. |
| 14:1 | Then Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah perceyued, that the Kings heart was toward Absalom, |
| 14:2 | And Ioab sent to Tekoah, and brought thence a subtile woman, and sayd vnto her, I pray thee, fayne thy selfe to mourne, and nowe put on mourning apparel, and anoynt not thy selfe with oyle: but be as a woman that had now long time mourned for the dead. |
| 14:3 | And come to the King, and speake on this maner vnto him, (for Ioab taught her what she should say). |
| 14:4 | Then the woman of Tekoah spake vnto the king, and fel downe on her face to the ground, and did obeysance, and sayd, Helpe, O King. |
| 14:5 | Then the King sayd vnto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am in deede a widow, and mine husband is dead: |
| 14:6 | And thine handmayd had two sonnes, and they two stroue together in the fielde: (and there was none to part them) so the one smote the other, and slew him. |
| 14:7 | And beholde, the whole familie is risen against thine handmayde, and they sayde, Deliuer him that smote his brother, that we may kill him for the soule of his brother whome hee slewe, that we may destroy the heire also: so they shall quenche my sparkle which is left, and shall not leaue to mine husband neither name nor posteritie vpon the earth. |
| 14:8 | And the King said vnto the woman, Go to thine house, and I wil giue a charge for thee. |
| 14:9 | Then the woman of Tekoah said vnto the King, My lord, O King, this trespas be on me, and on my fathers house, and the King and his throne be giltlesse. |
| 14:10 | And the King sayde, Bring him to me that speaketh against thee, and he shall touche thee no more. |
| 14:11 | Then said she, I pray thee, let the King remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer many reuengers of blood to destroy, lest they slay my sonne. And he answered, As the Lord liueth, there shall not one heare of thy sonne fall to the earth. |
| 14:12 | Then the woman said, I pray thee, let thine handmayde speake a worde to my lord the King. And he sayd, Say on. |
| 14:13 | Then the woman sayde, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? or why doeth the King, as one which is faultie, speake this thing, that he will not bring againe his banished? |
| 14:14 | For we must needes dye, and we are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered vp againe: neither doeth God spare any person, yet doeth he appoynt meanes, not to cast out from him, him that is expelled. |
| 14:15 | Nowe therefore that I am come to speake of this thing vnto my lord the King, the cause is that the people haue made me afrayd: therefore thine handmayde sayd, Nowe will I speake vnto the King: it may be that the King will perfourme the request of his handmayde. |
| 14:16 | For the King wil heare, to deliuer his handmayde out of the hande of the man that woulde destroy mee, and also my sonne from the inheritance of God. |
| 14:17 | Therefore thine handmaid sayd, The word of my lord the King shall now be comfortable: for my lorde the King is euen as an Angel of God in hearing of good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God be with thee. |
| 14:18 | Then the King answered, and said vnto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall aske thee. And the woman sayde, Let my lord the King now speake. |
| 14:19 | And the King said, Is not the hand of Ioab with thee in all this? Then the woman answered, and sayd, As thy soule liueth, my lord the King, I will not turne to the right hande nor to the left, from ought that my lorde the King hath spoken: for euen thy seruant Ioab bade mee, and he put all these wordes in the mouth of thine handmayde. |
| 14:20 | For to the intent that I should chage the forme of speach, thy seruant Ioab hath done this thing: but my lord is wise according to the wisdome of an Angel of God to vnderstande all things that are in the earth. |
| 14:21 | And the King sayde vnto Ioab, Beholde nowe, I haue done this thing: go then, and bring the yong man Absalom againe. |
