| 23:2 | and seide, On the chayere of Moises, scribis and Farisees han sete. |
| 23:3 | Therfor kepe ye, and do ye alle thingis, what euer thingis thei seien to you. But nyle ye do aftir her werkis; for thei seien, and don not. |
| 23:4 | And thei bynden greuouse chargis, and that moun not be borun, and putten on schuldris of men; but with her fyngur thei wolen not moue hem. |
| 23:5 | Therfor thei don alle her werkis `that thei be seen of men; for thei drawen abrood her filateries, and magnifien hemmes. |
| 23:6 | And thei louen the first sittyng placis in soperis, and the first chaieris in synagogis; |
| 23:7 | and salutaciouns in chepyng, and to be clepid of men maystir. |
| 23:8 | But nyle ye be clepid maister; for oon is youre maystir, and alle ye ben britheren. |
| 23:9 | And nyle ye clepe to you a fadir on erthe, for oon is your fadir, that is in heuenes. |
| 23:10 | Nether be ye clepid maistris, for oon is youre maister, Crist. |
| 23:11 | He that is grettest among you, schal be youre mynystre. |
| 23:12 | For he that hieth himself, schal be mekid; and he that mekith hym silf, schal be enhaunsid. |
| 23:13 | But wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that closen the kyngdom of heuenes bifore men; and ye entren not, nether suffren men entrynge to entre. |
| 23:14 | Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that eten the housis of widowis, and preien bi longe preier; for this thing ye schulen take more doom. |
| 23:15 | Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ypocritis, that goon aboute the see and the loond, to make o prosilite; and whanne he is maad, ye maken hym a sone of helle, double more than ye ben. |
| 23:16 | Wo to you, blynde lederis, that seien, Who euer swerith bi the temple of God, it is `no thing; but he that swerith in the gold of the temple, is dettoure. |
| 23:17 | Ye foolis and blynde, for what is grettere, the gold, or the temple that halewith the gold? |
| 23:18 | And who euer swerith in the auter, it is no thing; but he that swerith in the yifte that is on the auter, owith. |
| 23:19 | Blynde men, for what is more, the yifte, or the auter that halewith the yifte? |
| 23:20 | Therfor he that swerith in the auter, swerith in it, and in alle thingis that ben ther on. |
| 23:21 | And he that swerith in the temple, swerith in it, and in hym that dwellith in the temple. |
| 23:22 | And he that swerith in heuene, swerith in the trone of God, and in hym that sittith ther on. |
| 23:23 | Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ypocritis, that tithen mynte, anete, and cummyn, and han left tho thingis that ben of more charge of the lawe, doom, and merci, and feith. And it bihofte to do these thingis, and not to leeue tho. |
| 23:24 | Blynde lederis, clensinge a gnatte, but swolewynge a camel. |
| 23:25 | Woo to you, scribis and Farisees, ypocritis, that clensen the cuppe and the plater with outforth; but with ynne ye ben ful of raueyne and vnclennesse. |
| 23:26 | Thou blynde Farisee, clense the cuppe and the plater with ynneforth, that that that is with outforth be maad clene. |
| 23:27 | Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that ben lijk to sepulcris whitid, whiche with outforth semen faire to men; but with ynne thei ben fulle of boonus of deed men, and of al filthe. |
| 23:28 | So ye with outforth semen iust to men; but with ynne ye ben ful of ypocrisy and wickidnesse. |
| 23:29 | Wo to you, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that bilden sepulcris of profetis, and maken faire the birielis of iust men, |
| 23:30 | and seien, If we hadden be in the daies of oure fadris, we schulden not haue be her felowis in the blood of prophetis. |
| 23:31 | And so ye ben in witnessyng to you silf, that ye ben the sones of hem that slowen the prophetis. |
| 23:32 | And fulfille ye the mesure of youre fadris. |
| 23:33 | Ye eddris, and eddris briddis, hou schulen ye fle fro the doom of helle? |
| 23:34 | Therfor lo! Y sende to you profetis, and wise men, and scribis; and of hem ye schulen sle and crucifie, and of hem ye schulen scourge in youre sinagogis, and schulen pursue fro cite in to citee; |
