Job - Chapter: 31

>
31:1I Made a couenaunt wt myne eyes that I wolde not loke vpon a damsell.
31:2For how great a porcion shall I haue of God? & what enheritaunce from the almightie on hie?
31:3As for the vngodly and he that ioyneth him selfe to the company of wycked doers, shall not destruccion and misery come vpon him?
31:4Doth not he se my wayes, and tell all my goinges?
31:5If I haue walked in vanite, or yf my fete haue runne to disceaue:
31:6let me be weyed in an euen balaunce, that God may se my innocency.
31:7If so be that I haue withdrawne my fote out of the right waye, and yf my hert hath folowed mine eye sight? If I haue stained or defiled my handes?
31:8then shal I sowe, and another eate, yee, my generacion and posterite shall be cleane roted out.
31:9If my hert hath lusted after my neghboures wyffe, or yf I haue layde wayte at his dore?
31:10O then let my wiffe grinde vnto another man and let other men lie with her.
31:11For this is a wickednesse and synne, that is worthy to be punisshed,
31:12yee, a fyre that vtterly shulde consume, and rote out all my substaunce.
31:13Did I euer thinke scorne to do right vnto my seruauntes and maydens, when they had eny mater agaynst me?
31:14But seinge that God will sytt in iudgment, what shall I do? And for so moch as he will nedes visett me, what answere shall I geue him?
31:15He that fashioned me in my mothers wombe, made he not him also? were we not both shapena like in oure mothers bodies?
31:16When the poore desired any thinge at me, haue I denied it them? Haue I caused the widdowe to stande waytinge for me in vayne?
31:17Haue I eaten my porcion alone, that the fatherlesse hath had no parte with me?
31:18for mercy grewe vp with me fro my youth, and compassion fro my mothers wombe.
31:19Haue I sene any man perishe thorow nakednesse and want of clothinge? Or any poore man for lack of rayment,
31:20whose sydes thancked me not, because he was warmed with the wolle of my shepe?
31:21Dyd I euer lyfte vp my hande to hurte the fatherlesse? yee, in the gate where I sawe my selfe to be in auctorite:
31:22then let myne arme fall fro my shulder, and myne arme holes be broken from the ioyntes.
31:23For I haue euer feared the vengeaunce and punyshement of God, and knewe very well, that I was not able to beare hys burthen.
31:24Haue I put my trust in golde? Or haue I sayde to the fynest golde of all: thou arte my confidence?
31:25Haue I reioysed because my power was great, and because my hande gat so moche?
31:26Dyd I euer greatly regarde the rysynge of the sonne? or had I the goinge downe of the moone in greate reputacyon?
31:27Hath my hert medled priuely with any disceate? Or, dyd I euer kysse myne awne hande?
31:28that were a wyckednesse worthy to be punished, for then shulde I haue denyed the God that is aboue.
31:29Haue I euer reioysed at the hurte of myne enemy? Or was I euer glad, that any harme happened vnto him? Oh no.
31:30I neuer suffred my mouth to do soch a synne, as to wish him euell.
31:31Dyd not the men of myne awne houshold saye: who shall let vs to haue oure belly full of his fleshe?
31:32I haue not suffred a straunger to lye without, but I opened my dores vnto him, that went by the waye.
31:33Haue I kepte secrete my synne and hyd myne iniquite, as Adam dyd?
31:34Haue I feared any great multitude of people: or yf I had bene dispysed of the symple, O then shulde I haue bene afrayed. Thus haue I quyetly spent my lyfe, and not gone out at the dore.
31:35O that I had one which wolde heare me. Lo, this is my cause. In the which the almyghty shall answere for me: though he that is my contrary party, hath written a boke agaynst me.
31:36Yet wyll I take him vpon my shulder, and as a garlande about my head.
31:37I wyll tell him, the nomber of my goinges, and go vnto him as to a Prince.
31:38But yf case be that my lande crye agaynst me, or that the forowes therof make any complaynte:
31:39yf I haue eaten the frutes therof vnpayed for, yee yf I haue greued any of the plowmen:
31:40then let thystles growe in steade of my wheate, & cockle for my barleye. Here ende the wordes of Iob:

31:1I made couenaunt with myn iyen, that Y schulde not thenke of a virgyn.