| 14:22 | And Ioab fell to the grounde on his face, and bowed himselfe, and thanked the King. Then Ioab sayde, This day thy seruant knoweth, that I haue found grace in thy sight, my lord the King, in that the King hath fulfilled the request of his seruant. |
| 14:23 | And Ioab arose, and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Ierusalem. |
| 14:24 | And the King sayde, Let him turne to his owne house, and not see my face. So Absalom turned to his owne house, and saw not the Kings face. |
| 14:25 | Nowe in all Israel there was none to be so much praysed for beautie as Absalom: from the sole of his foote euen to the toppe of his head there was no blemish in him. |
| 14:26 | And when he polled his head, (for at euery yeeres ende he polled it: because it was too heauie for him, therefore he polled it) he weyghed the heare of his head at two hundreth shekels by the Kings weight. |
| 14:27 | And Absalom had three sonnes, and one daughter named Tamar, which was a fayre woman to looke vpon. |
| 14:28 | So Absalom dwelt the space of two yeres in Ierusalem, and saw not the Kings face. |
| 14:29 | Therefore Absalom sent for Ioab to sende him to the King, but he would not come to him: and when he sent againe, he would not come. |
| 14:30 | Therefore he sayde vnto his seruants, Beholde, Ioab hath a fielde by my place, and hath barley therein: go, and set it on fire: and Absaloms seruants set the field on fire. |
| 14:31 | Then Ioab arose, and came to Absalom vnto his house, and sayd vnto him, Wherefore haue thy seruants burnt my field with fire? |
| 14:32 | And Absalom answered Ioab, Beholde, I sent for thee, saying, Come thou hither, and I wil send thee to the King for to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? It had bene better for me to haue bene there still: nowe therefore let mee see the Kings face: and if there be any trespasse in me, let him kill me. |
| 14:33 | Then Ioab came to the King, and told him: and he called for Absalom, who came to the King, and bowed himselfe to the grounde on his face before the King, and the King kissed Absalom. |
| 14:1 | Ioab the sonne of Zaruia perceaued, that the kynges hert was towarde Absalom, |
| 14:2 | & he sent to Thekoa, and fett thence a wyse woman, and sayde vnto her: fayne thy selfe to be a mourner, and put on mournynge apparell. And anoynt not thy self with oyle. but be as a woman that had longe tyme mourned for some deed bodye. |
| 14:3 | And come to the kynge, and speake of thys maner vnto hym. And so Ioab taught her what she shuld saye |
| 14:4 | And when the woman of Thekoa had fallen on her face to the grounde, and done obeysaunce, she sayde vnto the kynge: helpe me O kynge. |
| 14:5 | The kynge sayde vnto her: what ayleth the? She answered: I am a wedowe, and myne husbande is deed. |
| 14:6 | And thy handmayde had two sonnes, and they two fought together in the felde, (where was no man to go betwene them) but the one smote the other and slewe hym. |
| 14:7 | And beholde, the whole kynred is rysen agaynst thy handmayde, and they sayd: delyuer vs him that smote hys brother: that we maye kyll hym for the soule of his brother whome he slue. We will destroye the heyre also. And so they shall quenche my sparkle whych is left, that he shall stere vp (to my husbande) nether name ner issue vpon the erth. |
| 14:8 | And the kynge sayde vnto the woman: go home to thyne house, I wyll geue a charge for the. |
| 14:9 | And the woman of Thekoa sayde vnto the kynge: My Lorde O kynge, thys trespace be on me and on my fathers house, and the kynge and hys seate be giltlesse. |
| 14:10 | And the kynge sayd: yf any man saye ought vnto the, bryng hym to me, and he shall hurte the no moare. |
| 14:11 | Then sayde she: lett the kynge remember hys Lorde God, that the auenger of the bloude geather not on heapes together to destroye, and that they slaye not my sonne. And he answered: as sure as the Lorde lyueth there shall not one heere of thy sonne fall to the erthe. |
| 14:12 | The woman sayde: let thyne handmayde speake one worde moare vnto my Lorde the kynge. And he sayde: saye on. |