| 23:35 | that al the iust blood come on you, that was sched on the erthe, fro the blood of iust Abel to the blood of Zacarie, the sone of Barachie, whom ye slowen bitwixe the temple and the auter. |
| 23:36 | Treuli Y seie to you, alle these thingis schulen come on this generacioun. |
| 23:37 | Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that sleest prophetis, and stoonest hem that ben sent to thee, hou ofte wolde Y gadere togidere thi children, as an henne gaderith togidir her chikenes vndir hir wengis, and thou woldist not. |
| 23:38 | Lo! youre hous schal be left to you desert. |
| 23:39 | And Y seie to you, ye schulen not se me fro hennus forth, til ye seien, Blessid is he, that cometh in the name of the Lord. |

| 23:2 | sayinge. The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses seate. |
| 23:3 | All therfore whatsoever they byd you observe that observe and do: but after their workes do not: |
| 23:4 | For they saye and do not. Ye and they bynde hevy burthes and grevous to be borne and ley the on menes shulders: but they themsylfes will not heave at them with one of their fyngers. |
| 23:5 | All their workes they do for to be sene of me. They set abroade their philateries and make large borders on there garmetes |
| 23:6 | and love to sit vppermooste at feastes and to have the chefe seates in the synagoges |
| 23:7 | and gretinges in the marketes and to be called of men Rabi. |
| 23:8 | But ye shall not suffre youre selves to be called Rabi. For one is youre master that is to wyt Christ and all ye are brethre. |
| 23:9 | And call no man youre father vpon the erth for there is but one youre father and he is in heven. |
| 23:10 | Be not called masters for there is but one youre master and he is Christ. |
| 23:11 | He that is greatest amoge you shalbe youre seruaunte. |
| 23:12 | But whosoever exalteth himsilfe shalbe brought lowe. And he yt hubleth himsilfe shalbe exalted. |
| 23:13 | Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites for ye shutte vp the kyngdome of heve before men: ye youre selves goo not in nether suffre ye them that come to enter in. |
| 23:14 | Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites: ye devoure widdowes houses and that vnder a coloure of praying longe prayers: wherfore ye shall receave greater damnacion. |
| 23:15 | Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites which compasse see and londe to bringe one in to youre belefe: and when he ys brought ye make him two folde more the chylde of hell then ye youre selves are. |
| 23:16 | Wo be vnto you blynd gides which saye whosoever sweare by the teple it is no thinge: but whosoever sweare by the golde of the temple he offendeth. |
| 23:17 | Ye foles and blinde? whether is greater the golde or the teple that sanctifieth ye golde. |
| 23:18 | And whosoever sweareth by the aulter it is nothinge: but whosoever sweareth by ye offeringe yt lyeth on ye aultre offendeth. |
| 23:19 | Ye foles and blinde: whether is greater ye offeringe or ye aultre which sanctifieth ye offeringe? |
| 23:20 | Whosoever therfore sweareth by ye aultre sweareth by it and by all yt there on is. |
| 23:21 | And whosoever sweareth by the teple sweareth by it and by hym yt dwelleth therin. |
| 23:22 | And he that sweareth by heve swereth by the seate of God and by hym that sytteth theron. |
| 23:23 | Wo be to you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites which tythe mynt annyse and comen and leave the waygthtyer mattres of ye lawe vndone: iudgemet mercy and fayth. These ought ye to have done and not to have left the othre vndone. |
| 23:24 | Ye blinde gydes which strayne out a gnat and swalowe a cammyll. |
| 23:25 | Wo be to you scribes and pharises ypocrites which make clene ye vtter syde of the cuppe and of the platter: but within they are full of brybery and excesse. |
| 23:26 | Thou blinde Pharise clense fyrst the outsyde of the cup and platter that the ynneside of them maye be clene also. |
| 23:27 | Wo be to you Scribe and Pharises ypocrite for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes which appere beautyfull outwarde: but are wt in full of deed bones and of all fylthynes. |
