Matthew - Chapter: 23

>
23:1Then Jesus spake to the multitudes, and to his disciples,
23:2saying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;
23:3all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;
23:4for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.
23:5`And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,
23:6they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
23:7and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8`And ye -- ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director -- the Christ, and all ye are brethren;
23:9and ye may not call `any' your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,
23:10nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director -- the Christ.
23:11And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,
23:12and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.
23:13`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.
23:14`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.
23:15`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.
23:16`Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary -- is debtor!
23:17Fools and blind! for which `is' greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?
23:18`And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it -- is debtor!
23:19Fools and blind! for which `is' greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?
23:20`He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;
23:21and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;
23:22and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.
23:23`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law -- the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved `you' to do, and those not to neglect.
23:24`Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.
23:25`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.
23:26`Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.
23:27`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;
23:28so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
23:29`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,
23:30and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
23:31So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;
23:32and ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.
23:33`Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?
23:34`Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;
23:35that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:
23:36verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.
23:37`Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.
23:38Lo, left desolate to you is your house;
23:39for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed `is' he who is coming in the name of the Lord.'

23:1Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
23:2Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
23:3All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
23:4For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
23:5But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
23:6And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
23:7And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
23:9And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
23:10Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
23:11But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
23:12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
23:13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
23:14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
23:15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
23:16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
23:17Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
23:18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
23:19Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
23:20Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
23:21And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
23:22And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
23:24Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
23:25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
23:26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
23:27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
23:28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
23:29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
23:30And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
23:31Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
23:32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
23:33Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
23:34Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
23:35That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
23:36Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
23:37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
23:38Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
23:39For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

23:1Then Jesus spoke to the crowd and to His disciples,
23:2saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sat down on Moses' seat.
23:3Then all things, whatever they tell you to keep, keep and do. But do not do according to their works, for they say, and do not do.
23:4For they bind heavy and hard to bear burdens, and lay them on the shoulders of men, but they do not desire to move them with their finger.
23:5And they do all their works to be seen by men. And they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their robes.
23:6And they love the first couch in the suppers, and the first seats in the synagogues,
23:7and the greetings in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8But do not you be called Rabbi, for One is your Leader, the Christ, and you are all brothers.
23:9And call no one your father on earth, for One is your Father, the One in Heaven.
23:10Nor be called leaders, for One is your Leader, the Christ.
23:11But the greater of you shall be your servant.
23:12And whoever will exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever will humble himself shall be exalted.
23:13But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of Heaven before men; for you do not enter, nor do you allow those entering to go in.
23:14Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour the houses of widows, and pray at length as a pretext. Because of this you will receive more abundant judgment.
23:15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you go about the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte; and when he has become so, you make him twofold more a son of Hell than yourselves.
23:16Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whoever swears by the Holy Place, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the Holy Place is a debtor.
23:17Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold, or the Holy Place that sanctifies the gold?
23:18And you say , Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift on it, he is a debtor.
23:19Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
23:20Then the one swearing by the altar swears by it, and by all things on it.
23:21And the one swearing by the Holy Place swears by it, and by the One dwelling in it.
23:22And the one swearing by Heaven swears by the throne of God, and by the One sitting on it.
23:23Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and you have left aside the weightier matters of the Law: judgment, and mercy, and faith. It was right to do these, and not to have left those aside.
23:24Blind guides, straining out the gnat, but swallowing the camel!
23:25Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of robbery and excess.
23:26Blind Pharisee! First cleanse the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside of them may become clean also.
23:27Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened graves which outwardly indeed appear beautiful, but within are full of bones of the dead, and of all uncleanness.
23:28So you also indeed outwardly appear righteous to men, but within are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
23:29Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous.
23:30And you say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
23:31So you witness to yourselves that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets.
23:32And you fill up the measure of your fathers.
23:33Serpents! Offspring of vipers! How shall you escape the judgment of Hell?
23:34Because of this, behold, I send to you prophets and wise ones and scribes. And some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and will persecute from city to city;
23:35so that should come on you all the righteous blood poured out on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Berechiah whom you murdered between the Holy Place and the altar.
23:36Truly I say to you, All these things will come on this generation.
23:37Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning those sent to her. How often I desired to gather your children in the way a bird gathers her chicks under her wings! And you did not desire it.
23:38Behold, "your house is left to you desolate." Jer. 22:5
23:39For I say to you, In no way shall you see Me from now on, until you say, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord." Psa. 118:26