| 14:13 | The woman sayde: wherfore then hast thou determined such a thyng agaynst the people of God? For the kyng doth speake this thynge as one which is fautye, that he shulde not fett agayne hys banesshed. |
| 14:14 | For we must nedes dye, & perysh as water spylt on the grounde, which cannot be geathered vp agayne: Neither doth God spare any soule. Let the kynge therfore fynde the meanes, that hys banysshed be not vtterly expelled from hym. |
| 14:15 | Nowe therfore am I come, to speake of this thing vnto the kynge my Lorde: For they that be of the people, haue feared me. And thy handmayde sayde: Nowe wyll I speake vnto the kyng, parauenture the kynge will perfourme the request of his handmayde. |
| 14:16 | And the kinge shall heare his handmayde, to delyuer her out of the hande of the man that wolde haue destroyed me and also my sonne out of the enheritaunce of God. |
| 14:17 | And thyne handmayde sayde: the worde of my Lorde the kynge shall nowe be confortable? For my Lorde the kynge is as an Angel of God, in hearyng of good and badd: therfore the Lorde thy God be with the. |
| 14:18 | Then the kynge answered, & sayde vnto the woman: hyde not from me (I praye the) the thynge that I shall aske the: And the woman sayde: let my Lorde the kyng nowe saye on. |
| 14:19 | And the kynge sayde: Is not the hande of Ioab wyth the in all this matter? The woman answered, and sayde: as sure as thy soule lyueth my Lorde kynge, there is els no man (on the ryght hande nor on the leaft) but as my Lorde the kynge hath spoken, thy seruaunt Ioab he bad me, and he put all these wordes in the mouthe of thyne handmayde. |
| 14:20 | For to the intent that I shulde alter my communicacyon, hath thy seruaunt Ioab done this thinge. And my Lord is wise, euen as an Angell of God, to vnderstand all thynges that are in the erthe. |
| 14:21 | And the kynge sayde vnto Ioab beholde, I am content to do this thing. Go, and fett home the chylde Absalom agayne. |
| 14:22 | And Ioab fell to the grounde on his face, and bowed hym selfe, & blessed the kynge And Ioab sayde: nowe thy seruaunt knoweth, that I haue founde grace in thy syght (my Lorde O kynge) in that the kynge hath fulfylled the request of hys seruaunt. |
| 14:23 | And so Ioab arose, and went to Gesur, and brought Absalom to Ierusalem. |
| 14:24 | And the kyng sayd: let him turne to hys awne house, and not se my face. And so Absalom returned to hys awne house, and sawe not the kynges face. |
| 14:25 | But in all Israel there was not so goodlye a man as Absalom, for he was very bewtifull: in so moche that from the sole of his fote to the toppe of his heed, there was no blemeshe in him. |
| 14:26 | And when he shaued hys heed (for at euery yeares end he shaued it, because the heer was heute on hym and must nedes shaue it) the heere of his heed wayed two hundred cycles after the kynges weyght. |
| 14:27 | And this Absalom had thre sonnes borne him and one daughter, named Thamar, whyche was afayre, woman to loke vpon. |
| 14:28 | So Absalom dwelt two yere in Ierusalem, & sawe not the kynges face. |
| 14:29 | Therfore Absalom sent for Ioab, to haue sent hym to the kinge. But he wolde not come to him. And whan he sent agayne, he wolde not come. |
| 14:30 | Therfore he sayde vnto hys seruauntes: beholde, Ioab hath a parcell of lande fast by my place, and he hath barlye therin. Go, and set it on fire. And Absaloms seruauntes sett it on fyre. |
| 14:31 | Then Ioab arose & came to Absalom vnto his house, & sayde vnto him: wherfore haue thy seruauntes burnt my felde wyth fyre. |
| 14:32 | And Absalom answered Ioab: beholde, I sent for the, desyringe the to come, because I wolde haue sent the to the kinge, for to saye: wherfore am I come from Gesur. It had bene better for me, to haue bene there styll. Nowe therfore, wolde I se the kynges face. And yf there be any trespace in me, kyll thou me. |
| 14:33 | And so Ioab came to the kynge, & tolde him: whych whan he had sent for Absalom, he came to the kynge, and fell to the grounde on hys face before hym. And the kynge kyssed Absalom. |