| 23:28 | So are ye for outwarde ye appere righteous vnto me when within ye are full of ypocrisie and iniquite. |
| 23:29 | Wo be vnto you Scribes and Pharises ypocrites: ye bylde the tombes of the Prophetes and garnisshe the sepulchres of the righteous |
| 23:30 | and saye: Yf we had bene in the dayes of oure fathers we wolde not have bene parteners with them in the bloud of the Prophetes. |
| 23:31 | So then ye be witnesses vnto youre selfes that ye are the chyldren of them which killed the prophetes. |
| 23:32 | Fulfill ye lyke wyse the measure of youre fathers. |
| 23:33 | Yee serpentes and generacion of vipers how shuld ye scape ye dapnacio of hell? |
| 23:34 | Wherfore beholde I sende vnto you prophetes wyse men and scribes and of the ye shall kyll and crucifie: and of the ye shall scourge in youre synagoges and persecute from cyte to cyte |
| 23:35 | that vpon you maye come all the righteous bloude that was sheed vpon the erth fro the bloud of righteous Abell vnto ye bloud of zacharias the sonne of Barachias who ye slewe betwene the teple and ye altre. |
| 23:36 | Verely I say vnto you all these thinges shall light vpon this generacion. |
| 23:37 | Hierusalem hierusalem which kyllest prophetes and stonest the which are sent to the: how often wolde I have gadered thy chyldren to gether as the henne gadreth her chickes vnder her winges but ye wolde not: |
| 23:38 | Beholde youre habitacio shalbe lefte vnto you desolate. |
| 23:39 | For I saye to you ye shall not se me heceforthe tyll that ye saye: blessed is he that cometh in the name of ye Lorde. |

| 23:3 | Therfore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and do, but after their workes shal ye not do, |

| 23:14 | Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, that deuoure wyddowes houses, and that vnder the culoure of prayenge longe prayers, therfore shal ye receaue ye greater damnacion. |
| 23:15 | Wo vnto you Scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, which compasse see and lode to make one Proselyte: and whan he is become one, ye make of him a childe of hell, two folde more then ye youre selues are. |
| 23:16 | Wo vnto you blyndegydes, which saye: Who so euer sweareth by the temple, that is nothinge: but who so euer sweareth by the golde of the temple, he is giltie. |
| 23:17 | Ye fooles and blynde, whether is greater? the golde, or the teple that sanctifieth the golde? |
| 23:18 | And who so euer sweareth by the altare, that is nothinge: but who so euer sweareth by the offeringe that is vpo it, he is giltye. |
| 23:19 | Ye fooles and blynde, whether is greater? the offeringe, or the altare that sanctifieth the offerynge? |
| 23:20 | Therfore who so sweareth by the altare, sweareth by the same, and by all that is theron: |
| 23:21 | and who so sweareth by the temple, sweareth by the same, and by him that dwelleth therin. |
| 23:22 | And who so sweareth by heauen, sweareth by the seate of God, and by him that sytteth theron. |
| 23:23 | Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrytes, which tythe Mynt, Anyse and Commyn, and leaue the waightier matters of the lawe behynde: namely, iudgment, mercy, and fayth. These ought to haue bene done, and not to leaue the other behynde. |
| 23:24 | O ye blynde gydes, which strayne out a gnat, but swalowe vp a Camell. |
| 23:25 | Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye Ypocrytes, which make cleane the vttersyde of the cuppe and platter, but within are ye full of robbery and excesse. |
| 23:26 | Thou blynde Pharise, clense first the in syde of the cuppe and platter, that the out syde maye be cleane also. |
| 23:27 | Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye Ypocrites, which be like vnto paynted Sepulcres, that appeare beutyfull outwarde, but within they are full of deed mens bones and all fylthines. |
| 23:28 | Euen so are ye also: Outwarde ye appeare righteous vnto men, but within ye are full of ypocrisye and iniquyte. |
| 23:29 | Wo vnto you scrybes and Pharises, ye ypocrites, which buylde the tombes of the prophetes, and garnysh the sepulcres of the righteous, |