31:2For what part schulde God aboue haue in me, and eritage Almyyti God of hiye thingis?
31:3Whether perdicioun is not to a wickid man, and alienacioun of God is to men worchynge wickidnesse?
31:4Whether he biholdith not my weies, and noumbrith alle my goyngis?
31:5If Y yede in vanyte, and my foot hastide in gile,
31:6God weie me in a iust balaunce, and knowe my symplenesse.
31:7If my step bowide fro the weie; if myn iye suede myn herte, and a spotte cleuede to myn hondis;
31:8sowe Y, and another ete, and my generacioun be drawun out bi the root.
31:9If myn herte was disseyued on a womman, and if Y settide aspies at the dore of my frend; my wijf be the hoore of anothir man,
31:10and othir men be bowid doun on hir.
31:11For this is vnleueful, and the moost wickidnesse.
31:12Fier is deourynge `til to wastyng, and drawynge vp bi the roote alle generaciouns.
31:13If Y dispiside to take doom with my seruaunt and myn hand mayde, whanne thei stryueden ayens me.
31:14What sotheli schal Y do, whanne God schal rise to deme? and whanne he schal axe, what schal Y answere to hym?
31:15Whether he, that wrouyte also hym, made not me in the wombe, and o God formede me in the wombe?
31:16If Y denyede to pore men that, that thei wolden, and if Y made the iyen of a wydewe to abide;
31:17if Y aloone eet my mussel, and a faderles child eet not therof;
31:18for merciful doyng encreesside with me fro my yong childhed, and yede out of my modris wombe with me;
31:19if Y dispiside a man passynge forth, for he hadde not a cloth, and a pore man with out hilyng;
31:20if hise sidis blessiden not me, and was not maad hoot of the fleeces of my scheep;
31:21if Y reiside myn hond on a fadirles child, yhe, whanne Y siy me the hiyere in the yate;
31:22my schuldre falle fro his ioynt, and myn arm with hise boonys be al to-brokun.
31:23For euere Y dredde God, as wawis wexynge gret on me; and `Y myyte not bere his birthun.
31:24If Y gesside gold my strengthe, and if Y seide to purid gold, Thou art my trist;
31:25if Y was glad on my many ritchessis, and for myn hond foond ful many thingis;
31:26if Y siy the sunne, whanne it schynede, and the moone goynge clereli;
31:27and if myn herte was glad in priuyte, and if Y kisside myn hond with my mouth;
31:28which is the moost wickidnesse, and deniyng ayens hiyeste God;
31:29if Y hadde ioye at the fallyng of hym, that hatide me, and if Y ioide fulli, that yuel hadde founde hym;
31:30for Y yaf not my throte to do synne, that Y schulde asaile and curse his soule;
31:31if the men of my tabernacle seiden not, Who yyueth, that we be fillid of hise fleischis? a pilgryme dwellide not with outforth;
31:32my dore was opyn to a weiegoere;
31:33if Y as man hidde my synne, and helide my wickidnesse in my bosum;
31:34if Y dredde at ful greet multitude, and if dispisyng of neyyboris made me aferd; and not more Y was stille, and yede not out of the dore;
31:35who yyueth an helpere to me, that Almyyti God here my desire? that he that demeth,
31:36write a book, that Y bere it in my schuldre, and cumpasse it as a coroun to me?
31:37Bi alle my degrees Y schal pronounce it, and Y schal as offre it to the prynce.
31:38If my lond crieth ayens me, and hise forewis wepen with it;
31:39if Y eet fruytis therof with out money, and Y turmentide the soule of erthetileris of it;
31:40a brere growe to me for wheete, and a thorn for barli.

31:1I made a couenaunt wt myne eyes, yt I wolde not loke vpo a dasell.
31:2For how greate a porcio shal I haue of God fro aboue? & what enheritauce fro ye Almightie on hie?
31:3As for the vngodly & he yt ioyneth himself to ye copani of wicked doers shal not destruccion & misery came vpon him?
31:4Doth not he se my wayes, & tell all my goinges?
31:5Yf I haue cleued vnto vanite, or yf my fete haue runne to disceaue:
31:6let me be weyed in an eauen balaunce, that God maye se my innocency.
31:7Yf so be that I haue withdrawen my fote out of the right waye, yf my hert hath folowed myne eyesight, yf I haue stayned or defyled my hodes:
31:8O then is it reason that I sowe, and another eate: yee that my generacion and posterite be clene roted out.
31:9Yf my hert hath lusted after my neghbours wife, or yf I haue layed wayte at his dore:
31:10O then let my wife be another mans harlot, and let other lye with her.
31:11For this is a wickednesse and synne, that is worthy to be punyshed,
31:12yee a fyre that vtterly shulde consume, & rote out all my substaunce.
31:13Dyd I euer thynke scorne to do right vnto my seruautes and maydens, when they had eny matter agaynst me?
31:14But seynge that God wil sytt in iudgment, what shal I do? And for so moch as he wil nedes vyset me, what answere shal I geue him?
31:15He that fashioned me in my mothers wombe, made he not him also? were we not both shappen alyke in oure mothers bodies?
31:16When the poore desyred enythinge at me, haue I denyed it them? Haue I caused ye wyddowe stonde waytinge for me in vayne?
31:17Haue I eaten my porcion alone, that the fatherles hath had no parte with me?
31:18(for mercy grewe vp with me fro my youth, & compassion fro my mothers wombe.)
31:19Haue I sene eny man perish thorow nakednes & want of clothinge? Or, eny poore man for lack of rayment,
31:20whose sydes thanked me not, because he was warmed wt ye woll of my shepe?
31:21Dyd I euer lyft vp my honde to hurte the fatherlesse? Yee in the gate where I sawe my self to be in auctorite:
31:22The let myne arme fall fro my shulder, & myne arme holes be broken from the ioyntes.
31:23For I haue euer feared ye vengeaunce & punyshmet of God, & knew very well, yt I was not able to beare his burthe.
31:24Haue I put my trust in golde? Or, haue I sayde to the fynest golde of all: thou art my cofidence?
31:25Haue I reioysed because my substaunce was greate, and because my honde gat so moch?
31:26Dyd I euer greatly regarde the rysinge of the Sonne? Or, had I the goinge downe of ye Moone in greate reputacion?
31:27Hath my hert medled priuely wt eny disceate? Or, dyd I euer kysse myne owne honde
31:28(that were a wickednesse worthy to be punyshed, for then shulde I haue denyed the God that is aboue.)
31:29Haue I euer reioysed at the hurte of myne enemy? Or, was I euer glad, yt eny harme happened vnto him? Oh no,
31:30I neuer suffred my mouth to do soch a sinne, as to wysh him euell.
31:31Yet they of myne owne housholde saye: who shal let vs, to haue oure bely ful of his flesh?
31:32I haue not suffred a straunger to lye wt out, but opened my dores vnto him.
31:33Haue I euer done eny wicked dede where thorow I shamed my self before men: Or eny abhominacion, yt I was fayne to hyde it?
31:34For yf I had feared eny greate multitude of people: Or yf I had bene dispysed of ye symple, Oh then shulde I haue bene afrayed. Thus haue I quyetly spent my lyfe, and not gone out at ye dore.
31:35O that I had one which wolde heare me. Lo, this is my cause. Let ye Allmightie geue me answere: & let him that is my cotrary party, sue me with a lybell.
31:36Then shall I take it vpon my shulder, & as a garlade aboute my heade.
31:37I haue tolde the nombre of my goinges, and delyuered them vnto him as to a prynce.
31:38But yf case be that my londe crie agaynst me, or yt the forowes therof make eny complaynte:
31:39yf I haue eaten the frutes therof vnpayed for, yee yf I haue greued eny of the plow men:
31:40Than, let thistles growe in steade of my wheate, & thornes for my barlye.Here ende the wordes of Iob.
